3.5 - Not Your Average Historical Fiction Stars!

I am not a huge reader of historical fiction, I pretty much left the genre behind when I graduated from the Mills & Boon training school of Romance... I do however like a good story, so never say never!

That is why you find me in the polite society of 1811, enjoying Charlotte Lightwood's Debutante Season with her. What struck me the most about this book is that although it is 100% Historical fiction, there are a few modern twists thrown in that mak

Light and sweet, Just a Kiss was an enjoyable historical romance novella. I liked this quick read. It was a sweet novella.

Sebastian and Charlotte were both great. Charlotte was determined not to let her sister-in-law take control of her life and was strong enough to follow through. Sebastian was sweet, though a bit oblivious to what was right in front of him. But, still adorable. I liked both characters.

The romance was good. It took a while to actually progress, though, so that slowed down the b

I love it when an awesome piece of writing falls into my lap.

I adored this story. It was simply...

It was full of wit and humor, with those tiny bits of dry sarcasm that only the English gentry can truly convey with accuracy. It was a truly delicious read. I love when writing is flawless and grammatically correct. The twist of words got me excited to read further. I've always been a fan of historical romantic fiction and I love when it comes together so eloquently. And there was a touch of so

Just a Kiss is a novella in the It’s in His Kiss series and looks like a fantastic start. At just over 100 pages, the two do fall in love pretty quickly but that’s what you expect in a novella but, an important thing for me, I didn’t feel cheated by the length of the story. Broadfield gives her readers a complete, and amazingly sweet, story in just about 100 pages.

This is a fun little ditty. Charlotte is being pressured into marrying an odious wart hog who is only wanting an annuity annually in return to fix up his small estate. She has been promised by her half brother that she will get at least one season but it is his wife Elizabeth who is trying to force the marriage to her cousin.

The Earl of Marley otherwise known as Sebastian Wilkinson has put off marrying himself for far too long and at the request of his frail grandmother has agreed that he will s

“Just A Kiss”
By Ally Broadfield

Charlotte Lightfoot is in a real predicament. She has no dowry and no title. She is forced to live with her married brother and his family – and his wife doesn’t want her there, but cannot go against her husband and refuse his sister a home. Her eldest niece Amelia is very happy that her Aunt Charlotte lives with them. Elizabeth, her sister-in-law decides to try to get Charlotte out of the house through marriage – and is foisting her unmarried cousin, Horace, on he

This was an enjoyable and sweet historical. Being that it's a novella, it's just over a hundred pages only. I will admit the first 20% of the book was good, but slow. I found my dislike for the sister-in-law and horrid Horace straight off the bat. I loved Charlotte, even though she didn't have much she was determined not to marry Horace despite her sister-in-law’s insistence. She won even more marks from me when she punched him in the eye for pinching her bum. Then going over
Just a Kiss is a short, cute, historical romance that will appeal to those how like a "Cinderella" plot line. Charlotte Lightwood has been given one season to find a husband; otherwise she will have to marry her sister-in-law’s lecherous cousin. At her first ball, Charlotte finds herself introduced to Sebastian, the Earl of Marley, and considered to be the catch of the season. Sebastian’s grandmother’s heath has been declining and he’s promised her that he will look for a bride this season, so h ...more

Just a Kiss is the debut of this author and I enjoyed this light and sweet read. This is historical romance is thrown with a few twists that made this book stand out to me. Just a Kiss by Ally Broadfield was a quick read and was a nice little story. If you like historical romance and want to read something that will have you rooting for the heroine, definitely check this one out.

Charlotte Lightwood has been living with her half-brother and sister-in-law for a while now and she knows her sister-in-law, Elizabeth, isn’t happy about having her still around. Part of Elizabeth’s plan to get her out of her household it to marry Charlotte off to her cousin, Horace. Unfort

Just A Kiss by Ally Broadfield is the first novella in the new series, It's In His Kiss. The story centers aroud Charlotte Lightwood. She has one season to find a husband, or she'll be forced to marry the cousin of her guardian. And he's a really loathsome choice. Think Mr. Collins from Pride and Prejudice but more skeevy. So she embarks on her journey to find a husband, but she's at a sheer disadvantage. She's virtually penniless with not much to recommend her. Though she is a beauty. She catch ...more

