After returning from Crowfield Forest and helping her brother Aldred reclaim the throne, all of Nortland has discovered that Rinna is an Elmentant. A creature, as is known throughout the land, that cannot be trusted. Rumour has it that one day, Elmentants will plunge the world into darkness once again.
With Aldred’s rein still young and fragile and the interests of the eight clans divided, Rinna now finds herself at the centre of the conflict. Her quest to find other Elmentants and the mounting worries about her visions and the powers of the gems inside of her lead her to one conclusion: She cannot stay in Crowfield.
But on her journey to find answers, she finds more than she bargained on.
Renske de Wolf was born in Heerlen, the Netherlands, on a cold Thursday in December 1987. She has been a lifelong writer and first began writing screenplays when she was 7 years old. An avid Oxford comma enthusiast, Renske has been an archaeologist, a salsa dancer, a stage actor, an ex-pat in Barcelona, and a university finalist for Strategic Business Plans. She was excited to become a whiskey connoisseur, until she sadly discovered she found whiskey, in fact, disgusting.
Renske currently resides in a small village near Eindhoven, the Netherlands. In her free time you can find her annoying her cats, dancing, reading a good book, or performing on stage with the International Theatre Collective Eindhoven. The King of Wolves was her first book. Her second book, The Smoke Wraiths, is expected on 25 October 2024.
I will spoil the whole plot, so better stop reading if you want to maintain your sweet innocence.
So listen, I loved this book, but I will write a scathing review because my One True Love, Bord, turns out to be a conniving liar. As Rinna loses her naivité, so do we, dear readers, as this beautiful braided viking of a man stabs her tearfully in the back. I guess he has the decency to feel bad about it, and let’s hope for a tragic make-up story in the next book to make up for this betrayal.
Rinna learns that the often drab world holds bad bad secrets, and actually shows some impressive strategizing. Too bad she lets out a bunch of dementors in the last chapter, but you really can’t blame the poor girl. She also makes it up with her dry humor in times of dire need, bless her heart.
The plot twist of the slimy new brother is a real surprise, and a very interesting one for the future. I for one am hoping for a tandem King thing, just as Rinna suggested.
And lastly, and on a more serious note, the overarching theme of finding your individuality, that repressing you emotions is unhealthy AF, and that tyrannic rulers pretty much suck, make this book a valuable read for, well, everone really.
5/5 stars, would surely let Bord betray us again.

Just WOW. I really loved The King of Wolves, but The Smoke Wraiths has just upped the game. I really loved reading about Rinna's journey as she grows older and starts to understand the world around her better and better. She has a lot of stuff to deal with in this book and her struggles are so relatable, even for us non-Elmentants. Also loved reading about Meleri and Jolanna and all the others, who clearly have their own roles to play in this story. The line between good and evil becomes more blurry, which I love. Some questions I had after reading The King of Wolves are definitely answered, but The Smoke Wraiths also throws a lot more questions your way... I guess now we have to wait for book 3. But holy cow, did this ending make me wish for more!
The moment that you grabb the book to read it you just don't want to stop, every chapter encourages you to read further wanting to know whats next. It was awesome to read it and i can't wait for the next adventure...
The long awaited sequel to the book that surprised me about two years ago. And yet again it surprised me. Love the little and not so little plot twists and turns. The “will they won’t they” of it all, the “on whose side am I on anyway?”
Usually part-two’s suffer from just being a bridge between beginning and ending, but I didn’t feel like that at all with those one.
Can’t wait to read part three! (And maybe even four?). Keep up the good work! (And I have thing to say about you know who!!!!)
As with The King of Wolves, I did not see this story unfolding the way it did! This book will leave you wanting more with each page, eager to be a part of Rinna's adventures. Exciting as these adventures are, The Smoke Wraiths also gives the reader a glimpse of what it is to be a young woman (and Elmentant) slowly building her strength and trust in herself. I cannot wait for what comes next for Rinna and her trusty steed, Smokey :D
Loved it! Some sequels are more of the same: the same story structure, intrigues , plot twists etc. But not in this case! Really enjoyed the variety in the surroundings, the tension, the characters, everything. Highly recommended!
