This book was not what I was expecting- I thought I was reading the book which the movie "Children of Men" was based on but actually this book was published in 1903 and is about Jewish immigrants to New York during that time. It is a fictional book of short stories, most of which are about sweatshop workers and the interactions between Jewish immigrants and the Christians that lived in that area. A lot of the stories are very sad, but a lot are also humorous, and it was a very quick read. The writing was very good, aside from one story written in Yiddish-accent dialogue which was really difficult to get through even though it was very funny.
The book was very illustrative of the lives of Jewish immigrants at the time so it would be perfect for a history class which dealt with New York sweatshops at the turn of the century. It was overall a very pleasant book and I'm surprised it's not more popular.
