“The end of the world doesn’t happen with a bang. It takes slightly longer than that but not by much. Research projects, Gross Anatomy class, tests and fancy coffee drinks will cease to be important. The fight for her life will become the only thing that matters.”
Reagan McClane is a prodigy med school student on the brink of a brilliant career, but the United States and the rest of the world are headed towards total economic and social collapse. And it doesn’t take more than a few hours for mass crime, looting and pillaging to spread across the country like a plague. A brutal attack at her university leads to a fight for her life before Reagan barely makes it home to the safety of her awaiting grandparents and sisters on their family farm in Tennessee.
Three sexy Army Rangers, one of whom is married to Reagan’s eldest sister, will join the McClane family to build their farm into an impenetrable fortress that they will fight to keep, no matter the cost. Reagan will find that defending her hardened, scarred heart against ever letting anyone in again will prove even more difficult than survival as one Ranger in particular tries to invade it.
The McClane Apocalypse is a story of love, survival and the importance of family during the worst of times imaginable.
I live on a small farm in Ohio where I tend a shabby garden, take care of my crazy horses and chickens and enjoy writing. Check out my website: www.katemorrisauthor.com for recipes from the book, my blog, articles and information about books two and three. Book Two out now.
I am the author of the new trilogy, The McClane Apocalypse. Books one and two are out now. Check them out on Amazon, Barnes & Noble or iBooks.
The McClane Apocalypse, Book One of the series. Follow the McClane family as they struggle to survive on their TN farm. Romantic suspense filled with hot Army Rangers and a broken and beautifully flawed female protagonist. Don't read chapter two if you need to be anywhere any time soon!
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LG8H7KQ The exciting second installment of The McClane Apocalypse is out now!! Fraught with human emotion, complex relationships, and the continued fight for survival, book two takes the reader on a thrill ride that doesn’t let up- not even after the last page has been turned.
DNF@27% because I just couldn't bear to read any more of this drivel. The McClane Apocalypse: Book 1 was irritating and misleading. Instead of the apocalyptic setting and promised action packed survival/adventure storyline, there’s:
- Boring plot full of mundane scenes of domesticity and slow excruciating narrative to emphases said mind numbing scenes until you start to wonder if you are reading the right book and the genre you wanted.
- Pointless monologue and dialogue that add nothing to the apocalyptic plot or character development.
- Annoying stereotypes and sexism about big strong he men (Army Rangers) who should protect the feminine little women as they (the little ladies) spend a lot of time being happily domestic, cooking up a storm and doing other domestic 'feminine' things being maternal and protective about the children in the house, worrying about Reagan (the heroine) and worrying about absent husbands' and brother etc...
- All the characters were stereotypical and annoying in one way or another. I didn't like Reagan, she was unnecessarily rude, sarcastic and stubborn; she behaved like a teen with serious emotional issues and a huge chip on her shoulder.
- Sudden shift in POV between several characters made it difficult to know who the main character is and what’s going on.
Other reviewers say it only gets worse as you get deeper into the book. Yup, I’m done with this book.
This could quite possibly be the worst book I have ever read. It's a train wreck on so many levels. Racist. Poorly researched. Ham fisted.
The bad guys are all, druggies, drinking alcohol, hippies, rapists. And no doubt democrats. I imagine for this author all of those are forgivable except being a democrat.
The good guys are honestly kind of creepy. In any other book they would be the bad guys. I guess for right wing christians flashing your penis at a woman you're interested in is flirting ... yeah that happened.
