About the author

Ohrwalder was a Roman Catholic priest, who was taken captive by the Mahdists in Sudan while working as a missionary there and escaped ten years later. The German manuscript of his travels was rendered into English by Francis Reginald Wingate from a sketchy translation. Wingate had helped him escape from Sudan.

فى كتب التاريخ المقرره فى المدارس السودانيه ...هناك تلقين ممنهج بأن المهدى هو البطل القومى وبأنه المنقذ للسودان من الاستعمار التركى ....وان المهدى عمل على توحيد السودان وتوحيد قبائله ....

هذا ما لقنوه لنا فى المدارس وما زال هذا التلقين ممارس حتى هذه اللحظه ...

من لايقرأ عن المهدى سيظل فى هذا الوهم ..وهم قدسيه المهدى ...وقدسيه حربه التى اعلنها على الاتراك....

فى هذا الكتاب والذى هو عباره عن مذكرات سردت من قبل الراهب جوزيف اورفالدر الذى شاء حظه السئ ان يقع تحت اسر المهدى لعشر سنوات كامله ,,,,

فى بادئ الامر يحكى لنا جوزيف عن الاوضاع فى السودان قبل نهوض المهدى ونهوض ثورته , ويحكى لنا عن الاوضاع العسكريه فى تلك الآونه ..ومن ثم وقوعه فى الأسر هو ومجموعه من الرهبان والراهبات ....

فى الكتاب شئ من الانحياز فى بعض الصفحات ..وربما هذا يقلل من مصداقيه الكتاب الى حد ما ...

ولكن هناك الكثير من المصداقيه فى عموم الكتاب ,,,

الشئ المؤسف الذى يحسب على المهدى هو انه ادعىّ بانه المهدى المنتظر وهذا بلا شك ادعاء باطل وكاذب ,,,وهو بهذا الادعاء يستغل جهل الناس الذين من حوله وينصب نفسه وكأنه نبى ...
وهنا اتذكر بأن اهلنا فى السودان يحلفون بالمهدى ..وفى مره ذهلت عندما انكرت أمراه موت المهدى وقالت "المهدى حى ما بموت!!!"

والشئ الآخر الذى يحسب عليهم "المهديين" هو قتل الاسرى وهذا حرام فى شرع الاسلام فالاسير لايقتل ...وايضاَ ارغامهم للنصارى بالدخول فى الاسلام غصبا واكراهاَ وسبحانه وتعالى قال "لا اكراه فى الدين " لقد اتت المهديه بافكار دينيه متطرفه ومتعصبه بشكل نافر ...هذا ناهيك عن اشكال العقوبات الصارمه التى كانت تنزل باى مخالف لمعتقداتهم ....

وخوفهم الغريب من المتعلمين خصوصا من انكرو للمهدى مهديته ,,,فامثال هؤلاء يهددون فكرهم ولذا تنزل عليهم عقوبات الشنق ,,لجرأتهم على الاعتراض ..وتحرق الكتب الدينيه لانها قادره على فضحهم ...

الكتاب فى عمومه جميل غير انه فيه شئ من الانحياز فى بعض الاحيان ,,ولكن فى عمومه لديه ملاحظات دقيقه ويمكن الاعتماد على معلوماتها ...

An excellent read. First hand account on what's it like to live under a religious despot. Religion and government don't mix. Secularism must prevail!
