A super-fun and really cute cozy mystery. There's so much I enjoyed in this one--the ghost hunters that are filming a TV show; the lovely inn they're staying at that not only caters to humans but to pets, as well; lots of adorable cats and dogs; ghostly legends; lots of Halloween activities. And it's all set in the pet-friendly town of Wagtail, Virginia. A wonderful read for Halloween. ...more
It's Halloween in Wagtail, VA and the Sugar Maple Inn is hosting a group of ghost hunters. Holly Miller doesn't believe in ghosts, but she knows the Apparition Apprehenders and their proposed television series will bring tourists and money to Wagtail. Just as the spooky festivities for humans and pets alike are ramping up, one of the inn's guests is found dead in the bathhouse of a reportedly haunted old hotel in town. How did someone drown in two feet of water? And is there a murderer lurking i ...more

Howloween in Wagtail, VA finds the Sugar Maple Inn hosting a group developing a TV series--Apparition Apprehenders. They're in Wagtail to investigate rumors of paranormal activity. Holly Miller has moved into the Inn her grandmother, Liesel 'Oma' owns; bringing her dog, Trixie, and cat, Twinkletoes. Sugar Maple Inn is a speciality inn designed for pet owners to bring their beloved pets to enjoy the royal treatment, one and all. A well-written book with a wonderful MC who passively solves the mystery rather than running around like an arrogant idiot interrogating and accusing random people. I can't tell you how much I prefer passive investigations when amateur sleuths are involved. Wagtail sounds like heaven too and the mystery itself was very well plotted.

It's Howloween in Wagtail and the Sugar Maple Inn is filled with guests including some ghost hunters who are hoping to investigate some local ghost legends. The real weirdness begins when Holly's pets Trixie and Twinkletoes find a body at the gazebo which belongs to one of the town's most notoriously haunted places. The body was killed strangely similar to one of their famous legends so the ghost hunters of course are eager to look into it but Holly wants to keep away any bad press before the mu ...more

Ghost hunters descend upon Holly's grandmother's inn in Wagtail. (Wagtail is a pet-friendly town relying on tourism.) When an unpopular woman dressed as a legendary local ghost drowns in two feet of water, Officer Dave and Holly suspect someone helped her. The author included some successful red herrings. The dogs and cats sense things before humans. It's a cute Halloween book. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Jeanie Kanaley. The narrator sometimes read without emotion and often reminded ...more

The story started out really good, but in the middle slowed down and became tedious with descriptions of every meal, every outfit worn and repetitive clues. The ending was all over the place. I did enjoy the cats and dogs.

This is such a cute series. Of course, if you put a dog on the cover, I'm right there! But the mysteries are such fun and the character are very nicely fleshed out. This is a Halloween-themed mystery set in a resort that I would so love to visit.

Can't wait for the next book in the series!

I enjoyed this cozy mystery set at an Inn that caters to people with pets. That's a place I'd like to visit!! I thought the MC was good, and liked it when she attacked the person that was attacking her dog. Plus, there seems to be a little love triangle in the series and those are always fun to watch happen. Not sure I'll read another book in the series, but you never know what I might need to read for challenges!! ...more

Book #107 Read in 2015
The Ghost and Mrs. Mewer by Krista Davis

This is the second installment in a cozy mystery series. Holly has moved to Wagtail, a very pet-friendly town, to help her grandmother at her inn. It is Halloween time and ghost hunters have come to town to film a special. They get a little more than they bargain for when a young woman turns up dead. Was it an accidental drowning or muder? Holly begins her own investigation to try to help her friend Dave, a local police officer. Aided

This is the second book in a delightful series. Wagtail is a town devoted to the love of animals- well mainly dogs and cats. This book starts out with the arrival of a team of Ghost Hunters who are part of a reality show. Holly Miller runs the Sugar Maple Inn and to say they are pet friendly is an understatement. Holly has a dog Trixie and a cat twinkletoes who have as much personality as any of the human characters. And the human characters are a great bunch of people . In this episode it is Ha ...more

I enjoyed this second book in the Paws and Claws series a bit more than the first, but that might be more due to my adjusted expectations than to any real difference in quality. With my vast experience of a single book in the cozy mystery genre, I have a good idea what to expect, and this book met expectations admirably. It’s a cute story, with uncomplicated characters, and not only does this book add on to the DOGGIES(!) from the first book, it has more KITTIES(!). Seriously, who cares why an u ...more
This was a wonderful second addition to a great series.