Unfortunately, this is is one of the VERY rare occasions that I didn't finish a book. I couldn't stand any of the characters (the protagonist in particular is a self-absorbed, snobby, condescending brat) and the plot was excruciatingly slow and unrealistic. But what I really couldn't handle was the sexist tones (and a few that were borderline racist). Women in the kitchen, men protecting the farm. A girl allowed to join a deadly mission (where she oushoots highly experienced military men) but forbidden to chop firewood as it's too dangerous. A blind girl forbidden to walk the property she spent most of her life on because she tripped over a hose that somebody carelessly left lying around (the same person who forbids her to leave the house, no less). That same girl basically told she had no right experiencing anything of a sexual nature (not even a kiss) despite being well and truly over the age of consent and clearly wanting to. And of course, the men are all super macho, totally built, and apparently not possessing a brain between them (excluding the grandfather). There's plenty else that irritated me: a near-rape victim who still can't be touched by anyone - not even family - without losing the plot. A young woman who has absolutely no remorse taking human lives -admittedly evil ones, but still... Jokes that simply aren't funny. "Sissy boy" - HIGHLY offensive to any remotely decent(or musically inclined) male. Prayer references at nearly every meal. Okay, they're religious, I get it already. Do we need the reminder every time? Why not remind us that they sit on their chairs, or pick up their cutlery too? It's completely unnecessary. To top it of, it was poorly written. I have enormous respect for anyone who can write one book, let alone three, but volume does not equal skill. I truly feel dreadful leaving such a negative review, but I feel justified in my comments.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I think this could have been a pretty good book, but honestly I hated the heroine and I hated all the switching from character to character. It would not have been so bad if it was switching from the two main characters that this story was supposed to be about, but it covered every character in the book and you did not see the main characters nearly as much as you should.
I also hated the female heroine. She was whiny, weak and bitchy towards the males. I thought she would be a strong character, and the author tried to make her seem strong, but it did not come off that way. It felt more like a pouting teenager who didn't get her way. Just all around bad character. And the males seemed a bit weak too. I mean these are ex Rangers...they should have been tough, no-nonsense types but they felt weak as well. Not sure exactly how, but that's how they came across on the pages.
I got about 3\4 of the way through and finally just gave up.
Reviewing this book was difficult for me and I almost didn't, because I like to keep things positive. I bought it as it was on the "similar books" read to a few other apocalyptic titles I recently read. Ultimately I felt that since I've reviewed all the other books I've read in the last year; I really shouldn't hold back simply because I couldn't give it a five star rating.
I am not a fan of present tense writing and probably wouldn't have bought it had I known; the synopsis is in past tense, but the entire book is written in present tense. It's a tricky style to write, and I don't think that the author has the fluidity and writing style needed to stay in the present moment, and this book was too entrenched in the mundane to have the pace needed to make it work. The first chapter was good; nuclear war has basically destroyed entire sections of the world, and with the fallout wiping half of the USA off the map, the world has quickly descended into completely anarchy. Reagan is at medical school when it happens, and in a population center that is now over-run with looters and murderers, she has a tough start to try and get back home to her family farm. Even with the annoyance of present tense, I found this a gripping start.
However, once we're at the farm, it moves into fairly slow paced descriptions of prepping behaviour. Now I have no problem with that, I enjoy a slower book, I enjoy reading about the farmstead, the supplies, the security, it's all very Tom-Sawyer in feel as it focuses on the minute details. The problem is, the simple language, the slow sentences and the present tense add up to this being quite boring. There are chapters that will focus on stores and cooking and family plans, and then suddenly it'll jump a month or two and nothing has seemingly happened. There are very brief flurries of activities, such as when the family has to deal with some looters at a neighbouring farm, but 90% of the book is nothing-happening-very-slowly.
Still, that's not my problem with it. I can appreciate a slower paced book and I think I'd still have given it a solid 3.5 stars if it wasn't for the sexism. I am tired of romance books (which this book is at it's core) that show little respect to the female characters. Despite giving us a kick-ass female lead in Reagan who is a feisty angry little fighter with a ton of gumption and a sense of humour, she isn't respected. John decides he wants her, and that's that. He decides she wants him, and that's that. Okay, so there's a hint that she wants him in the way she looks at him (apparently) - but the author is giving John too much freedom to roll with that. It gets to the point where her grandparents are okay with a 6ft soldier who she has repeatedly, loudly, angrily said no to, sleeping in her room and just whipping off his towel and laughing at her reaction as she protests, whilst invading her privacy completely. Yeah yeah, "she wants it really", the author would know, she's writing it - but the whole attitude disgusted me a lot. This 21 year old girl has PTSD, has suffered, hates being touched, has repeatedly told this guy to back off, has told her family she's not comfortable with him, and they say "tough s*** darling, he's sleeping in your room" and everyone's just okay with it because they think they should be together even when she's saying no. I would not be cool with this happening in the real world.
