Haven't really gotten into this one yet, but I've come across something others will find important on page 5.
"AppleScript comes installed with all version of the Mac OS since prehistoric times - in other words, the 1990s. The examples in this book assume you have OS 10.3.3. The good news is that while the capabilities of AppleScript keep improving, the basic syntax hasn't changed. As a result, scripts that work in OS X oftern work in OS 9 - unless they use OS X applications, such as the Finder."
Since this is both an introductary book of AppleScript, and an old book (as computer books become dated quicker than other books) this is worth pointing out for 2 reasons; firstly because it means that its still a relevant language and as useful now as when the book was written, and secondly because since its an old book it can be picked up for almost nothing when bought second hand - and considering some essential (though probably not introductory) programming books are pricey this is no bad thing at all.
