Full circle of excellence.

I was really afraid to read Tom Taylor's last arc in his Nightwing run. I'd been loving the heartfelt superhero awesomeness, digging the Dick & Babs romance, and glad to be reading something with a hopeful, upbeat message to it. I didn't want it to end. And I didn't want Taylor to blow up everything in a bittersweet finale sendoff. Because that's kind of what the blurb for volume 7 sounded like.

description

But I really shouldn't have been worried.
It's Tom Taylor.
Dick Grayson is in a jam. He's been framed and made to look like he was behind the man behind the mask of the serial killer Heartless. On top of that, he's still dealing with his fear of falling, which is putting quite the damper on his superhero-ing, considering he's usually rooftop hopping after criminals.
So. He's got to go on a quest. A lone trek (with his dog) through snow-covered mountains to find the mythical land of {spoilers redacted} and find the one man who can help him regain what he's lost.

description

And while he's gone? Who is going to take care of Buldhaven?
Well, he's got friends who can cover it.
But seriously, the coolest callback was when

description

Taylor didn't let me down. The ending was great. I know I'm not the only one who was feeling a little trepidatious about picking up this final volume, so I'd like to let you all know that this isn't going to leave a bad taste in your mouth.
And if you haven't started reading this one yet? Go for it, you won't be sorry.

Tom Taylor’s run on Nightwing is one of my favourite runs in comicbook history (and I’ve been reading comics for coming up to 45 years now). I am going to miss this incredible book and do not envy the new creative team one little bit.

A fantastic overall run. However, judging this entry in isolation, it is not as good as previous volumes. The conclusion is satisfactory,  and there are good moments in the build-up, but the villain remains the weakest aspect, detracting from the conflict. Dick's journey and the Batfamily cameos really take centre stage, and whilst the antagonist lacks flair and depth, the same cannot be said about the protagonist. A true Nightwing passion project, Taylor and Redondo have created something special that just about sticks the impressive landing it deserves.

An emotional, exhilarating finale to one of the best superhero runs I’ve read. Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo stick the landing with heart, humor, and high-stakes action, delivering everything that’s made their Nightwing era special — razor-sharp dialogue, inventive visuals, and a Bat-family dynamic full of warmth. Seeing Dick Grayson tested in new ways, both as a hero and as a person, makes this a deeply satisfying and unforgettable send-off.

Thrilling action, suspense at every turn, characters with big hearts – no pun intended – what else is there to say?
Taylor's run is simply excellent and really helped me discover a character I knew little about and had absurdly discarded for whatever reason.

This run also allowed me to discover the extraordinary artist that is Bruno Redondo. I recommend it 200% to lovers of the Bat family and others.

Solid ending to the most recent era of Dick Grayson’s life…

Nightwing Vol. 7: Fallen Grayson by Tom Taylor is the final volume in Taylor’s run that helped showcase why Nightwing is such a good character…

Responding the many plots Taylor introduced, it clears the board for the next writer to build on…

Some of my favorite stuff in this volume was Nightwing and Deadman…as they do have a history…

However seeing so many others willing to help out Dick Grayson is also a chef’s kiss of storytelling (as he’s worked with a lot of people in this run and before and it’s very hard to find someone that doesn’t like him…other than his villains).

Highly recommend giving this a try…one of the top three Nightwing runs in my opinion…

"Nightwing 7: Fallen Grayson" is a fitting and satisfying resolution to Tom Taylor's "Nightwing" run. After being framed for the crimes of an odious super villain, Dick, accompanied by Haley, goes on a quest to a mysterious kingdom to regain his confidence prior to a major villain bashing conflagration.

Expect a new mentor for Dick with an unusual teaching style, some understated puppy action, Bruce moonlighting, a final resolution that feels final, Dick and Barbara acting like a real couple and a sad but long overdue meet the parents scene.

Quality comic bookery and a satisfying conclusion to Tom Taylor's run on Nightwing, leaving us with a new and fresh take on the character and his whole dang origin. Fallen Grayson gets right to the action as Heartless makes his big move: setting up Dick Grayson as Heartless. It's a surprisingly convincing turn that reminds us of all the moves Grayson has made in Bludhaven, ones that can be quickly twisted against him with the right framing.

So, Grayson hits the road to the Himalayas to deal with his fear of jumping off things (unexpectedly featuring a fun cameo from Deadman). Back in Bludhaven, the Batfamily works super hard to...keep the lights on? It feels like these two plotlines are on different timelines - Heartless is threatening to kill every half hour and Grayson is gone for multiple weeks?

In the end, Heartless gets his comeuppance (). It's a satisfying conclusion to a villain who mostly seemed like a gimmick - though a scary one at that.

