There’s nothing quite like a night with one of the Gentlemen of the Emerald City. No strings. No complications. I’ve been burned by love, and I’m not going there again.
Unlike my teammates who fell for their Gentlemen, I know how to keep emotions from coming into play.
At least… I used to.
Andre
I used to love this job. The money doesn’t matter—just the thrill. But that thrill is gone now.
That is, until I meet Matt. And that’s before he starts looking at me like that. And booking me more often. And making my heart do things it’s not supposed to do when I’m on the clock.
How do I convince a jaded man that love is worth another try?
Gentlemen of the Emerald City
Andre is Book 5 of Gentlemen of the Emerald City, a sexy series centered around the high class, high-dollar Gentlemen of Seattle’s most exclusive escort service. Each book is full of snark, sass, and sweetness, and like any Emerald City client, you’re guaranteed a happy ending.
L.A. Witt and her husband have been exiled from Spain and sent to live in Maine because rhymes are fun. She now divides her time between writing, assuring people she is aware that Maine is cold, wondering where to put her next tattoo, and trying to reason with a surly Maine coon. Rumor has it her arch nemesis, Lauren Gallagher, is also somewhere in the wilds of New England, which is why L.A. is also spending a portion of her time training a team of spec ops lobsters.
Authors Ann Gallagher and Lori A. Witt have been asked to assist in lobster training, but they "have books to write" and "need to focus on our careers" and "don't you think this rivalry has gotten a little out of hand?" They're probably just helping Lauren raise her army of squirrels trained to ride moose into battle.
Both Matt and Andre were sweet, likable guys. Andre was a up and coming artist with a plan for his life and it doesn't involve working as an escort although he has to admit that the money is good, and he finds the job to be fun. We have met Andre in Marco’s book and saw how terrible he was treated by Tony on the cruise to Hawaii, so it was nice to see that he was trying hard to put that part of his life behind him. Andre met Matt a hockey player on the Beakers, a Seattle hockey team, while Matt was off the schedule with a shoulder injury. It was supposed to be "business as usual" but as we known with other books in this series, it soon turns into "more than just a job". L A Witt is so good at bringing to life these two characters. Both Matt and Andre explore some intense emotional baggage and happily soon come to terms with the results. I really thought that there was going to be some major over-the-top angst, but the author keeps the story interesting and moving forward without putting Matt and Andre through the wringer. The 6th and last book in the series is nicely sets up also. That one will feature Scott, the guy that has given the other players so much grief and torment while refusing to recognize that he shares the same lifestyle as the other four players on his team. Can't wait to see how Scott handles that.
Considering Matt’s recommendation of a certain app to Ethan in the first book is the inciting incident of this series, I’ve been looking forward to his happily ever after. He was a solid secondary character in the previous two hockey romances of this set, and while he seems sorted on the surface, I knew Witt would give him a solid background that made his story worth reading. I also knew that I needed more of Andre after meeting him in the train wreck fake-relationship scenario explored in Marco’s book. I was not disappointed on either account.
Matt was seriously burned by two relationships early in his life (college-age). Since he has the financial means to do so, he’s limited his physical connections to the options available via the Gentlemen of Emerald City app for years. Is this healthy? Not necessarily, but it’s obvious that Matt is an incredible catch due to his knowledge and respect of sex workers and the appropriate inherent boundaries. Witt also explores how Andre became involved in the profession, and I thoroughly enjoyed the secondary conflict of Andre’s changing perspective after the previous book’s events. The sparks are immediate between both men, both physically and mentally, so it’s fairly inevitable that they get themselves into an “idiots in love” situation, especially once they are “exclusive” for a decent length of time.
This book is my favorite of the series so far. Witt brings to life two dynamic characters who explore some intense emotional baggage and come to terms with the resulting development. This seems like a recipe for some pretty epic angst, but Witt keeps the story compelling without diving into too much unnecessary pain for Matt and Andre. She also sets up the final book in the series, which I’m excited to learn features a sort of “antagonist” from many of these books. Because as Matt has proven, even idiots deserve their own love stories.
Andre works as an escort, but after a bad experience, he was thinking of quitting this side gig. Then he’s hired by Matt, who ends up being a solicitous, kind & good looking, who makes him rethink leaving the escort business.
While Andre tries to get over his bad experience in from last year, Matt is also trying to deal with some negative events that happened in his past. Payments for Andre’s services continue, though, which makes it clear that their relationship should stay a professional one, totally above board.
