An original collection of thirteen exciting science fiction & fantasy stories by the #1 bestselling author of the Star Wars Thrawn trilogy.
He captivated readers with his creation of General Thrawn beginning with his #1 New York Times–bestselling Star Heir to the Empire. Now, Hugo Award–winning author Timothy Zahn shares thirteen of his masterful science fiction and fantasy stories, previously published separately in magazines and anthologies throughout his career, together for the first time in one original collection.
Take a trip down memory lane with Zahn and prepare yourself for a journey across space and time where you will see wonders of technology, powerful magic, and chilling monsters. In "The Battle of Space Fort Jefferson," a mild-mannered Park Service Ranger must deal with terrorists aboard a former space prison and quarantine center that's now a largely deserted tourist attraction. Administrators from Earth discover an alien race's secret to longevity in "A Lingering Death." A wizard prepares for the army of the evil witch king in "A Touch of Rosemary." Scientists discover the dangers of first contact in the novella Cordon Sanitaire. A jazz music aficionado travels two hundred years back in time to 1953 Pittsburgh in "For Love of Amanda." A vampire helps Hollywood celebrities avoid the paparazzi in "Vampin' Down the Avenue." A werewolf and a mermaid encounter murder in the countryside in "Protection." These stories and more await readers in this exciting collection, full of all the action, mystery, suspense, thrills, chills, and humor that have made Zahn a leader in science fiction and fantasy.
Timothy Zahn attended Michigan State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in physics in 1973. He then moved to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and achieved an M.S. degree in physics in 1975. While he was pursuing a doctorate in physics, his adviser became ill and died. Zahn never completed the doctorate. In 1975 he had begun writing science fiction as a hobby, and he became a professional writer. He and his wife Anna live in Bandon, Oregon. They have a son, Corwin Zahn.
A collection of 13 short stories by Timothy Zahn, dating from 1980 to 2018, with all but two written post 2000. I have always appreciated Zahn's story telling skills, having read a number of his series, including Cobra, Quadrail, and The Icarus Saga. However, I was really impressed by his ability to use the short story format and deliver strong emotional impact.
Cordon Sanitaire is a great example. Its the story of a scientific exploration of a planet by a group of scientists of varying backgrounds. The story embeds three different layers of meaning to cordon sanitaire; a zone between their encampment and the surrounding jungle, the planet itself booby trapped to keep potential colonizers away from this sector of space, and the protective barrier we build around our hearts.
The title story is a fun tale of how a dilapidated park station in space outwits a group of terror/assassins trying to publicize their cause: free Norway, by killing the President.
Definitely recommend, and I plan to start reading some more of Zahn's short story collections,
One thing to get off my chest before the review: This ebook lacks a table of contents linked to the start of each story, something that should be standard in every ebook. That said, every story is top notch. And the title story, Battle of Space Fort Jefferson, is of course last but a pleasure to read to and to read. As a retired naval officer who served in the post Vietnam military and then civil service, I have experienced some Space Fort Jefferson-like ships and installations, enhancing my enjoyment of this story. This book is everything I expected from Timothy Zahn, a top notch author.
