I want to send a huge thank you to my good friend McCayleigh Daniels for giving me the incredible opportunity to be the first to review Isle of Beasts and Shadows. It was such an honor to dive into this beautiful world and share my thoughts. Your trust means the world to me, and I’m so grateful to have experienced this story firsthand! Love ya sm friend!!💖✨

An epic journey into a world of magic and mystery!

Isle of Beasts and Shadows by McCayleigh Daniels is a breathtaking fantasy that left me utterly spellbound from start to finish! The rich, atmospheric world-building drew me in instantly, filled with dangerous creatures, ancient secrets, and a beautifully crafted island setting that felt alive with magic.

The characters are deeply layered, each with their own complex motivations and growth. The protagonist, Airella, had a journey that was both thrilling and emotionally resonant. The dynamic between the characters, especially the subtle alliances and betrayals, kept me on the edge of my seat.

This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. I laughed, I gasped, and yes, I even cried. The story tugged at my heartstrings in so many ways, making me feel everything from intense excitement to deep sorrow. It’s one of those books that sticks with you long after you’ve turned the last page because of how profoundly it pulls you into the characters struggles and triumphs.

Daniels’ writing is vivid and captivating, painting a world that is as dark as it is enchanting. The pacing is perfect, with enough action to keep the pages turning, but also quieter moments that allow for introspection and character development. I found myself completely invested in the fates of the characters, particularly the way the lore of the island is gradually revealed, adding layers of intrigue.

This book is perfect for readers who love epic fantasy with a touch of the dark and mysterious. Isle of Beasts and Shadows is a masterclass in storytelling, and I cannot wait to see where this series goes next!

This one pulled me in pretty quickly. The tone had a nice mix of intrigue and tension, with enough mystery around the island and its history to keep me leaning in. It gave the feeling that something dangerous was always lurking just beyond the next page, and I was here for it.

Airella is a solid lead. She is capable, guarded, and driven by more than just survival. While I would have loved a deeper look into her thoughts and motivations, she still held her ground in a complex world. Sirius though? He stole the spotlight. Quiet, sharp, and layered in all the right ways. I constantly wanted more of him on the page. Their dynamic had a slow burn that felt earned.

The story moves well. Each scene felt purposeful and the transitions were smooth. The book had a natural rhythm that kept things from dragging but still gave space for the world and characters to develop.

The world-building was the standout for me. The world felt big, lived in, and full of hidden corners. There was a real sense of history behind the events and locations, and it never felt like the author was just building for the sake of it. Everything served a purpose, and it made the story feel rooted.

This is a strong fantasy with a compelling slow burn and a sense of tension that simmers all the way through. It’s full of atmosphere, secrets, and characters who feel like they have more to say. I enjoyed the ride and will definitely be keeping an eye on what comes next.

"A Captivating Story with Rich Characters and Thrilling Action"

I thoroughly enjoyed this story from start to finish. The author has a remarkable ability to craft characters with depth and complexity, making them feel real and relatable. Sirius and Airella, in particular, stood out to me as strong, well-developed characters whose bond was both compelling and authentic. I appreciated how the author didn’t shy away from showing both their strengths and flaws, which added layers to their relationship and made their interactions feel genuine.

The storytelling itself was equally captivating. The action-packed scenes kept me on the edge of my seat, I found myself eager to see what would happen next. The balance between intense action and quieter, more emotional moments helped give the story a dynamic feel that kept me hooked throughout.

From the very first page, I was drawn into this world, and by the end, I was left wanting more. Sirius and Airella’s journey is far from over, and I’m eagerly anticipating the next chapter in their story. If you’re looking for a book with well-developed characters, thrilling action, and a gripping plot, this one is definitely worth picking up. I can’t wait for the sequel!