On top of that there are a lot of stereotypical references that are old fashioned and sexist. The men are referred to multiple times as being meat eaters, and unable to cook, about knowing nothing about the kitchen, how they'd only be able to survive off deer if the women weren't around (it's a working farm, picking some vegetables is not that challenging). All the women are tiny and petite, all the men are massive and can easily overwhelm them. There are multiple references to how the women wouldn't be able to fight, so the only thing they can do is knee a guy in the balls and run. The men are fighters, the women stay home and pickle the vegetables and hide, waiting to be protected, except for Reagan, who really needs John to take care of her even when she's saying no, of course. The more I read, the more blatant it got.
Don't get me wrong, these are nuanced references, and perhaps I'm over sensitive and reading too much into this, and coming out looking like a ranting, crazy person - but I was just really uncomfortable with the gender roles in this book and I'm really tired of romantic books not giving women the respect they deserve, and making them subservient to men but wrapping it in a ribbon that says it's romantic and all in the name of love in the end. It was a great premise, and a good start, but ultimately a slow, stale book with some things that made me lose respect for the majority of the characters.
This book rocked! The action starts right out in a big way! And it never lets up the whole way through. Every time I thought it was going to slow down & things would mellow out, something new would happen & I'd be back on the edge of my seat. The depth of some of the characters was great. Some of them are pretty screwed up. Reminds me of my own family! But they wil do anything for each other. Love the characters and the family. The Army Rangers were a bunch of bada**es. Loved that it isn't wimpy and watered down. The way this family handles the scum of the earth is exactly how I would in an apocalypse. The only bad part? I gotta wait till July to read the next part.
The story line was interesting but the writing is absolutely horrific. The main character Reagan is a rude, nasty, stubborn brat. I was really disappointed, the plot synopsis made this book seem like it was going to be so bloody awesome, but it really just sucked. I hate giving bad reviews but geez I can't say this enough....skip this.
Thought it sounded interesting and I love post-apocalyptic type books, but after reading some critical reviews on Amazon, I'll probably never read anything by this author. She comments on too many of the critical reviews, trying to sound polite and pleasant, but really she's taking shots at her critics. It's very unprofessional and makes me think that the accusations of her buying 5 star reviews has some merit to it. She clearly can't handle criticism of any kind.
Also, third person present tense is always a mess and should never be used. Atrocious.
Wow what a great find, I love the family's dynamics going on and how they all came together in this post apocalyptic story. If you are look for a great story teller Kate Morris delivers it. I'm so excited to have found this book. Another author recommended it on her Facebook page. I can't wait until the next book is released. This is a must read.
I love this book and am planning on reading the next one today. I love all the characters in it. one can almost believe they are part of the story. the author has done a great job of weaving all the character lines together and yet giving individual space for the story to evolve. I would recommend the book highly it's a great read.
I wasn't sure about reading this one, but I'm glad I did. Never heard of this author though. I usually like zombie books, but I do enjoy a good apocalyptic fiction book. This isn't like most that I've read. It's really only about this family which she does a good job of character developing. I could see it getting made into a movie. I really enjoyed it and told two of my girlfriends about it already. love the underlying romance too. and I'm a sucker for a dude in uniform, lol!
Action packed and thrilling from the start, I really enjoyed this book! The circumstances that led to war weren't fully explained, but it wasn't detrimental to the story. The aftermath was very well thought through and I couldn't help but wonder what I would do in a similar situation.
This is a book. that I could actually see happening. When two world super powers go to war and start throwing nukes at each other. And the rest of the world, catches the aftermath.
