As much as I enjoyed reading this book, my favorite takeaways are how the issues of rebuilding one’s life, forgiveness, and standing up apply the themes of recovery and hope in the story to give an encouraging message throughout the book. I give a 5-star rating for this reason and recommend it to therapists and anyone going through a tough time.

Reading this book feels like sitting down with a trusted friend who isn’t afraid to tell you the truth but always has your back. With a refreshingly candid writing style, Turpin dives deep into the complexities of relationships. It’s like getting advice from a life coach who’s been through it all and is ready to offer no-nonsense guidance on what makes relationships work.

One of the most engaging aspects of the book is the author’s relatable voice. It doesn’t read like a dry, academic textbook filled with jargon. Instead, it feels conversational and grounded, making even the toughest relationship challenges seem manageable. Turpin breaks down complex concepts into actionable advice, such as the importance of body language and the need for honest communication to avoid misunderstandings. This practical approach makes the book feel like a toolkit for everyday relationship struggles rather than a theoretical discussion. The balance between the highs and lows of relationships is another highlight. Turpin addresses the tough moments—wounds, betrayals, and heartbreaks—without unnecessary drama, showing how these difficult experiences can lead to profound growth. At the same time, the book celebrates the joy, laughter, and shared memories that make relationships worth the effort. This thoughtful balance reminds readers that while relationships require work, the rewards are undeniably worth it. The sections on building trust, mending after a breakup, and nurturing intimacy are particularly insightful. Rather than offering cliché advice like "just communicate more," Turpin emphasizes specific, realistic actions that foster connection. Simple gestures of kindness are given as much weight as addressing deeper issues, reinforcing the idea that small, consistent efforts can keep a relationship strong. In terms of writing style, it’s smooth sailing. The language is clear and direct, the advice is practical, and the pacing flows effortlessly. Turpin perfectly balances comforting the reader and pushing them to grow. By the end, you feel less overwhelmed and more equipped with clear steps to improve your relationships.

This book is a valuable resource for anyone seeking to strengthen their relationships with practical, no-nonsense advice. Turpin’s honest and relatable approach makes even the toughest challenges feel manageable while offering a balanced view of the partnership's struggles and joys. With clear steps and real-life applications, the book provides readers with the tools they need to foster deeper, more meaningful connections. Whether you're navigating trust issues, healing from heartbreak, or simply looking to improve communication, this book is an insightful and encouraging guide worth exploring.

Ariane S. Turpin's book "Healing from Toxic Relationships in Marriage, Dating, and Interpersonal Connections" is written to assist people in identifying, overcoming, and starting over after toxic relationships. The book starts with detecting the red signs of a toxic relationship and then moves on to understanding the fundamental causes, healing procedures, and tactics for creating healthy boundaries. Turpin's guide covers more than just sexual relationships. It also covers family ties, friendships, and even work relationships. This makes it a useful tool for anyone who wants to take back their life from toxic relationships.

I liked how Turpin skillfully uses Melissa's life to give the many ideas and pieces of advice a human face, turning it not only into an academic study but also into a touching story. Melissa's journey from realizing her falling self-worth to facing the hard truth of her situation and taking brave steps to take back her life is written with compassion and brutal honesty. This storyline keeps the reader interested and gives them something to relate to in the middle of all the information.

I disliked nothing in this book as the author's ability to blend useful advice with a heartfelt story guarantees that readers remain engaged and empowered. The book acts as a beacon of hope for anyone suffering in the tangle of toxic relationships, leading them toward a road of healing and self-empowerment. It is not just a book but a complete trip through pain, realization, and eventually, recovery. Modern readers, therapists, relationship counselors, and anyone keen on fostering healthier relational dynamics in their lives would find this book an invaluable resource. I highly recommend it.