Bruno Redondo draws the whole volume and it's terrific as usual. Wonderful to have him back after he was AWOL on the last volume and I can't wait to see what he draws next. For Taylor's part, this is easily one of his best works and I'm honestly more engaged with Nightwing than Batman at this point. Well done.

yk what? hell yeah

although the antagonist wasn’t as complex as the protagonist (my boy dick grayson), i still love taylor’s interpretation of the character minus whatever happened in the middle. very solid ending, beloved characters - it really is live love tom taylor man + redondo’s iconic art esp at the end man

cool retcon of deadman, the inspo for dick’s costume. street stuff and consequences make its return with the story returning its focus on nightwing, his fears and hopes for the city. for the most part harmless and really did good for the character in some aspects 🫡

A satisfying end to this run. This volume was just subarashi in so many ways. The character development arc, the spiritual journey, the scented bubble bath, and overcoming childhood trauma.

-Loved Batman returning the favor to Nightwing
-Loved the end to the villain
-Loved the art

Sad to see this run end but as they say:

This run of Nightwing comes to the end in a very action-packed way. Definitely going to miss this team on the book!
Highlights:
- Heartless makes his move: knocks out Dick, uses the media against him, puts his mask on Dick framing him for murder, and totally destroying his reputation. Dick goes on the run, Heartless continues his reign but openly proclaiming himself as Dick Grayson, and Bruce suits up as Nightwing to help fight back.
- Dick goes to Nanda Parbat to start training with Deadman, who when he was alive, helped Dick to overcome his fear of falling. He's been having a huge fear of it lately, which is affecting his crime fighting. Not only do we see that Dick has been poisoned by Heartless, but his fears wrapped up in the finality of his parents' death are overcome as he takes a huge leap off the side of a mountain.
- Dick returns to Bludhaven just in time to begin clearing his name. He figures out that he is Shelton Lyle, and seems to want to expose him. The Bat-Family removes the kidnapping threat that Heartless was holding over so many, and Heartless is fully thwarted.
- Heartless tries to get away, but Nightwing is able to dive again and catches him. During their final battle, Heartless kills Zucco, stealing Dick's justice, but his reign of terror is finally over.
- Dick makes his peace at his parent's gravesite and Bludhaven begins to heal.

Tom Taylor will go down in history for this epic run. Looking forward to seeing what's next for this piece of the Bat Family.
Strong recommend, both Volume and run.

A quick and easy five-star rating for this book. I like the artwork (it fits the story) and a great story. I just have one complaint: How does anyone not know Dick Grayson is Nightwing. If there is one disguise that is worse than Clark Kent being Superman, it is Nightwings. He even keeps the same hairstyle as Nightwing. Though this complaint is for the series, not this book.

Dick Grayson has done amazing work in Blüdhaven, but the higher you rise, the greater the fall. Now, the criminal known as Heartless is going to make his move. He is not planning to take the city he is trying to destroy everything Dick Grayson has built. The story will come full circle. Many old grudges, debts, new fears, and memories will be faced and settled.

This is an awesome conclusion to this story arc. I don't know if it was just that I was enjoying this book more, or if the issues were just shorter, I just felt the book flew by. The book finishes with a varient covers gallery and a sketchbook.

This has been one of my favorite series of all time, and I'm sorry to see it go. I'm not a Nightwing fan per se, but I am a Tom Taylor Nightwing fan. Redondo's art was also beautiful. And together, the art and wiring was like a perfect symphony, working off each other to tell a really great story.

It is always interesting when a long run ends and to think back on when the bok started and the time that has passed. I came to it a bit late in 2023, but so much has changed in two years for me. And this book was there with me.

I hope Taylor is on something good that fits his style soon. I don't think I will care much for a different Nightwing take. But this Nightwing will always be how I conceptualize who the character is. The man Robin grew up to be. Some people do get happy endings.

A great run that understands a hero's best powers, usually aren't powers.

Taylor's run, looked at as a whole, is fantastic. It moved seamlessly between great fun, wry nods to the history of its characters and satisfying cameos, to genuine heartfelt introspection. Some entries are better than others, and I enjoyed it most when it was focussed on its Heartless villain and meta-arc - which is why I feel the story was mildly disappointing in the end in that regard. Heartless has fizzled out a few times and while the ending in broad strokes is very strong thematically, it feels a little rushed and superfical how quickly it's all wrapped up. The villain was conceptually quite terrifying but not enough was done with it and his plan amounted to almost nothing in the end. Replacing a few of the previous volumes with stories that showed Heartless as a more competent and menacing villain, would have gone a long way. We've had some great interactions with The Titans and League, but it was nice to get more of The Bat Family in here. As the final volume it's one of the better ones, and while it maybe doesn't completely stick the landing, it paints a very sincere and heartfelt portrait of what makes Nightwing such a great character with plenty of connective tissue to the rest of DC and the characters history.
