Gun Violence 101: A Graphic Guide to How Gun Safety Policies Save Lives

The Truth About America’s Deadly Epidemic
Did you know that gun violence is the #1 cause of death among America’s children and teens? Or that guns in the home are far more likely to be used in killing family members than intruders?

A Powerful, Illustrated Guide to America’s Gun Crisis. In Gun Violence 101, criminologist Thomas Gabor, coauthor of American Carnage, and award-winning author and illustrator Violet Lemay expose the causes of gun violence and how America’s gun laws often do more harm than good. Featuring compelling research, original artwork, and shocking gun violence statistics, this book provides an urgent, eye-opening look at the true impact of guns in our society.

Many Americans have been misled by the gun lobby’s narratives, believing that guns in the home, gun carrying, and permissive gun laws increase safety. Instead, these policies have contributed to record-breaking numbers of gun deaths, mass shootings, and fatal road rage shootings. This book not only uncovers the facts about gun violence but also presents proven solutions to prevent gun violence, offering a roadmap for change.

The Essential Guide for Educators, Activists, and Policymakers. Whether you’re an educator teaching about the crisis, an activist advocating for change, or a policymaker searching for solutions, Gun Violence 101 is one of the most important books about gun violence today. With its accessible format and stunning illustrations, it joins the ranks of the best books on gun violence and is a must-read for those who want to separate gun control facts from fiction.

This book offers solutions, neatly organized and easily digestible. Charts and graphs lay out the stats in a way that should be convincing to most people. Guns are a problem, and there are 1.2 guns for every person in the United States. 😳 We can look at the data and what other countries do and see clear solutions to reduce the suffering, yet nothing seems to change. Over 6x as many Americans say it is too easy to buy a gun as those who believe the opposite—both sides of the aisle agree, yet the blood continues to flow.

But, if you feel like wasting your breath arguing with one of those people in the minority who equates unfettered access to guns with patriotism and Jesus, here are some handy talking points I gleaned from this book:

“If there are restrictions then only bad guys will have the guns!” —With that logic, we should have no laws about anything since criminals will break them anyway. No speed limits! Drive as fast as you want! We have laws because most people will follow them and those who don’t will be penalized, presumably. Laws draw a line in the sand of what we expect from society. We agree to be governed and in exchange we are supposed to receive life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness!

“Laws won’t fix crazy.” —Only 5% of mass murderers are severely mentally ill and half had no red flags. People are also more likely to complete suicide with a gun. Bullets from AR-15s pulverize bones and shatter organs. Laws may not detect or fix crazy, but they can reduce the death, trauma, expense and suffering gun violence creates. Also, an AR-15 at hand can change a fleeting moment of crazy into a tragedy.

Also, explain why while Japan has half the population of the US, but they only have 10 gun deaths per year vs. the 50k we have here in the USA. Sure, some of that might be cultural differences, but maybe, just maybe it’s due to their strict gun laws that require owners to prove their are adept, mentally competent, and have to be able to pass a test, vs how things are done here?

“My FREEDUMS!!!” —The US has 25x the gun homicide rate of other high income countries combined. What about other people’s rights to go about their lives without getting shot? And no, it’s not [insert minority group here] causing all the shootings. 13 of the 20 counties with the most gun homicides per capita were rural. It’s 40% higher in rural communities than metropolitan areas, Cleetus!

“Stand your ground!” = an excuse to shoot brown people for being “scary” and get away with it, increasing homicide rates by 8%. SYG increases violence, it doesn’t prevent it.

“2nd Amendment!” —Are you part of a well-regulated militia? The 2nd Amendment doesn’t even mention hunting. So just anyone should be able to buy a nuke by your belief?

Bottom line: Americans have too many guns, they are too accessible, and people are dying needlessly because the powerful gun lobby has strong armed our feckless politicians into doing nothing. Meanwhile, our pursuit of liberty is hindered because of the ability for nearly everyone to carry around increasingly deadly weapons without any proper training, screening or licensing requirements. We must be loud and continue to spit facts until something changes!

Every government leader needs to read and memorize this amazing resource

This book does an incredible job of organizing and succinctly stating and illustrating everything one needs to know about gun violence. After reading this, I see no way any sane leader (I’m talking to you, US congress members) could not immediately set to work on introducing needed and clearly bipartisan legislation that starts to put some sanity to our gun-related laws.

Dr. Gabor has already provided each of you a sound starting place!

Besides political leaders, this text should be read and comprehended by everyone. Its novel and modern approach to making the material easily digested makes it a universal text for our times.