The characters were all well-rounded and realistic. The setting was also just as superb as it was in the last book.

The mystery was really well thought out with a lot of twists and turns that I wasn't expecting.

I do have two complaints with this book, however. First of all (view spoiler)

This is maybe the most fun Halloween themed book I've read! It's a fabulous follow up to the first in the series, and just as much fun. I found myself wishing it was late October and I was in Wagtail, Virginia, celebrating the holiday with the town. Murder aside, of course.

The mystery was fabulous, with layer upon layer as the truth is revealed. While I puzzled out pieces of it here and there, I was no where near seeing the full picture until it was spelled out, and I was right shocked by the en

If only Wagtail existed! The second book in the Paws & Claws mystery series finds ghost hunters aka Apparition Apprehenders to investigate possible paranormal activities. What better way to come to town during Halloween! Holly has her hands filled after finding a body and trying to help Dave convince people it was not an accidental drowning. The ghost hunters, townspeople and various guests keeps the whodunit going to the very end. Recipes in the back are for humans and pets.

This was a fun book to read around Halloween. This is the second book in the series and I am hooked. The characters are well written. They are diverse in age and personality which is what I love to see in a cast of cozy mystery characters. There is something for everyone in this series. I also really enjoy the animal cast of characters. They have as much personality as the human characters and lend a lot to the story. The book has a steady pace and a mystery that kept me guessing until the revea ...more

She is helping her "Oma" German for Grandmother out running the pet friendly hotel that not not only welcomes people but our four legged pets. There's a new reality TV show crew coming with dreams of developing a reality TV show called " Apparition Apprehenders" . They come just in time to help celebrate the "Howloween" festivities in Wagtail with activities revolving around Halloween.

Another excellent entry in this new series from Krista Davis. I want to move to Wagtail! Love the town, the inn, the people and the animals! A very good story, set during Wagtail's annual Howl-O-Ween celebration. Holly discovers a body in shallow water at the abandoned Wagtail Springs Hotel. What looks like an accident turns out to be murder, and looks like most, if not all, of the Apparition Apprehenders are suspects. ★★★★✩ Loved it. I want to move to Wagtail. Or did I say that after the last book? Ms. Davis has a great way of describing characters - human or animal - so that it is very easy for me to picture them.

I really enjoyed this installment of the series. I like the series regulars and Wagtail is such a fun town and I love all the animals. I really liked the addition of the Apparition Apprehenders and enjoyed having them as guests. There was a lot more going on in this story than I ever imagined until it was all revealed. This second book in the series picks up a month later with Holly settling in to her new life in Wagtail with Trixie and Twinkletoes. The animals are glad to be back and make new friends with the inn guests- both 4 legged and 2 legged. It's almost Howloween and Wagtail is pulling out all the stops. The Ghost and Mrs. Mewer is the second book in the Paws and Claws Mystery series.

This was another enjoyable visit to the Sugar Maple Inn in the pet friendly community of Wagtail, Virginia. Halloween will soon be here and the staff at the Sugar Maple is busy with decoration at the inn and in the community as well. Most all of the rooms are taken up by the Apparition Apprehenders, a group of ghost hunters who are there to try and capture the ghost that might inhabit Wagtail. But then, when Holly f

I absolutely love this series. The first book was great, but the second book was amazing. I loved the mystery, there were so many twist and turns through out the telling. At one time, there were so many plot twists, that I just stopped trying to figure it all out and just went along with the ride. And what an amazing ride it was. I would never have came up with that ending.
