Start your review of The Last Kings of Thule: With the Polar Eskimos, as They Face Their Destiny

The anthropological insights of this text are very interesting and presented in a scholarly yet accessible manner. The decision to blend that academic work with the author's autobiographical writings, however, made the book a bit too longwinded. I understand that an earlier version of The Last Kings of Thule was nearly half the length; my suggestion would be to seek out that first text for a more concise treatment.

A compelling, incisive and above-all thorough look at the Inuk of Northern Greenland. Very french and very entertaining. Worth a read as an adventure tale, as an ethnographic study, as an indictment of cold war imperialism, as a study on the interactions of modern capitalism with an archaic hunter society.

Excellent livre, documentaire, exploration, réflexion!
Bien plus qu’un simple livre, l’écrivain ethnologue et géomorphologue nous emmène dans son aventure de la connaissance des Inuits, leur histoire, culture, traditions, spiritualité et leur complexité.
La fin du livre est une véritable réflexion sur les enjeux de la préservation des peuples indigènes et de l’environnement.

Majestueux. A lire absolument!

In 1950, Malaurie, a French geographer/ethnographer, spent a year living with the most northern people on Earth - the Inughuit - while he mapped the northern reaches of Greenland and recorded their disappearing lifestyle. From hunting techniques and remarkable ice sea crossings to Canada, to consensual partner swapping to stay sane through the interminably long, dark winters, it is the irrepressible personalities of the Eskimos that really shine in this memorable book.