First, there were a lot of errors in this book, grammar, word usage etc (chic instead of chick). An editor could have helped with this. I also question the science of how a nuclear exchange so far away could trigger the earthquakes and tsunamis. There was a bit too much religion too, and if Reagan swears like a sailor then these people have not met many sailors. Some of the plot was weak. We skip from the attack on Reagan at the school to a month later? Thirty guys with guns can be repelled by 3 military guys and a women with a huge chip on her shoulder? This is not so much a post-apocalyptic story as much as a romance novel set in a post-apocalyptic scenario. There was no escape from will-they-get-together for John and Reagan and Kelly and Hannah. No escape. There were glimpses of what was needed to survive in the new world and I did rather like the people at the farm, except one. Reagan was a vile, insufferable brat. I get that she has PTSD, but Kelly's younger siblings, who went through a harrowing ordeal too, show more decency and maturity than Reagan. She is supposed to be a brilliant medical mind but is completely and utterly lacking in any compassion or empathy. Had she been killed off in this book, I might have been tempted to given Book 2 a try, but no thanks.
2.5 stars It was an ok read. It took me sometime to get into the book because of the writing: it's writen in third person and I don't like it very much. Maybe that's why I did not connect very deeply with the characters. Nonetheless I got used to it and at the end it did not bother me that much.
I like the fact that the book is writen in many POVs from the different MCs (varios people from the McCalane family and friends). I found it quite nice to read about the thoughts and feelings of different people.
I'm really into apocalypse romance because of the adventure and because of the romance. But the romance in this book was too light and the adventure was low☹️ Another thing I didn't enjoy were the descriptions: it's a little repetitive and too explanatory of things I don't really care about (food, harvesting, cooking...).
But I have to say that the storyline is good and it got me interested, so much so that I think I will keep reading book 2 😜
QUICK REVIEW Enjoyment: 2.5/5 Writing style: 2/5 Storyline: 4/5 Heroes: 3/5 Heroines: 3/5 Secondary characters: 3/5 Chemistry/attraction: 2.5/5 Romance: 2/5 Hotness/Sex scenes: 0/5 Angst: 1/5 Drama level: 1/5 Humor level:2/5 Depth of the book: 1/5 POV: multiple POVs of different MCs
This book was amazing. I am in love with the mcclane family. I wish my family was more like them. They literally do anything for each other. They support and protect each other. This does have quite a lot of violence in it. So I would warn against younger readers getting their hands on this. It's well written, but unusual. Third person present tense if different but I did like it. Makes you feel like you are right there with the family. I found her facebook page and signed on over there for updates on this family. This author is very down to earth and will take time out of her day to talk to you on fbook. There is another sci fi writer who uses this tense of 3rd person preset. I don't quite understand why some of thee reviewers didn't like the main character. unless they maybe didn't understand her. I get it. She's damaged. She's supposed to be hard and distrustful. I like her a lot. and SHe's funny as hell. I can't wait for the third book to come out. Have it in my tbr list. keep up the great work, Miss Morris! Keep writing this family. and Please do NOT kill any of the characters off. I'm hoping for more books after the third.... hint!
Firstly a few negatives. This book was a bit sluggish to start. I Feel that The author also missed a great opportunity to discuss Reagen's journey from the university to the home settlement. As well as what happened just prior to the men abandoning the Humvee. Those of you who have read this will get what I mean. I also find it a bit of a stretch that no one finds their home or that no neighbours call on 'doc'. Surely he would be known in the local community as a doctor. This is supposed to be a small town. And EVERYONE knows what everyone is up to in small communities. However as far as 'book escapism' goes it's an interesting tale. I actually liked the switching perspectives- Reagan is a petulant character and just reading her story only would have had me deleting this book after the first few chapters.

This book was so much more and so much better than I expected. I don't tend to get out of my comfort zone much with reading so when I heard the word "apocalypse" I pictured aliens or zombies so right away I figured I wouldn't be into this book. It was our book club pick so I had to pick it up and am I ever glad I did!! Just so you know there is no aliens or zombies! I love love love the survival aspect of this book with how the world systems (banks, jails & police) are breaking down due to earthquakes and tsunamis wiping out most of the world. I also really enjoyed the romance in this book. All in all I am really glad I read this and I already bought the second book in this series and can't wait to read it!!!