“Isle of Beasts and Shadows” by McCayleigh Daniels is a spellbinding blend of dark fantasy and intrigue that transports readers to an eerie island where danger lurks in every shadow. The novel’s atmospheric setting immediately draws you in, with descriptions of the misty island and its unpredictable wildlife, both natural and supernatural. Daniels masterfully weaves together the island’s mysteries with a cast of richly developed characters, each with their own secrets and desires. This book has a great balance between fast-paced action and thoughtful exploration of themes like survival, loyalty, and the cost of power. McCayleigh's writing is immersive, keeping you on the edge of your seat as the plot twists and unfolds in unexpected ways. The beasts that roam the island are not just physical threats but symbolic representations of the darker aspects of human nature, adding layers to the story. I loved this book and can't wait for more!

Loved Sirius and Airella’s relationship! There were so many turns in the story and hopefully with book 2 we get to really see how Emmaline works into the main plot. Even though I did find some parts of the story slow, I liked the overall plot and the writing was great. Did not see the plot twist “Father” brought so it was nice to be a little surprised!

In my opinion this was one of those books you can't put down. I loved the plot and all, but most of all I loved the connection Airella and Alikad (Sirius) share. I cannot wait for the second book in the series. The author McCayleigh Daniels has my full support from now. Wish you all the best. :).

Fantasy? Action packed? Slow burn romance?? Say less.

I couldn’t put this book down!! Seriously, I’d be driving in traffic and reading it. I was on the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed the characters development throughout the story, each one felt layered and intentional. I related to Airella so much throughout her journey. I kept finding myself saying “me too girl”. Daniel’s does such an amazing job keeping you hooked right from the beginning.

Going to be honest, I had high hopes for this one but almost did not finish multiple times….only reason I did was I would feel bad for not seeing it through. I liked the plot, story & characters but it was very predictable….also the writing jumped around a lot and I was very confused multiple times…not for me & wont be reading the next one…sorry I tried :(

I could not follow this book very well. It was a very confusing book. It didn't feel well rounded. There were so many characters and some died and came back and it just felt like too much going on. I read this in hopes that reading the prequel would make more sense and I feel honestly more confused. The concept was intriguing but the execution left a lot to be desired.

I think the premise/plot of the story is solid. Unfortunately, I think the author's beta readers, editor, and publisher did her super dirty. I did not finish this book - it's a solid first draft, but it needs a lot of polish.

Isle of Beasts and Shadows by McCayleigh Daniels is a thrilling romantasy that blends high-stakes adventure, forbidden love, and a battle between light and shadow with compelling emotional depth. From its very first chapter, the story throws you into a dangerous, creature-infested island and never lets you catch your breath for long.

Airella Devereaux is a bold and determined heroine, raised in the shadow of a legendary war general and now thrust into her own legacy. Her strength isn't just physical—though there’s plenty of sword-swinging action—it’s also emotional. Daniels crafts a protagonist who is vulnerable without being weak, duty-driven yet undeniably human, and watching her unravel the truth of her lineage adds meaningful stakes to the action-packed plot.

The highlight of the story, however, is the electric tension between Airella and Sirius, a brooding reaper who is equal parts dangerous and captivating. Their connection feels urgent and forbidden in the best way, with sparks flying even as the threat of betrayal lingers. It’s not just romantic tension—it’s ideological conflict, duty vs. desire, and a looming darkness that neither fully understands. Their relationship evolves gradually and believably, adding just the right amount of heat to balance the plot’s darker themes.

The mysterious island setting is lush and atmospheric, teeming with danger and Miscreants—creatures that evoke both horror and wonder. Daniels shines in worldbuilding, especially as the scope expands from the island to the kingdom of Eldaraya and the dark, creeping influence of “Father,” a villain as chilling as he is destructive. The stakes only escalate as the evil spreads, threatening not just Airella’s kingdom but the very threads holding her family and identity together.

What holds this book just shy of a five-star rating is the pacing. With so many twists, mythological threads, and dramatic revelations, a few plot beats feel slightly rushed or underdeveloped—especially in the final third, where multiple high-impact moments arrive in quick succession. A bit more breathing room would’ve added emotional payoff to some of the biggest turns.

I don’t know if I’ve ever given a 2 star rating for a book. Maaaaybe 2.5…

Okay hear me out. This book has potential to be good, but it really let me down. Like, the idea of the plot is good. Lots of twists and turns. However, I feel like it was poorly executed, I guess?