“Healing from Toxic Relationships in Marriage, Dating, and Interpersonal Connections: Break Free by Taking Steps Toward Recovery and Rebuilding Self-Esteem, Confidence and Healthy Boundaries,” by Ariane Turpin is a comprehensive guide for those caught in a troubled relationship or haunted by past trauma. Turpin describes a toxic or abusive relationship as one in which there is not enough support, plenty of conflict, competition and disrespect. The author writes that abuse in a relationship can manifest in different ways besides physical assault: it can be verbal, emotional, or psychological. These unhealthy dynamics can occur in romantic relationships, between family members, in friendships, or even in workplace relationships. According to Turpin, the problem is prevalent; she cites these statistics: 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men experience violence and/or stalking behavior.
Turpin provides indications of toxicity: gaslighting (manipulating someone to doubt their perceptions), persistent feelings of dread, repetitive belittlement, isolations from friends/relatives, exerting financial control, and shifting goal posts (so that nothing you do is ever good enough.) The author also delves into possible effects on relationships from mental disorders, and provides steps towards healing (such as understanding wounds and acknowledging hurt & betrayals), as well as guidance for building healthy connections.

This is a heartfelt and comprehensive guide for anyone seeking to break free from harmful relationships and embark on a journey toward healing and selfdiscovery. Turpin delves into the complexities of toxic relationships across various domains— romantic partnerships, family ties, or friendships—making the book universally relatable.

Turpin doesn't just outline the tell-tale signs of toxic dynamics, she offers practical strategies to navigate and exit these challenging situations. The inclusion of personal narratives helps to humanize the concepts and allows readers to see reflections of their own experiences.

I really enjoyed the focus on self-reflection and the transformation of pain into wisdom. Turpin emphasizes the importance of practices like journaling and mindfulness, which serve as powerful tools for rebuilding self-esteem and confidence. She also tackles the often misunderstood concept of forgiveness.

While the book is rich in compassionate advice and practical tips, some readers might find it brief and wish for a more in-depth exploration of certain topics. However, its concise nature makes it an accessible starting point for those beginning their healing journey. It is a great companion that empowers readers to reclaim their lives, restore their self-worth, and build the harmonious connections they deserve.

I chose to read this book because I recently dealt with a toxic friendship. As I read through the pages, I understood the complexity of my emotions and my situation. While it is a short read, many readers can benefit from reading this book.

At the beginning of every chapter, there was a short story that followed Melissa’s journey. This was quite interesting as the specific sections of the story related to the rest of the chapter and allowed readers to connect to these situations. Apart from relating to the victim, the author encourages the reader to empathize and understand the abuser’s actions. However, understanding and forgiving don’t mean condoning these actions.

The author’s straightforward style makes it easier to understand and follow the concept written. Not only does she mention several facts about abusive relationships, but she also provides sources that support her claims. Several hotline numbers, support groups, and websites are mentioned to aid those who are currently dealing with a toxic relationship.
My only critique is its length. The book's interesting topic leaves me wanting a longer and more in-depth book.

I'm eager to explore more of this author's work!

"Healing from Toxic Relationships" is an all-encompassing resource for individuals entangled in "problematic" (to use a more polite term from the current day) relationships. The author outlines signs of toxicity, which include manipulation, belittlement, social isolation, amongst others, and offers insight into how to deal with them. Turpin characterizes a toxic or abusive relationship as one involving more disrespect than support. "Abuse," per the author, isn't limited to romantic relationships, and can take various forms beyond just physical violence; it may be verbal, emotional, or psychological.

Each chapter opens with a short narrative, following a character named Melissa, enabling Turpin to humanize her concepts. Beyond relating to the victim, the author encourages readers to empathize with and understand the perpetrator's behavior. While doing so, Turpin emphasizes that understanding does not equate to excusing such actions. The writing is straightforward, veering away from what some might dismiss as psychobabble. The book includes resources to assist those currently facing a toxic relationship, which is helpful, and extensive references in the back. It's a short read, however, and some readers might be looking for something more detailed.