Fun read with cute characters. Really enjoyed this.
Just a Kiss is a very cute story. The premise is one of my favorites – clever young woman with no dowry has to find a match before being stuck for the rest of her life with an odious acquaintance. In this case, Charlotte is being pressured to marry the cousin of her sister-in-law. Both the sister-in-law and the cousin are horrible, selfish people, so it’s a good thing that Charlotte has a backbone and stands up to them. They keep plottin

This was a quick read that I really enjoyed. From the first page I was curious about the characters. Charlotte the heroine was instantly a favorite. She was a strong young woman of her era, not just a wallflower or a quiet mouse, she tended to do and speak her mind. But she did it all with style and the occasional spark of humor.

The hero of the story is Sebastian. Just the name does it for me. I can easily picture a noble gentlemen who loves and dotes on his grandmother, but at the same time as

After Charlotte Lightwood's parents died she was put in her brother's household and she never felt welcome. She's been promised one season and she has to find someone that will marry her. Anyone can see how this story ends

Had there been just a bit more danger, illicit lust, overwhelming anger...or maybe if the horrible Horace had been more horrid...then this book would get more stars. As it was, the tension that usually builds in a romance of this type NEVER appeared. The hero tends mildly to his grandmother, who obviously adores him. To me, there was never any question that he could bring home any remotely acceptable female and she would be delighted. As a villainess, Elizabeth

Just a Kiss by author Ally Broadfield was such a delight to read! I haven't been a fan of historical romances due to my feminist views, but this book may have converted me into liking historical romances.

Charlotte finds herself in an unfoturnate situation. When her father died she was left in the care of her brother and sister-in-law who don't seem to particularly care to have her around. Her sister-in-laws solution is to force her hand and make her marry a very gross and horrid man. Charlotte would do just about anything to stop this from happening, so when Sebastian takes her under his wing (so to speak) and offers to help her find other suitors, she hopes that he can help.

Or course, this bei

My Thoughts:

Muahaha! I love the "Let's pretend to be courting so that people will think things" that ends up leading to some mixed emotions. I remember when I started the story, I was like, "Must see where this goes." And I liked where it went.

Charlotte and Sebastian think they're just helping each other out, but it becomes so much more. It's almost like there needs to be a disclaimer when people do this: Never kiss. Because the se

I was pleasantly surprised with Just A Kiss. It was a nice, quick read and gave you all you needed, even if it was a short novella.

It's about Charlotte who is looking for a husband, but with no dowry and her connections, she really isn't that desirable. And Sebastian, who is considered the catch of the season. They agree to help each other by her, getting some inside info on her friend, a princess, and him, by pretending interest on her to attract other suitors thereby increasing her chances of

Charlotte has only one season to find a husband or she will be forced to marry her sister-in-law's cousin, while Sebastian needs to marry to please his ailing grandmother. They decide to work together, each helping the other find a spouse. Of course that plan backfires and they end up betrothed to each other.

This is a novella, with all the action of a full length novel. To achieve that Ally Broadfield had to speed up a lot of the relationship building. The story begins slowly as we're introduced

I didn’t know what to expect when starting Ms. Broadfield’s Just a Kiss, but I was pleasantly surprised as I got underway. I quickly lost track of time as the world of Catherine and Sebastian entranced me.

Catherine, a Cinderella character, lives under the control of her “evil” sister-in-law who will do anything to marry her off and get her out of the house. Our “prince” is the Earl of Marley, given the task to find a bride before his elderly grandmother’s demise. The cast of character’s interact

“Charlotte raised her eyebrows. “Have you spent any time with her this week?”

“I’m afraid she’s too…perfectish.”

She stopped and turned toward him. “Perfectish?”

He lowered his head and gazed into her eyes. “Yes, perfectish. It’s a clear indication that some horrible fault will come to the surface the moment you’ve irrevocably declared your intentions.”

She allowed one corner of her mouth to curve upward. “Well, then. I guess it’s a good thing I could never be considered perfectish.”

His eyes darkened as he leaned closer. “No, you are certainly not too perfectish.”