Right?
But what happens when they both start to feel more than they’re supposed to feel for one another?
What happens then?
This was another great story in this series. I loved seeing some of the earlier people from the other Emerald City books. It hit all the right goals - uh, spots, that is.
I feel like each time I rate one of the books in this series I say the same thing I love the book and the series. Andre who we met in the last book the one who had to put up with Tony the asshole on the cruise is still having problems with going back to Emerald City but then enters Matt (Smitty) a team mate of the previous hockey players and he has been messed up in the past and never ever going to do relationships again. I just love Andre and Matt and their hot, sexy relationship. Their story line was excellent and I really loved the peek into the other guys we have seen before and the surprise one of them gives us in the story. I loved hearing about hockey, art and everything else these two did for fun.
Andre was still getting over the client from hell. He had spent two weeks with a obnoxious client who thought he was God's gift to men. He was afraid he'd run into someone like him or worse. Matt had experience two bad relationships in his life and he had sworn off relationships. He loved the men of Emerald because he didn't have to commit. Andre decided to give it one more try and he got Matt. At the beginning both wanted the same thing, however Andre fell hard, but Matt was willing to walk away. I loved their story.
Matt has had his heart broken one too many times. Andre' had horrible luck with his last client but decides to try again. When they meet up, they hit it off, while Matt is recovering. Unfortunately Matt still has to deal with the first guy who broke his heart, a fellow team member. Matt's arm heals, but not his heart. Can he move on so he can win Andre's?
It's a good book, with an instant attraction relationship. As always the characters have depth and Matt actually has a life outside of being an athlete.
Written in dual first person POV. Good amount of M/M sexy times. Both MCs were good guys and I appreciated that Andre had a plan for his future. Andre is an up-and-coming artist and works for EC for fun. We met him in the previous book but this could be read as a standalone. The next book focuses on Scott and I’m not sure if I can get past how crappy he’s been in all of the books. So this book could end the series if you don’t want to continue.
I have been waiting for Smitty's book since the beginning and it didn't disappoint. He is an interesting character, choosing to be with escorts exclusively because of past heartbreak. Andre is coming off a disasterous extended contract with a date that's left him uncertain of his future with Emerald City. When they come together, it's wonderful. Is it predictable? Of course, but it's still hot, fun, and sexy.
I was so glad that we got to see Smitty. I have loved the whole series and really appreciate the way they have shown hockey players as human. Smitty was a great back ground character in the first two books and I am so glad that we get to hear his story. I am excited to read Hunter and see if Smitty and Deacon and make it back to at least friends and teammates and not adversaries on the same team.😀😀😀
I love this series!!!! But this book was serious drama - angst - snark - sass I was inclined to give Scotty a slap and then a piece of my mind!!! Butttt he did get his head out of the sand - these guys are serious heartthrobs I have a a big drowl stain on my pillow!!!!! Thank you thank you so Mich - Lori
Ah, Smitty's (Matt) story, fimally. After the first 2 books of the series, I was beginning to think Smitty had some stock (or was part owner) of the Gentlemen's club, but no, he just really enjoyed his time there. Another solid story. Happy to get a lot more insight into Matt.
I loved this journey to love with two very open men who give each other what they need and fall in love along the way. The narration by Michael Ferrauiolo is beyond compare - as usual.
Pro Hockey Player Matt “Smitty” hires Artist/Escort Andre for an uncomplicated distraction while his broken arm heals leads to so much more. This tale seems like an extension of the previous book “Marco” because of so many references to that storyline. I also thought Andre was a bit of a drama queen over the ‘Tony disaster’ as unpleasant as it was; also the overall premise was a little weak and the connection between MCs was a bit tenuous. Although, I really liked Matt’s character from the very beginning starting in book 1 ‘Lucas’. This was an averagely good enough read.
8/24 reread ______ This was much better than the dumpster fire of the last book. You could understand where the conflict came from, the characters had a full history, and resolution came knowing that background. Just a better book all in all.
On a different note, this was written before in real life NHL banned Pride warm up jerseys and rainbow tape. You could envision a time when there were multiple queer players in the NHL, out and proud. It was a fantasy, but the arc of progress made it seem like an attainable fantasy. But that's gone for now. And that's just fucking sad.
I cannot believe half this book was once again dedicated to bemoaning Tony and the other half to fucking Scott. But at least it felt like the plot was moving a lot better this time!
