This book was written in the 1990s. The author recommends fetching packages from FTP servers. Yet LaTeX then is fairly close to how to use LaTeX today. There are more commands now, and more libraries, and better toolchains, but this is still a good overview of the technology and the book covers a range of different typesetting techniques.