Healing and moving forward after suffering the effects of a toxic relationship is important to our mental wellbeing. The most important tool in this book is how to recognize that you are in an “unhealthy” relationship. Whether it be friendships that have no boundaries, coworkers who create hostile work environments or romantic partners who are excessively jealous or manipulative.  This book will help you to identify the issue and make the necessary changes for your own mental health. Sometimes it means breaking the patterns of codependency, for example sacrificing your own needs for theirs or an overriding need for validation from others. It could also mean allowing family members to lure you into guilt-trips with emotional blackmail. You have the power to create boundaries for yourself, to recover and heal from these life experiences that we can all fall into at some point in our lives. Build your self-esteem, confidence and healthy relationships based on respect and positive reinforcement using the exercises in this book.

Healing from Toxic Relationships in Marriage, Dating, and Interpersonal Connections: Break Free by Taking Steps Toward Recovery and Rebuilding Self-Esteem, Confidence and Healthy Boundaries by Ariane Turpin is one of the best how to improve your relationships books that I have read in years.

Turpin’s conversational tone as she speaks the truth about relationships embraces the reader and encourages them to be honest in their relationship assessment. By the end of this book, readers will understand how they can heal from toxic relationships and believe in healthier future relationships.

I found the sections on the different kinds of forgiveness and the process of letting go particularly helpful. I also loved the focus on positive outcomes. Lessons learned provide a good foundation to develop healthy future relationships built on trust and mutual respect. An additional bonus is provided at the end in the form of a free gift of 35 self-love journal prompts. I highly recommend this read for those who seek to improve their relationships of all kinds.

Besides helping you navigate life after a bad relationship, this book is also applicable to people who want to improve their self-worth, even if they haven't been in a relationship.

Increasing your self-worth can be achieved by practising certain self-care concepts, which the author suggests. I also enjoyed the chapter about codependency, but I wish that the book had gone into much more detail about it, as it is so crucial to understand and navigate after coming out of an unhealthy relationship.

The book contains several good nuggets such as learning to forgive those who caused you pain so that you can have peace and move onto better relationships and not let the past hamper the future.

My only issue with the book is that it scratches the surface on various key issues but never goes into depth in any of them.

More practical examples about the theory would've made the book better. It was a well-written book.

This is where I appreciate this book in its core, in the fact that the author did a very good job at explaining things through the prism of empathy at a subject matter that could easily be filled with pain and confusion. Such story sharing as the one presented in the case with Bella and Melissa brings a lot of realism to the approach that is explained to the readers. The way the book deems the awareness of self as equivalent to its worth is well done in my part and a takeaway people should reflect on when making decisions. The information regarding establishing self-limits and learning the signs of toxic relationships is rather helpful, giving the audience all the means necessary for their safety and appropriate relationships’ development.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

First of all, there are plenty of books out there that delve into toxic relationships. So, what makes this one stand out? The writing is wonderfully done. As a reader, you feel like you're part of the author's journey as she delves into the nitty-gritty of unhealthy relationships. It feels like she's addressing you personally.

Secondly, the book is thorough, despite being only a few pages long, leaving no stone unturned. As such, it deserves all the stars and should be picked off the shelf, especially by those who bear the burden of toxic relationships and would like to begin anew.

Encouraging

The biggest surprise I got from reading this was that as far as “relationships” were concerned, it was all-encompassing. I was just expecting work dealing with romantic entanglements, but the fact that all relationships between people have the possibility of being toxic and the numbers that backed this (over 80% of Americans consider their families dysfunctional!) touched me in particular.

No matter what situation you may find yourself in, I think this book will be of extreme help. Luckily, I've never been in any sort of toxic relationship. But now that I have read this book, I'm better for it because I will know what to spot, how do better my situation and how to heal; which is, I believe, the most important.

Like many people, my experience with toxic relationships is merely from TV or novels, so I'm not the most experienced person. But thanks to this book, I have a little bit more insight. I don't think I'll ever truly understand a toxic situation, especially since every person's experience is different

I highly recommend this book. Whether you're currently in a highly toxic relationship, healing at the end of one or if you're just a layman like myself. It's truly helpful, informative, inspiring and a really positive read