The character: I liked them. They were nice. Also I liked the chemistry between John and Reagan or Hannah and Kelly. It was cute. Good enough. (3 - 3,5 stars)
The story and plot: This, I don't like the storyline. Nuclear? Muslim terrorist? Racist much? Well, it was horrible. And also I don't get it, what was this book about. Tsunami? And what else? Nothing happened. It was just about how to survive, but from what? That's it. Not clearly smart if you ask me. However, the storyline was rushed from the beginning. (2,5 stars for the story and 2 stars for the plot)
I shouldn't like this book. It's like post apocalyptic chick lit. But for some reason I enjoyed this light hearted read. Maybe it's because it reminds me a little of Little a House on the Prairie.
The story is a family holed up together after the world goes to hell as a result of nukes, tsunamis and earthquakes. This take on PA fiction us more regarding the relationships of the characters rather than the world they live in. However there is plenty of action, just not as much of the gore filled section I am used to.
I ignored the references to sexy Army Rangers as the apocalypse scenario always interests me but I should have listened to myself over the romance element. Three sisters and three Rangers and it seemed obvious from the start how they were going to pair up. Putting that annoyance aside, as the blurb does warn about the romance, my real issue was with the characters, in particular, Reagan, and the plot.
Let me start with the actual disaster itself which was beyond belief for me. North Korea tries to attack South Korea and China and accidently bombs itself before a missile hits each target. Other than China just sitting around watching it happen, ok I can go with this. The UN tells the UK to attack North Korea and Iran which it does without question and decides to just attack Russia too. Yeah right! The UK is not just going to go and do that and the UN are notorious for inaction anyway, never mind the countless meetings and the veto issues that would arise! Then Russia retaliates by attacking UK and France. Here's the good bit-a lot of the missiles miss their land targets and hit the water, causing tsunamis that flood China, UK, France, Russia and the US. Um, yeah. And in spite of this world war, everyone is still going to classes at university and thinking about their future careers...
Reagan, her friend and teacher decide they need to flee. They are to grab any food they find and pack a few essentials. This should be done with haste and instead, they arrange to meet in four hours by which time two are dead. How does it take four hours to pack clothes into a bag and break into a couple of vending machines? Not exactly in a rush eh? Of course the rapists and junkies have attacked the campus but luckily Reagan is pre-med and stitches up her various stab wounds and makes her escape at her leisure, driving miles to her family farm in the dark. Luckily she only collapses after finishing her journey. How convenient!
From that moment on Reagan becomes a complete cow. She knows her grandmother hates swearing, so she swears all the time. She is rude, sulky, whiny and shouts, screams and yells at poor John constantly. What the hell he sees in her is beyond me and there is no chemistry at all in the relationship, just her behaving badly and getting away with it. She is a total bitch and I completely hated her. Even when she is donating blood to an injured man, it is another excuse to yell and sulk and I got very tired of her childishness. She has a dreadful manner in dealing with people for someone who wants to be a doctor.
To be honest there is nothing about the book that I can recommend. The plot was beyond all realism and had me rolling my eyes from the first page. When the boy runs into the class to say the US has been attacked, the teacher starts an in depth discussion explaining the downfall of society instead of the three of them getting the heck out of there! It was just an inappropriate place for an info dump. The dialogue is very clunky and not the way that people speak for the most part. It is far too wordy and trying to be clever. The writing was strange and it lacked cohesion and a natural flow. It was also pretty dull. We get a lot of inane details about things like making breakfast but get nothing about the dangerous trip home with Reagan. Nothing of any interest is really happening until we follow the Rangers and even that is ruined by Reagan having a meltdown. I just didn't enjoy anything much about this and quickly DNFed it.
I absolutely love Reagan, she is a great heroine. She reminds me much of myself personality wise. The characters are well developed. The editing in the book is excellent. The plot is relevant and keeps you hinged on the edge of your seat. Looking forward to reading each and every book in this series.
