Spanky is a Shih Tzu, a sweet and fluffy rescue puppy who cannot bear to part with his blanky. Some of the other dogs at the shelter tease Spanky by calling him a baby because he just can’t let go of his blanky. Spanky needs his blanky for comfort, but he doesn’t understand why. Will Spanky be pressured to give up his blanky to fit in with the other dogs, or will he be true to himself?

Gorgeously illustrated, heartwarming children's fable about a shelter dog literally clinging to the comforts and memories of his old life.

Just as she did in her television adaptation of Black Cake, author Marissa Jo Cerar explores, with sensitivity and emotional honesty, issues of identity, family, friendship, narrativity, personal history, and the totemic reminders of where we come from and who we are. Spanky may be a canine protagonist, but Spanky is a humanist story -- about the (in this instance literal) threads that connect us to others.

I should also note Hanna Semenova's artwork is wonderfully expressive; she endows each dog at the shelter with a look and personality all its own.

Cerar is an enviably talented screenwriter; with Spanky and His Blanky, she's proven herself to be quite an extraordinary children's author, too. Share this lovely bedtime story with a child in your life.

Spanky and His Blanky is a cute book about a puppy in the shelter who has a security blanky. The other pups tease him, but his kind roommate helps him remember the importance of the blanky - that is reminds him of his mother. On adoption day, he meets a girl who also has her blanky, and a very special bond of shared experience brings them together.

This book is a very sweet read and the illustrations are lovely. But it's the message the book shares that is sweetest of all. The story shares the importance of remembering who you are and what is important to you (your memories of home). It also bridges the stressful process of being adopted and blending into a new family, while keeping who you are prominent.

This book is an important read for kids especially for foster families and adoptive families. It also reminds the other kids on the playground not to tease someone for having a comfort item, because they do not know their story.

This is such a beautiful children’s book that I wish I had when growing up. The illustrations were so cute and I absolutely fell in love with Spanky and his friends at the shelter. The theme of having something that brings you comfort that other people don’t understand was what I hooked onto the most. This book is a must-read for everyone!!

Disclaimer: I’m a softie for animals. We have 2 pups, 2 adorable bunnies that chew everything in sight, and a duck. Yes, a real duck that waddles around pooping. They all get tucked in at night with blankies and lullabies. They each have a story and have been saved and spoiled. We changed each of their names and now feel horrible about that.

This adorable story is relatable to how the pup must feel. We could easily see how this scenario would transfer to adopted and foster children, and is simply genius. Remember when I said I’m a softie for animals? I cried about midway - let me say, they were happy tears. Gulp. I believe littles will want to read this book over and over (and want to go to an animal shelter). The pages are beautifully illustrated and help to convey the story perfectly. The ending is the best ever and happy water droplets may or may not have leaked from my eyes.
