Did not quite like it. Main character wasn't written very well, in my opinion, he didn't really changed internally throughout the entire plot, even though he had some tough things to go through. Main female lead, even though wasn't perfectly engaginly written either, seemed much more identifiable with and alive.
Book was written in 1969 and its ending, seemingly, was encouraged/forced by Soviet ideology. Even though the plot was based on the struggle of Kazakh tribes with Dzungaria, in 1720-1730, it ended up praising Kazakh rulers for making an agreement with Russian Empire and making Kazakh territory a protectorate. Which I personally don't have a problem with, but I do have a problem with writers not being able to write what they actually think and having to write what government dictates. Even if it's the "druzhba narodov' thing.