We just jumped in SO fast and within like 5 chapters, we were three weeks into the story and Airella and the guys on the ship with her were besties and in it until the end. Like where was the world building? We just dove right into this world and at the end, I still don’t understand the magic or the world or anything really.

Also on top of being confused by what the world was even like, everything happened SO fast but also slow at the same time? Idk, this was a weird read for me. It felt rushed. There was no descriptions that really helped me picture the world or the people. I couldn’t really relate to the characters at all. I still don’t understand Airella and how she is who she is? It just jumps right into her being this super powerful (apparently magic? Maybe?) person but all the explanation we get is that her dad was some kind of war hero or something. Idk.

Finishing this book felt like a big task. Took me way longer than it normally would for me to read a book of this size because I kept getting distracted or not really wanting to read it. I love that so many people seem to love this book, but it definitely wasn’t my type of writing, I guess.

I will be reading the prequel, and I’m hoping it puts a whooooole lot of things together, because I’ll be pretty let down if it doesn’t.

Book Review of ‘ Isle of Beasts and Shadows’ by McCayleigh Daniels.
Received this book with my ARC of Isle of Lies and Legends.

The story evolves around Airella who gets summoned by the king to venture off to a mysterious island to scout if it is inhabitable. There she faces creatures that were supposed to be only folklore. One of them is Sirius, a reaper bound to the isle. But their attraction to each other is other worldly.
But an even darker power threatens mankind’s existence, and now they have to find the means to fight it off.

Airella is a fierce woman, but her naivety was sometimes off setting. Maybe because sometimes the story felt rushed that I couldn’t really connect with her.
I liked Sirius’ character. The cold reaper who’s cold heart thawed and wanting and needing to discover more, that he was denied of exploring what is beyond die to being tied to the isle.
Jonathan was such a delight to have in this book, kept it flowy with his positive attitude.
🌶️ is not really there, with a few hints here or there and few kisses, but that’s all.

I liked the storyline, the plot was great, but like in the other book it felt a little rushed at times. Others might say it is fast paced, but I would have loved to see certain scenes delved into more.
All in all still enjoyed the book because of the storyline itself. And I really want to know what happens next, because that ending? Uhm yeah, I need a HEA for them!
A 4/5⭐️ still because the plot has so much to offer which I hope in a book 3? will be delved in more

Isle of Beasts and Shadows is a spellbinding, action-packed fantasy that immerses readers into a richly detailed world where magic, mystery, and danger intertwine at every corner. From the very first page, Daniels captures your imagination with her vivid world-building and unforgettable characters, delivering a high-stakes adventure that feels as expansive as it is intimate.

Daniels excels in crafting a world full of wonder and peril.
Whether it’s battling fierce creatures, navigating treacherous alliances, or facing moments of deep personal loss, Daniels truly understands the importance of painting a story in your mind.

Our heroine, Airella, is a compelling and multi-dimensional character. Her emotional depth is one of the strongest aspects of the book—she’s not a perfect hero, but a flawed, vulnerable individual whose growth throughout the story is both relatable and inspiring.

One of Daniel’s standout qualities is her ability to blend light and dark themes. The story explores love, betrayal, loyalty, and redemption, often with a haunting edge. The island’s eerie atmosphere is balanced by moments of hope and connection, creating a nuanced emotional landscape that makes the story more than just an action-packed

McCayleigh Daniels has crafted a thrilling and immersive tale that is both a page-turner and an emotional journey. Highly recommended for anyone looking to lose themselves in a world of magic and mystery.

I just can’t wait to see what she does next!

I love the concept of this book, an absent father, abandoning his family for the people of their country,he was being a fearless warrior/leader and father to countless soldiers, his death and legacy, she’s abducted to follow in his footsteps and going to a mysterious island. Weird stuff is happening and they are thrust into a supernatural world. Ok I’m in it.

It got confusing at times because one line would be from Johnathon’s perspective and then the next was Airella’s. I’m guessing 3rd person ish. I wish I had a better understanding of who Airella is, more of a background at the beginning, it really just jumps into the story and it mentions their strength and skill making work of the tents, what strength and what skill did she possess? I’ve been given little information on that and it’s like that throughout the whole book.

