Estranged from his family, prizefighter Barney Winslow buries his bitterness in drink, women, and the prize ring, but when his drinking becomes uncontrollable, Barney must find a way to come to terms with himself and undo the harm he has inflicted on saloon girl Katie Sullivan
Gilbert Morris was one of today's best-known Christian novelists. He lived in Gulf Shores, Alabama, with his wife, Johnnie. He is the father to Lynn Morris and Alan Morris
This may be the best yet in the series by Gilbert Morris. The House of Winslow continues to the dawn of the twentieth century. The plot is perhaps the most creative. The cast of characters is compelling, and the plot doesn’t come across as contrived. The book is fast-paced and full of adventure. While still adopting most of the ordinary formula for the series, The Final Adversary manages to plot an unpredictable path. I was engaged in the story from start to finish!
I was quite disappointed in this book. The author didn't seem to do his homework regarding what mission work was like to the darkest tribes in Africa in the 19th century. Much of it was simply unbelievable. I get so frustrated when a story loses it's ability to remain believable.
I have read and re-read some of this series. This was just as expected a good enjoyable read. The author correctly writes about the different mission visions of missionaries. Also the huge step of faith to move from the coast into the interior of Africa
The Final Adversary, part of The House of Winslow series, is another great book true to the entire series. Barney Winslow opens the book in bad shape and out of sorts with his family. With the help of great friend and some Divine intervention, he finds himself in Africa as a missionary with a group of people committed to their cause & each other. It's s great book that will take you on an incredible journey across several continents, overcoming enormous odds but in the end fulfilling his mission to spread the Gospel.
This was hard to put down, & there are other things I need to do! Barney Winslow is Mark Winslow's oldest son. He doesn't feel appreciated by his family, and becomes a boxer, where he finally feels accepted for something he can do. However, at one point he gets drunk & is found outside a jewelry store that's been robbed with the gun that was used to murder the owner in his lap!
This series by Gilbert Morris is one of my absolute favorites. Each book follows at least one member of a generation in the Winslow family tree and the member(s) gets saved and finds true love. There's also some commentary on the social conditions of the time frame. Truly interesting.
I liked this story. It is a continuation of the of the Winslow family from 1894-1900. Barney and Katie go to Liberia as missionaries to the tribes there.
