SHIT, THAT WAS REALLY GOOD.

i won't write my usual long arse review since i'm traveling and didn't bring my laptop with me (and let's be furreal, typing long shit on a phone is just annoying af) so i'll be super brief. or try to anyways.

i was soooo not looking forward to this volume because his holy dickface asshole from book 1, touya, plays the leading role here. but after reading the reviews, i ended up looking forward to this like i look forward to chicken wangs because of the angst that awaited me. HOWEVER, it actually wasn't as angsty as i had anticipated... for the most part. but anyways, quick summary:

iku is the uke, and a low class type. his bug origin is the silkworm moth, which was domesticated by humans for their silk back when they were silkworms. as they were altered to become silkworm moths, they became incredibly weak, more so than regular low class types. i thiiiink it was about 1/100,000 that are born as this type, though they shouldn't even be born in the first place. their lifespan is short, they lose their ability to speak at a very young age, they are hella sensitive to cold and hot weather, they get sick easily, and if they end up breaking - let's say - a leg, they won't be able to heal and would face not being able to walk again. iku's mom, also a low class but of a different bug origin, remarried to a high class, wealthy, and amicable man when iku was really young. his stepdad treated iku like his very own and would spoil him like crazy. but his stepdad is also veeeery protective over iku and his poor health, which prevents iku from ever being "free". iku reminds me of tsubasa from book 1: having an overprotective arse parent, feeling unfulfilled by life, feeling alone, wanting to experience life with no regrets, wanting to be independent and active in society despite the parent's wishes, etc.

iku's happens to meet touya (high class, bug origin: brazilian whiteknee tarantula) by chance and sensed touya's loneliness and sadness. touya is broken-hearted and frustrated by losing his cousin and first love, sumiya (from book 1) to tsubasa (a low class butterfly type). his distaste for the low class deepens, and he continues to waste away his young life partying and sleeping around. nothing satisfies him since nothing can push his boredom and frustration away. so he decides to date the stubborn iku to "pass the time", and even though he's MEAN AS FUK to the poor guy in the beginning, he gradually starts to warm up and fall in love with iku...

iku doesn't want anyone to love him and be hurt because of him when he dies. he struggles on a daily basis, and he believes that the small amount of people that are constantly worried about him will end up relieved when he passes away. at the same time, he's hurt by this very thought and he doesn't want to be forgotten. in actuality, he still wants to be loved and he wants to love as well. he also wants to feel like he was born for a reason, and wants to play an active, independent role in society, despite his weak body. in contrast, touya has always gotten what he ever wanted without any struggle, he's naturally gifted, and he's incredibly healthy. however, he's frustrated with how bored and unsatisfying simply living is.

this story is about iku and touya finding their meaning in life. they learn more about themselves and their purpose in life not only by each other, but by the people around them as well.

let me just say: OMFG THE STUFF THAT HAPPENS. THE SHIT THAT IKU HAD TO GO THROUGH, AND THE PAIN AND REGRET THAT TOUYA HAS TO FACE AS HE SEEKS FOR ATONEMENT. hold me. there's one particular scene where... the scene was hard to read. shit. SHIT.

// SPOILER //

THIS HAS RAPE. the actual rape scene is not written (thank god) but iku laying on the floor with hollow eyes and blood and semen coming out from between his legs with injuries all over his body... fuck. and wait until you find out who the bastard who organized all of this is and how he relates to iku. my heart.

// END OF SPOILER //

this book is divided into 3 parts if you don't count the extra story. prologue in iku's pov, part 1 in touya's pov, 4 year time skip in part 2 in iku's pov. and then after the atogaki (afterwards) there's a 14 pg extra in touya's pov that takes place months later.

i really would love to give this a 5/5, BECAUSE SHIT, THIS WAS REALLY GOOD. i shed legit tears. some of the dialogues and scenes here were simply beautiful and heart-wrenching. i just wished the transition to ASSHOLE TOUYA to OMFG COOL AF BEST BF EVER TOUYA was smoother and detailed. i felt like the change in character was abrupt and misao probably could have written the process of touya's realization that he actually likes iku after mistreating him all this time (because he didn't know what or how to deal with these new found feelings) a bit better.

worth a huge arse mention: despite being the bad guy, atsurou is an interesting character who suffers from a drug addiction. i really hope he shows up again in the later volumes.

characters from book 1 returns in this volume, such as sumiya, tsubasa, and kabuto. sumiya's and tsubasa's kid also makes an appearance here and he's waaaaay too cute!! arizawa haruka from book 2 has his father appear as touya's boss at his law firm in this volume as well. haruka's dad is bamf, is all i'm sayin'.

definitely re-read material, and definitely a must-read!! but be sure to read book 1 before reading this volume. anyways, this ended up being a long review....... haha, knew it. until book 4!

Third volume in the Bug series, a BL novel series. The MCs this time are one of the antagonists from vol 1 and a low-class whose origin species is silkworm moth, the only truly domesticated insect in human history such that they cannot survive in the wild and the adult form is flightless and can’t eat. The uke lost his voice as he grew up and has such a weak autoimmune system that even just a minor scratch would lead to inflammation and fever, and was told by doctors that he can’t live past 30. The first 1/4 of the book kind of follows the trope of a playboy taking a fancy on an unremarkable person and falling in love for the first time. The rest of the book deals with the uke’s imminent death, like whether there’s any value of living out such a short life, the various attitudes from other people toward his fragile life, and his own resignation and fear. Needless to say, I cried so much in the latter part of the book. This book reminds me a lot of the author’s later work, 王を統べる運命の子, which also deals with the theme of short lifespan but this book gives a fuller depiction of various emotions toward it.

Damn... This was fantastic. But the kind of book I'm going to enjoy more the second time around because I know how it ends. The anxiety I felt while reading this was too much. But now that volume five was fantastic, volume one was okay and volume three even more than fantastic I will now read the other volumes right away. The order is a bit messed up but that's ok.

I'll write more details about the plot once I have more time, but for now let's just say this made me really happy.

Edit: This defintitely held up the second time I read it. Iku is a fantastic protagonist, and Touya makes a believable change from asshole to.. well, not saint, but good guy.