There is a lot of death, do not like a character cause they prob gonna die lol. I was just left with wanting more. There was just too much going on at once and not enough at the same time haha. Id say this has a lot of promise and as previously stated, the premise is cool. I’m so thankful to the author for letting me read it. The cover is beautiful, bravo, it’s what got my attention. I think with some tweaking, they have something in their hands. Romantasy is hard to write, I could never do it so it’s amazing what the author has accomplished so far.

I’d rate it a 2-2.5 stars.

What to Expect:
💛Dark Epic Fantasy
🖤Enemies to Lovers
💛Forbidden Love
🖤Strong FMC
💛SLOW BURN!
🖤Morally Grey MMC
💛Found Family
🖤DARK Magic
💛Deadly Secrets

I was completely swept away by Isle of Beasts and Shadows—from the very FIRST WORD, McCayleigh Daniels had me ADDICTED to the eerie, richly imagined island full of ancient secrets, deadly creatures, and a creeping sense of danger that never gave me a chance to breathe!!! The world-building is absolutely stunning—lush, haunting, and alive with magic (you know you HAVE to have some type of magic in a fantasy world!!)—and the way the world is layered in the island’s lore had me hanging on every single reveal. Airella’s journey hit me hard—she’s fierce, flawed, and so achingly human, and watching her evolve through heartbreak and betrayal… pushing her to raw survival was both powerful and extremely emotional. Her dynamic with Sirius?? I was screaming, crying, throwing up!!!—the slow-burn tension and subtle vulnerability between them completely wrecked me!! This book gave me everything I crave in a fantasy and then made it DARK!!!: immersive atmosphere, complex characters, fast-paced action, and those quiet moments that punch you right in the heart and soul. On to the next!!!

A HUGE Thank you to McCayleigh Daniels and to The Nerd Fam for sending this one over! It was sooo good and I will definitely be keeping up with this series. I need ALL the things!!

3.75 rounded up for Goodreads

This was a pretty interesting read. Confusing at some times for me but I did enjoy the premise and overall plot.

One issue I had that kind of has me on the fence here is the pacing. At times it was trucking along just fine then I felt confused as to what was happening. I felt lost on Airella gaining power and becoming a warrior. I felt one moment she was confused and questioning what was going on to her being strong and powerful. Would of loved to see some growth in that aspect. Also, I was completely lost with the romance between her and Sirius. I didn't get it and just didn't understand it.

On the plus side, the action sequences were fun. Really enjoyed the descriptive narrative of everything. You really can get a sense of the surroundings and landscape that the story is unfolding in. The writing, in my opinion, was a big attribute to setting the story and characters in their environment. The isle was very intriguing and would love to get some more lore and background on it as well as the miscreants. The villains were done well!

I do feel the ending left me with way more questions about the book as a whole than answers. But hey, that's why we get a second book sometimes and I'm interested in grabbing it up when it releases to see what's coming up next!

An Unforgettable Journey into a World of Monsters and Magic

Isle of Beasts and Shadows is an epic romantic fantasy that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Daniels has masterfully created a world rich with lore, where magic, danger, and intrigue collide in unexpected ways.

The heroine, Airella, is a compelling and deeply layered character whose journey of self-discovery and power is both thrilling and emotional. The battle she faces within herself adds a captivating psychological depth to the story, making her struggle all the more relatable. You can’t help but root for her as she navigates a world filled with Miscreants, magic, and an ever-present threat that keeps you guessing.

The relationships in the book, especially Airella’s connection with Sirius, Jonathan, and her brother Arii, are beautifully written and filled with emotion. And the suspense surrounding Sirius’s fate keeps you hooked until the very last page. Talk about a PLOT. TWIST.

With stunning world-building and a story filled with heart-pounding action and heartfelt moments, Isle of Beasts and Shadows is a must-read for fans of romantic fantasy. I’m so sad I have to wait for the next book, I need it NOW! I can’t wait to see where Daniels takes this saga next!

