第171回芥川賞受賞作。古くなった建外装修繕を専門とする新田テック建装に、内装リフォーム会社から転職して２年。会社の付き合いを極力避けてきた波多は同僚に誘われるまま六甲山登山に参加する。その後、社内登山グループは正式な登山部となり、波多も親睦を図る目的の気楽な活動をするようになっていたが、職人気質で職場で変人扱いされ孤立しているベテラン社員妻鹿があえて登山路を外れる難易度の高い登山「バリ山行」をしていることを知ると……。

Firstly Bari is not Bali in Indonesia- it is about walking through the mountains off the track, going through the thick vegetation, sliding down hills, climbing up or going down cliffs, not in your state of the art mountain gears but in a cheap worker’s outfits you might buy from the local hardware shop. The setting that it is the workmates that he goes hiking with - and it is one of the workers who does not conform to the work place pressure who is the expert Bari climber - makes this really a story that resonates. It brings the non-everyday experience at the mountain somehow into the everyday life of Japanese work place culture. The descriptions of the hiking experience off the track was really vivid and stayed with me.
