In the near future, a great earthquake triggered a world wide lava storm, destroying over half of the trees on Earth. Action, drama, and apocalyptic adventure flow from twenty-three short stories where the theme is My Brother's Keeper, written by twenty-three talented authors. Characters find out if life will ever be the same.
"Cindy Sailor and the Hunt for Owen" is a science fiction mystery novella. Feeling anxious, Cindy attends a race with her friend, Stella. They witness a crime, illegal teleportation. Cindy must find a way to help stop the criminal and save the world.
"Writers 750 Emerald Workbook" will help writers develop twelve new stories in one year. The workbook provides ten new conflicts to explore each month. Themes include the following: courage, greed, acceptance, optimism, corruption, atmosphere, curiosity, disguises, inheritance, deception, suspense, and compassion.
"Gryffon Master" is Schuldt's award winning fantasy jungle adventure, a novella released in December of 2013. The main character is Ragnar the Viking warrior. Ragnar and Ahmed the Arab soldier fight against the evil Lich King and Barrel the terrible dragon. It's an epic story where Ragnar must find a way to protect innocent creatures and escape a dangerous jungle.
Schuldt has several short stories in the Giant Tales anthologies where she compiled and published the Giant Tales collection with over fifty authors.
Schuldt is pleased to present a historical fiction, "Virgin Birth," a short story available in Stephanie Baskerville's anthology, The Power of Forgiveness.
This is an anthology of short stories on a theme. I didn't know any of the authors' names before getting the book, but the idea interested me. Each of them was to write a story that had something to do with lava.
Usually these unknown author projects come out sort of meh, but the writing quality overall on this one is above average. There was only one story towards the end that disappointed. Naturally I liked some stories better than others and some writing styles more than others, but someone else might like totally different ones best because of individual taste.
The point is, it's literate, well edited, and the imagination of some of the writers is noteworthy. I took my time reading one story at a time between longer reads and the theme became almost like an old friend. I would start a new story and immediately remember the feelings from the others in the anthology, so that gave it a kind of continuity.
I found the diversity of ideas of how to write about lava interesting and would recommend this collection for anyone who wants to have some short stories handy for those short reads between other things.
As a self-published author, I'm a firm believer in giving new authors a chance. This book allowed me to read short stories from 23 new authors and experience talent I didn't know was out there.
Every one of these short apocalyptic stories had their own style and their own premise, all while keeping to the basic theme 'My brother's keeper'.
Reading through many of the stories I felt remorse for lives lost, anger and hatred as the truly ugly human nature came out in some of the characters, and joy when survival and hope of a better life seemed possible. The characters come to life as you read and although you don't get to spend much time with them each of the authors were able to develop their stories in a way that gives the reader closer, not something that is always easy to do with a short story.
This was a wonderful collection of short stories and I am excited to read more by this talented group.
Tales from 23 authors about apocalyptic earthquakes and spewing volcanoes in the neighborhoods. Once you think that all hope is gone, life proves to go on with a promise of a new future. Some of these stories reveal what would happen to people in desperate times: will they help their neighbor, or will they steal and murder? Great for those little snatches of reading before bedtime or a lunch break. I am proud to have contributed to this anthology with my short story Flight of Hope; a story of a couple who fly to Seattle, Washington only to witness an earthquake and eruption of Mount Rainier.
I loved the concept at the core of Lava Storm almost as much as the creativity displayed by this anthology’s twenty-three authors. Though the authors were given the same parameters there is a little something for every reader. Be prepared, however, for an abundance of destruction by worldwide earthquakes and volcanic eruptions—and then, the man-made destruction and human triumph that follows.
Some of the stories require the reader to determine meanings and final outcomes that are only inferred. Some stories are more entertaining and written with a higher level of expertise (in my opinion) than others. I loved author H.M. Schuldt’s use of subtle foreshadowing in Dragonship; the way Mike Boggia, in My Brother’s Keeper?, ended with a message of kindness and doing what’s right; Robert Tozer’s connection to Tom Sawyer in the Adventures of Sawyer Thomas; and, in The Wild Remains, Amos Parker’s twist that focuses on wolves.
When I first began to read this collection, I did not expect to read every story, but I did read them all. I found them addicting. I want to experience the next author’s writing style and how they were able to tell their tale. If you enjoy short stories or apocalyptic themes, don’t miss this anthology.
This book is the next addition in a growing collection of short story anthologies from Prof Limn Books. Though some of the authors do have their own works published, most of them are up and coming authors. The authors bring a fresh approach to short stories and their talent is nothing short of amazing.
This particular book focused on world wide disaster. Thou the stories deal with mass destruction many of them offer hope for humanity. This book is a must add to any short story collection. Be sure to check out the entire Professor Limn collection.
Short stories written by different authors about what would life be like if or when the volcanoes around the world exploded. How would people survive? What, if any, animal or plant life survive? Each author had to incorporate the act of brotherly love in his/her story. I found it quite interesting to see the similarities and differences in the authors’ interpretations. In the epilogue each author revealed some of their own life experiences influenced their stories. This book was a special treat to read and I commend the efforts given.
Tales with the theme My Brother’s Keeper written by twenty plus authors, of which I am one. Each story includes lava, wildlife, and a bully. Amazing that even though they contain the same elements each is so different. I thought the writing might not keep me engaged throughout, but the last story is my favorite.
