Short-form romance is difficult to pull off. There isn't enough time for either the characters' relationship to develop, or for the reader to come to care about them. This story was nice, but nice like hearing good news about someone you don't really know. You know, like when your friend tells you that her sister, whom you haven't met or maybe were introduced to once, is getting married. "Oh, good for her!" But it doesn't make much difference to you personally.

Also, saw the "twist" coming from t

When I first got my Kindle, I became a little *too* enthusiastic. In what I call "the year of poor decisions," I eagerly acquired nearly every free romance from the Kindle Store that looked halfway interesting for about a year. Now I have hundreds of books on my Kindle, and my app is mad at me. It's time for some spring cleaning.

A cute, lovely and partly epistolary romantic story of a couple who falls in love at first sight, but can't do anything about it at the time. Honestly, there wasn't that much to get into. However, if one of the future main characters is the stepson, I'm definitely interested.

I'll probably check out the rest of this series.

Well that was short.

3.5 stars. A sweet short story - too short to be called a novella, really. It started well and I liked both MCs. It could have been developed a bit more, I thought, but still, it was an enjoyable but quick read.

This is a lead-in to the Fitzhugh trilogy, which I will tackle next.

This story's great flaw is its length. It's a tease, leaving the reader wanting more. (I always want more whatever I read by Ms. Thomas.) I loved the letters in it--though not as funny as those in Eloisa James's marvelous Three Weeks with Madame X--they advance the plot nicely and, in the way of very good writing, show not tell the hearts of the protagonists.

Ms. Thomas has a full length novel coming out in the fall. I shall have to wait, eager for more.

Awww....this was sweet. I've never read Sherry Thomas before, but I'll be starting now! This was a very short story that I read in one sitting, but despite its short length, it was still a satisfying read. There was no crazy misunderstanding, no needless angst, just a sweet story of two lonely souls finding each other. A nice way to end a day!

I've seen TV ads that were longer than this book. I've also never read Sherry Thomas before and this a bad place to start. It's not good, but it could hardly have been better for all its four bloody chapters.

An unhappily married woman named Clarissa who's associated with flowers (sound familiar?) sees Mr Kingston once and is struck with the dart; the next day she gets a letter from a random woman and they strike up a friendship. Then her husband dies and a couple of years later she has a party

So this is a short story and a pretty short short story. (And it ends at 53% on my Kindle.) You should be able to get it for free at the ebook retailer of your choice.

If you like Sherry Thomas, you'll probably like this. It's okay if you don't have any idea how it relates to the Fitzhugh trilogy (I didn't) or if you know exactly how it will turn out based on the synopsis (I did).

But if you haven't read her, this probably isn't where to start. It's too short and they kind of glossed over some imp

This was the best shortest story I've ever read. It was sweet, romantic and endearing. My only complaint is that it wasn't longer, but on the other hand that's also what makes it unique. It was perfect in its simplicity.

Clarissa, Duchess of Lexington, meets Mr. James Kingston and develops a raging infatuation. She also has a penpal named Miss Julia Kirkland who is her bff. After she's widowed and out of mourning, she invites them both to a house party, hoping to find herself another husband.

1. My synopsis is nearly as long as this short story!! (OK, it's not, but for serious this thing is brief.)

2. I think I needed a little bit more to make this story actually...come alive? It's all so brusque and rushed: ther

It's a sweet story, but entirely too short. I really wanted to get to know Mr. Kingston, and that, obviously, didn't happen. It was also rather predictable. Still, it was sweet.

TOO SHORT. It should have been a bit longer so the whole plot didn't feel as rushed.

Excellent idea but very short! I think the author should have doubled the number of pages to flesh things out.

I love the plot of this story. The only pity is that it is so very short.
Clarissa’s husband has many mistresses, does not treat her or her step son nicely and managed to kill all the love she had for him when they married.
In a house party she meets Mr. Kingston, a nice younger man that defends her in one occasion but does not pay her any other attention.
After the party everybody leaves and she stays behind alone and vulnerable and ends up striking a pen pal friendship with a woman that had visit

With only 6,500 words, this short story definitely left me wanting more. It's short, sweet, and there's a nice little twist that I somehow did not see coming. Makes me want to read the rest of the series.

This is perfectly fine, but it's also too slight to be really effective.

I'm not even rating this. It was sweet, but not even a novella.

Good

I found this a good book. A story of unrequited love and a correspondence between 2 people who require friendship

A teeny tiny short story from Sherry Thomas :) She is a lovely writer and I enjoyed the premise and did not immediately catch on the identities of two very important new people that come into a lonely and neglected woman's life. The last quarter is underdeveloped, but it was overall a quick and a fun read.

A sweet short story about Clarissa, a neglected duchess, and Mr. Kingston, the man she falls in love with and (view spoiler).

Short but engaging, this story also introduces Christian, the hero of the first book in the series, Beguiling the Beauty.

Trapped in a loveless marriage, Clarissa is intrigued by her husbands's cousin Mr. Kingston. With little social contact, Clarissa treasures her letters from a pen pal Miss Kirkland. After the death and mourning of her husband she finally gets the opportunity to invite friends to a party--but who shows up may surprise her.
I think my review just got to be longer than the actual novella. It was really short, but sweet. There wasn't much of a mystery-I had it pegged early on. It was a cute and easy

It's free and it's short and it's Sherry Thomas. Why not read it, right?
It does about as well as something so short can do.

But since this available without cost, perhaps a better question to consider is whether this short piece is enough to show how good Sherry Thomas can be (e.g. for someone who hasn't read the author before).
I think so; but it would also need such a reader to make estimates as to how good the writing when it's given more volume.

Thanks Sherry Thomas! :-)
