In Brave Mom, Sherry Surratt, president and CEO of MOPS International, shares honestly and openly about the fears every mom struggles with. From worry about your child’s safety and health to wondering if you are a good parent, to fears about your marriage and loss of self-identity, Sherry comes alongside every mom with practical, real, and hopeful help for these common fears that we’re all afraid to talk about. The 10 most common mom fears are each covered in their own easy to read chapter, made up of stories of real moms and the help and answers they found. Filled with advice and insight from Sherry and the hope and grace found in God’s wisdom, Brave Mom gives moms everything they need to leave fear behind and live the admittedly messy life of parenting with confidence and joy. Each chapter also contains a prayer for moms to help them turn their fears over to God’s protection and care. As the mom experts, MOPS provide moms around the country a connection to other moms, practical help to move ahead, and the warmth and grace of God’s love.
This is the theme book for our MOPS year and for that purpose, it worked really well. I didn't find any new and exciting information in it, but I appreciated personal stories from women who are going through the same thing I am with the raising of young children.
I like how the author discussed the common fears being experienced by most of the moms. I can personally relate since some of the topics discussed either already happened or I was able to experience it before or currently experiencing. These are facts that all moms can relate to.
After reading it, I realized that it is normal for me to experience such thoughts because I am not in control with what is happening in the world, especially now, with all the virus going on, I can't help but be helpless but then I realized that I am not alone in this. I need to be calm and think straight. I don't need to be scared nor panic since it is a normal thing to feel this.

One of the best parenting books I have ever read. Keeping this one on my shelf. Loved the format, which contained the perfect mix of straight-talk, Bible references, and stories from other moms....This is a must-read for parents of children of all ages.
Wonderful book. I love the honesty and the author's way of making me feel like I wasn't alone in my fears as a mom. Her tips to conquer fears are well written and there are some I will put into practice.
I appreciate how direct Sherry is in her books. She really gets to the point and exposes so many things we deal with behind the scenes. A beautiful, encouraging book for mothers.
Sherry Surratt, President & CEO of MOPS International is a collector. And in her book Brave Mom: Facing and Overcoming Your Real Mom Fears she collects stories from everyday moms. We meet Elizabeth, the mother of a strong-willed terror, Mandy, the mom who delivered her first child in the company of her in-laws, and Janis, the mom who’s faced cancer, to name a few. Not to mention, Surratt lets us into her own experiences as a normal mom who’s raised 2 kids to healthy adulthood.
With honesty, humor, and a lot of research, Surratt examines typical fears that moms (particularly moms of young children) face. Then she takes these fears apart, one by one, convincing the reader that we are not alone in struggling with these fears, reminding us that sometimes our fears are larger than life, and finally, offering concrete help for addressing our fears.
Honestly, when I picked up this book, I was expecting to read something a little more along the lines of David Platt’s Radical or Alex & Brett Harris’ Do Hard Things. I was anticipating an adrenaline-charged call to action for moms to reject the status quo, be different, change the world, etc. Instead Surratt’s book plainly acknowledges that as moms, our main hindrances to being brave are normal, and very status quo fears. Her goal is simply to help us work on these. She offers discussion or journaling questions at the end of each chapter, which make this a useful resource for reading independently, with a girlfriend, or even as a group book study.
I belong to MOPS when my son was in preschool till he graduated kindergarten then rejoin for a year when he was in elementary school. I love it as it was a place that you go and meet other moms especially if you are new to the area. So I was excited to be able to read this book, as it has been on my list since it came out.
Talking about the fears and overcoming them as a mom and realize that you are not alone. I am not in a MOPS group since there isn't one in my area for my age range of child.
In Brave Mom, Sherry not only shares her own experience, but also the top fears that a majority of mothers will face throughout their “Mom Career”. Also included are Sherry’s tips and godly wisdom on how to deal with these fears. Each chapter ends with key questions and action steps to help you process your own circumstances and to progress towards becoming the Brave Mom God has called you to be.
Overall, it’s a great read—not too deep, but makes you feel like you aren’t alone or crazy and gives practical advice for overcoming your real mom fears.
I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own. This book is good. It's not great. It's not bad. It's definitely worth reading, if for no other reason than to remind yourself that other moms think exactly the same thoughts that you do. The information and advice in the book is not new, but it's solid, well-researched and proven. And the inclusion of real mom stories of dealing with fears is the best part of this book.
Overall, the book did not grab me. The writing style was easy-to-read, but not compelling. It's worth your time to read it once, but not one to keep on the bookshelf for years to come.
Received this book through Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I really like this book as a mother there are so many fears that you have for your children and yourself. This book has many of those fears and makes you feel better as a mother knowing that others mothers have passed through this as well. Loved the many suggestions that were given. This would be a great book to give to new mothers so they know that they are not alone.
