"The Bell" by Iris Murdoch was first published in 1958. It was the author's fourth published novel. The story of the novel is set in Imber Court. It happens to be a lay religious community that is located next to an enclosed order of Benedictine nuns in Gloucestershire. The first chapter of the novel introduces Paul and Dora Greenfield, Toby Gashe, and James Tayper Pace. A train ride from London to Gloucestershire also takes place in the first chapter.
