I live within an hour of Jacksboro and it was amazing to see the history of this sleepy town and fort connected to it come alive with the words of the author. I would put this book on par with Empire of the Summer Moon, though this might have more precedence to me due to the fact that the focus is in my backyard and the author was born and raised in Jacksboro…so not only would he have extensive prior knowledge of the fort and the role it played, but his book had to be exquisite for the people back home to buy-in to it. Easy 5 stars for a fascinating book.
I found this book in the visitor center after visiting the park and touring the fort. The book, published in 1988 by TCU Press, is a well-researched, well-written narrative history of one of US's largest forts at the time, established in 1866 near Jacksboro, Texas, as a military outpost to protect the expanding western US settlement and to conduct the government's campaigns against the Plains Indians.
