This plan works! I have PCOS, so losing weight is a nightmare. In my 30s now, it's become so much more challenging. I tried Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, a low carb diet specially designed for me by the dietician at my endocrinologist's office and NOTHING. I once lost 3 pounds in a month; so depressing! Then I heard about Shred and Super Shred on The Doctors TV show. I was willing to try anything! I lost 11 pounds in 4 weeks!!! While it's not the 20 I had hoped for, it was huge for me. In fact, after a few months on Shred and down 16 more pounds, I'm going through Super Shred again. I'm so eager to see the results. Although I have 70 pounds to go, I owe the first 30 to Dr. Ian Smith.

I didn't lose 20 pounds in four weeks as suggested by the cover, but I did lose 9.3 pounds, and I didn't think I could lose weight anymore no matter what I did.

What this diet taught me: eat more often (but less at each meal/snack), consume less fat and move more. This is not earth-shattering information, but Smith presents it in a way that inspired me and kept me going through the whole month.

I'm post-menopausal, in my 50s and I exercise regularly. This diet reminded me I wasn't being as careful in my eating habits as I thought I was, and I wasn't moving as much as I really ought to be.

Biggest help for me was the plan itself. There is a lot less blah, blah, blah introduction, and a lot more detail in the eating plan that most diet books. Smith outlines what to eat and when, but flexibility abounds! A Super Shred meal might be "5 ounces chicken, turkey or fish and two vegetables." That gave me lots of options within boundaries. I've had success on the South Beach Diet decades ago now, but the prescribed meals are so weird (and expensive, frankly) I knew I couldn't pull it off now. Super Shred made it easier for me to open the fridge and find something to eat. Plus, he offers pages of healthy snack ideas which left me feeling less deprived even though I was eating a lot less cheese, red meat and sugar than I might usually. I was never hungry on this diet.

You better like fruits and vegetables if you try this approach. You'll consume a lot of fruit smoothies and healthy soups. But unlike a paleo diet, you CAN eat fruit. And unlike a keto diet, you will consume a lot less fat. Some of Smith's options are crackers, bread and pasta, which I generally avoid, but he offers so many alternatives it's easy to stick with what works for you (vegetarian, dairy-free or not a fan of beets? No problem).

I appreciated Smith's approach so much, I invested in his previous book Shred.

Straightforward -- a to-do list laid out in a bullet-point schedule that is primed to do one thing: lose weight with dietary change and activity instruction with absolutely no guesswork.

I've never picked up one of these books with so little of the author's voice intermingling in the text because there is no sideline conversation. No, you're told to eat this and do that and results will happen. Point proven by other reviews... but if you want to feel supported or reassured, pick something else for this book is nothing more than a grocery list with some nifty recipes (which is why I rated it so favorably).

Very good follow up to the first shred book. It is way more difficult, especially week 3!

Portion control is the key. This doesn't seem difficult at all, so I'm going to give it a try. Plus, it's only four weeks and it's not super restrictive. Let's roll...

I picked this up as desperate attempt to get in shape before a wedding. I did not follow the diet super closely and managed to lose about 7-8 lbs in a month. May not sound like much, but that's about 2 lbs/week, which is not an easy thing to do.

Here's what I liked:
-the diet forced me to change my portion sizes
-I was not usually hungry, because it had me eating many meals a day
-it laid out plenty of meal/snack options, so I didn't have to do much guesswork on my own
-it pushed me to find the very best options from restaurants. if I had to eat out, I made sure to substitute veggies for fries, only have one diet pop or beer, order grilled meats, etc
-I had to make time for breakfast, even if it wasn't a big one

Here's what I didn't like/why I didn't follow it super closely:
-the timing of the meal plan is very hard to follow if you work retail (or can't eat something every couple of hours).
-planning/preparing food was pretty time-consuming, which left me with less time to do the work-outs
-sometimes I didn't have the energy to do the workouts based on what I had eaten that day
-one day I started feeling faint, and realized I'd only had 1,000 calories. At that point i decided to follow the plan a little less closely and listen to my body.

Now that I'm off the diet, my stomach capacity has shrunk considerably. A normal lunch now makes me feel full the rest of the day, so I have to alter what I'm used to, portion-wise. Granted, I went a little nuts with the rehearsal dinner, wedding, etc. So I'll have to do some recon work and get in some good workouts. I will try to remember to update this review concerning what I did or didn't gain back.

Although I didn't lose the 20 pounds the book says you could lose in 4 weeks, I did lose 10 pounds in 3 weeks and I am happy with that result. The information in the book is very informative and it also includes many 100 and 150 calorie snacks along with soup and smoothie recipes.

The technique is basically carb cycling which Dr. Ian Smith explains very well in the book. Each week has different meal plans that are outlined specifically to maximize your metabolism. I will definitely do this program in the future and I will use what I learned in my everyday healthy eating lifestyle.

Dr. Ian is also on Twitter and is available for guidance. He answered my question in the first week of dieting within 2 hours. Though I didn't lose 20 pounds, I'm still happy with the 10 I did lose and I'm happy I'm back into my favorite jeans!

If you're wanting to lose some weight in a short amount of time in a healthy way, you should give Super Shred a try.

I read this on the recommendation of a colleague. There's plenty of sound advice in this book, including rounding out your meals with healthy snacks and lots of fruits and veggies, as well as tips for staying hydrated and for ensuring your workouts don't work against you. That said, I think the content wasn't for me: Dr. Smith provides a detailed meal plan you must follow for a month. I would have liked this book to include more about his diet philosophy and less menu information. I understand there is a prequel, but given my experience with this content, I doubt I'll pick it up.

I liked this book. IT is a no nonsense approach to short term quick weight loss. I you are wanting to start a diet and get positive results quick then this is the diet for you to start with. Then you should switch to a lifestyle weight loss regime.

I love the clear way that Dr Ian Smith lays out the diet plan with meal plans that you can easily customize, and great low cal snack recipes.

The foods that you eat are sensible and healthy. No processed foods. Just whole food goodness.

Very tough program!

After reading the book my only comment is Dr Ian Smith Super Shred is tough! I am using it as a great jump start program. Time will tell if it is effective. I have several issues with the program. The wake time coupled with the eating times are not easily followed if you work and have a family. I would ask that the time tables are adjusted for those who work to ensure success. Thank you.

Very easy to read, step by step instructions, real food, no gimmicks and it works! There is an explanation of each phase, a grocery list for each week/phase as well. Lists of snack suggestions are also useful. No counting calories for the most part. Sticking to the plan requires mental strength and it isn't great if you're trying to cook for a family with little kids. I am 8 lbs down and about half way through.

Yea! I made it through the whole month. I only needed to lose 15 and I lost 9. I think that this book is geared more for people that have more that 20 pounds to lose and aren't already doing much exercise. If you fit into that category, I highly recommend this book.