To be honest, this book was kind of a mixed bag for me. To start off, this is only an opinion. If this book interests you, please go give it a read. We all have different opinions and views, and this is just another one of them.
At the core of this book, you can tell it was written with love. The concepts of the story and the characters had promise but for me didn’t really connect. It reminds me of a puzzle where the pieces don’t really fit well together.
I enjoyed the main character Airella and her journey of following in her father’s footsteps of being a warrior. Her romance with Sirius was kind of flat at times and didn’t really excite me. Him being a reaper miscreant and the race of miscreants as a whole were a concept I wish were explored in more depth. I just think the world as a whole could’ve used more grounded and rounded.
I wouldn’t say I was completely disappointed by this book, like I said at the core, you can tell it’s a story crafted with love. it was an uneven start, yes, but I will for sure be continuing the series and seeing where the author will take this series.

When the Reaper has a heart, the Hellion has a conscience, and the Shadows are sentient; you get the Isle of Beasts and Shadows.

Our FMC Airella is captured or rather enlisted (at the stake of her family’s survival) to follow in her well regarded late father’s path. She is striking with her blonde hair and mismatched eyes, but they want her for the characteristics that will make her an asset to their efforts of expanding the kingdom to a recently re-discovered island to save them from war.

She befriends Jonathan, her father’s protégé, who trains her on their journey to the Forgotten Isle. However, the creatures ( of the Isle have other plans once the humans reach soil. They encounter Sirius, a miscreant known as a reaper, who gives them a warning in a single word: Run

This story was a slightly dark tale but definitely had me pulled in. You didn’t know who to root for, or what to expect and that is what made these characters great. You wanted to know more and needed to unravel the secrets. I am hoping for another book!

This was… Interesting. The plot starts out fairly straightforward (as most books do) but eventually adds more and more intricacies on. It was almost too many to the point in confusion, but not quite which I was grateful for. I thought the world building was mediocre as well as the character development. This is a very PG fantasy for those worried about spice level!
My biggest contention with this book unfortunately is the writing. It feels very immature to me and overly exaggerated. I felt like the same phrases and emotions were discussed a dozen or so times which completely wore off any effect they were supposed to make on the reader. It felt like each interaction between characters added 5 pages of just expressing feelings. Which I’m all for having an intimate look into the character’s minds but this was over the top.

Let me start by saying that the author did a beautiful narrating her story! Her voice was clear through the entire audiobook. If you haven't figured it out yet, I did listen to the book. I am an avid listener and typically do not have any problems following along with a story.
This book had a lot of promise from what I could piece together with the plot, but I left feeling like some parts were rushed that I wish had been drawn out more. I was craving more depth and substance to the characters, they felt flat, and it made it difficult to connect to their journey and the story. There were also several parts that felt cluttered and confusing, names used interchangeably (I understand why they were used that way based on what was happening), but it still made it harder to follow. This story could be great with some more workshopping to it, but as it is, it was my most difficult read this year.

A magical romantasy set in a complex world full of miscreants and men who want more power than what they are owed. I loved all of the complex cast of characters, especially the FMC that is doing all she can to live up to expectations set by her father. I loved the world building and tension between the FMC and the miscreant that she works with to save her people when they reach the isle that could be either her peoples salvation or destruction!

There is a good development of all of the characters and they work on overcoming their own personal struggles to try to overcome the forces working against them. I couldn’t put the book down once I started and with how it ended I need to know what happens next!! My rating 4.3/5

Thank you so much to the author for the gifted copy of this book, all opinions given are my own!

This YA story is about a great general’s daughter, Airella, who is sent on a mission to a newly discovered island. She has no previously obvious training, since she didn’t know much about what her father was to the kingdom. Then everything was happening so quickly with little explanation as to why she was important and why she would be a leader besides having some traits that her father had. The flow of the story was choppy, with many gaps between events. There were many repetitive descriptions that threw me out of the flow of the story. However, I was intrigued by the overall story knowing there were more books. This book wasn’t my favourite, but be sure to read it anyway because the prequel novella, Isle of Lies and Legends, has a great story and is amazing (review coming).
