“You don’t have to go far to be in a different world.”

A just-fired 27 year-old editor makes this observation after taking a spontaneous trip from Manhattan to Montauk, a seaside hamlet on the tip of Long Island’s South Fork. While the nameless narrator does manage to replace the concrete jungle with ocean beaches, he isn’t able to shake the malaise of his quarter-life crises. In fact, Montauk’s off-season solitude only serves to feed his own sense of loneliness.
