Messy but interesting! A diamond goes missing during a photoshoot, and suddenly it’s time to lock the doors and find the thief! While the mystery had some cool moments, it didn't keep me on the edge of my seat like I hoped it would

‘Where’s the Bulgari?’ A man’s groggy voice echoed in the cavernous photo studio.

‘The necklace is gone! Nellie, where is it?’ The woman sounded shrill and accusatory. ‘Did you put it somewhere? Did you ’tak‘ it? This is all your fault!’

No, Nellie didn’t take it. She’s almost obsessively meticulous about what she does, and anyway, she was fetching someone a drink when it went missing. And why was the guard, who was supposed to be keeping an eye on it, dozing in his chair?

It’s a photo shoot for ‘ELLE’ with a glamorous star from the nineties modelling all the bright red outfits.

I enjoyed the sly reference to Taylor Swift (and may have missed many more) when Marlee is described this way.

“Marlee, a superstar of the nineties … wasn’t first choice for this shoot. Instead, she’d been called in as a backup when Lindsay Speed, the hottest singer on the planet, had pulled out last minute due to a scheduling conflict.”

Marlee’s happy to model gorgeous gowns and wear the $3 million dollar Bulgari necklace they’d borrowed for the cover shoot. There is history, as the saying goes, between some of the other people in the room, so everyone is blindly accusing everyone else, until eventually, poor Nellie, who is very much at the bottom of the pecking order, is saddled with the blame.

But she and her friend Charles, who knows she’d never steal anything, set about clearing her name. The subsequent ‘investigation’ and result make me glad I don’t work with any of these people.

No dead bodies in this part of Amazon’s #Busybodiescollection, but there was enough guilt to go around. I enjoyed this third story in the collection of six.

the setup…
Nellie Otis is a fashion assistant at Elle, responsible for the “fashion closet” and she’s on location at their current photo shoot. After she returns from getting a drink for Marlee Price, the aging famed musician at the center of the project (she’s the replacement star for the one who fell ill), everything goes crazy as the $3 million Bulgari necklace on loan for shoot is now missing. The armed guard who minutes ago was caught snoozing is now searching frantically for the piece and sort of holding everyone hostage in the meantime. Some of the fingers are being pointed at Nellie so she’s got motivation to help find the precious piece.

the heart of the story…
There’s more here than what is on the surface. Charlotte Plepto is the new editor-in-chief who unceremoniously forced out her predecessor with wealthy Daddy’s bankroll. Pointer, the disgraced photographer, is on his first major assignment after having been accused of misbehaving with the models and he has an axe to grind. Nellie has her hands full and she’s the low woman on the proverbial totem pole and her boss, Farrah Freeze the fashion director, isn’t making it easy.

the narration…
Brittany Pressley is one of my favorite narrators and she brought the characters and story to life. And, she delivered the fun.

the bottom line…
This was more The Devil Wears Prada intrigue than mystery but it was fun. I had a sense of who was really behind the theft and got most of it right. It didn’t matter because it was the behind the scenes treachery that took center stage. 3.5 stars

2.5 ⭐️

Emma Rosenblum, (author of Very Bad Company and former executive editor at Elle) sets her contribution to the Busybodies Collection at a photo shoot for Elle.

A $3 million Bulgari diamond necklace disappears during the locked photo shoot, setting up a locked room mystery where all the suspects are on set. Of course the lowly assistant is blamed, and she must solve the crime if she hopes to keep her job.

The guilty party seemed obvious and the Fashion World doesn’t really resonate with me, so it’s been my least favorite of the collection so far.

Busybodies, is described as a collection of mysteries featuring amateur gumshoes who stumble upon peculiar cases. Read or listen to each cozy story in a single sitting. AVAILABLE FREE on Amazon Prime and Kindle Unlimited.

I am eating my words at the moment because Crime of Fashion #3 in the Amazon Originals Busybodies collection completely failed to engaged me.

A $3 million Bulgari diamond necklace disappears from a locked photo shoot and Nellie the lowly assistant is blamed. She didn’t take the necklace and therefore must find the real thief ASAP in order to avoid being fired.

No, just no. This one bored me to tears.

Even Brittany Pressley’s fantastic narration could not save this one!

I was bored. Also can we be very clear that OCD does not equal Type A??!!!?? It doesn't take that much research to figure that out. I was a bit bothered by it when it was first mentioned at the beginning but let it go as a popular "slang" for someone needing to be neat and orderly (even though it shouldn't be). But she kept mentioning "her OCD", like a lot, when it came to just wanting things put in an orderly manner, that is not what OCD is.

2.5 rounded up. A very average story. I couldn’t bring myself to care who had stolen the canary diamond Bulgari necklace at a prestigious magazine photo shoot. 🥱

Another home run of a short story in the busy bodies collection. I liked how everything came together.

Full review: Well we get a little of "The Devil Wears Prada" with "Agatha Christie" in this one. I really liked how Rosenblum sets the stage as we follow Nellie, who is a closet assistant (yeah I think I got that right) who works at Elle and is at a photo shoot when a priceless Bulgari necklace goes missing. Though the necklace is found in the new magazine's editor in chief's bag, she quickly accuses Nellie. Nellie, who does not want to be out of a job, and also has a bit of OCD (okay a lot) investigates to save her job, but also, because she likes puzzles.

The whole story is a great send-up of fashion magazines and famous shoots galore. Nellie and her bestie at work, Charles were fun and I liked how Nellie solved the case. Though the ending leaves a fly in the ointment so to speak.

This book made 40 pages feel so long. There were too many characters who were introduced but had zero personality. Within the first page the author uses OCD to describe someone who likes things to be neat and orderly and continues to use it in this manner throughout which was infuriating.

Love Emma Rosenblum. She stayed so true to her writing style despite this being a short story, which I always appreciate. I feel like this story was very devil wears Prada but make it a mystery.
So cute and so good.

I want to give this negative stars. The characters suck. The writing is drab and probably has the most style / grammatical errors in the whole collection. This is a published book but reads like a Wattpad fanfiction that wasn't even beta read.

Arguably, this whole collection is the worst Amazon has put out. All of these are riddled with grammar errors, are incredidly choppy reads, and suffer from a blah sameness.

This was a very boring novella. It did not ever get exciting and I am not sure why it was written for the masses to read.

Crime of Fashion by Emma Rosenblum is short story number three of six in the Busybodies Collection where "There’s A Mystery Around Every Corner!"

This was a fun little mystery centering around a diamond necklace that goes missing from an ELLE magazine photo shoot. Fashion-closet detective and main character Nellie was a quirky underdog to root for! My one issue with this book was the many characters to quickly learn about and keep straight as the story unfolded. The ending surprised me with a little twist that left me wondering (in a good way)!

Brittany Pressley did a fantastic job narrating, creating different and believable voices for the many characters!

This series features 40-ish page/hour-ish long books, and they're just the sort of story to slip into when you've got just a bit of spare time!

Thank you NetGalley, Brilliance Publishing and Amazon Original Stories for the complimentary audio copy to read and review.

Entertaining relationship listening 😏🤗

This kindle ebook novella is from my Kindle Unlimited account as soon

She is a rising star in the fashion industry but the first choice boughs out. She is upset and things go bad from there.

I would recommend this series and various authors to readers of family and friends relationships in the business world novels 👔🎩 2025

Not my favorite, and didn't like that they left the ending open to the story being continued unless she plans to write more.
