Marie Curie: A Biography
Marie Curie (1867-1934) was one of the most important woman scientists in history, and she was one of the most influential scientists―man or woman―of the 20th century. Curie postulated that radiation was an atomic property, a discovery that has led to significant scientific developments since. She was also the first person to use the term radioactivity. Her perseverance led to the discovery of two new elements, polonium and radium. This combination of creativity and perseverance netted her two Nobel Prizes, one in physics and the second in chemistry. This book, however, looks at more than her scientific achievements. While Curie is often portrayed as a stern, one-dimensional woman so totally committed to her science that she was incapable of complex emotions, the truth is that the opposite is the case.

Biografía muy superficial.

No he leído muchas biografías, pero me ha parecido muy completa.
Nos cuenta la infancia de Marie, cómo era su familia, su padre, sus hermanos, cómo fue su formación académica desde pequeña en casa y en el colegio, su situación social y cómo ello formó su carácter. La cantidad de trabas que con fuerza de voluntad superó y que nadie nunca le regaló nada. Nos habla de sus múltiples trabajos para poder mantenerse y poder pagar los estudios. Su etapa en la universidad y la cantidad de gente erudita a la que conoció y por la que se interesó y estudió sus trabajos. Sus amores, sus amigos, su matrimonio, su luna de miel, sus hijas y sus abortos, su estudio con el radio desde el inicio y la cantidad de años que dedicó a ello. Su etapa madura, el crecimiento y educación de sus hijas, sus vacaciones, todo gracias a que dedicaba tiempo a escribir y dejar constancia de todo como buena científica. La guerra y su lucha por que la humanidad se beneficiara de su descubrimiento de forma gratuita. Su vejez y últimos trabajos.

Menelusuri kehidupan salah seorang ilmuwan wanita terhebat sepanjang masa, bahkan Albert Einstein pun mengagumi beliau sebagai sosok-yang meskipun terkadang sangat keras kepala- namun tidak diragukan lagi juga merupakan'extraordinary scientist'.
Menjalani peran sebagai istri, ibu sekaligus ilmuwan, salah satu jalan hidup yang jarang ditempuh orang kebanyakan. Namun Marie Curie berhasil melewati itu semua, meskpun akhirnya harus rela berkorban nyawa akibat paparan radiasi, hasil temuannya sendiri. One of the best biography i've read so far.

Amé este libro, no pude dejarlo desde que comencé. Que mujer tan más admirable, luchó por el solo motivo de nacer mujer, en una época liderada por hombres. Girl power!
Lo comencé a leer porque acababa de ver la película que recientemente salió, me quedé con varias dudas de que pudo ser cierto y que pudo ser libertad de los guionistas, que bueno que encontré el libro es mucho mejor y desmiente varios relatos de la película.
La historia de Marie Curie es fascinante, me emocionó el leer sobre una mujer tan fuerte. Nacida en Varsovia, fue la hija mas pequeña de 5, quedó huérfana a temprana edad. Creció durante el mandato del Zar Nicholas ya que Varsovia era parte del imperio ruso y bueno ya sabemos como terminó eso !RIP!.
Estudió a escondidas ya que ella ansiaba el conocimiento.
No estaba interesada en conocer el amor, pero conoció a Pierre quien luchó por ella (sniffff), y aunque pudiera considerarse una historia de amor atípica, su matrimonio con Pierre Curie, era un matrimonio basado en la admiración, así que las medias naranjas pueden encontrarse donde sea y ser de cualquier tipo radiactivo.
Fue precursora de estudios basados en la radiactividad, la primera mujer en recibir dos premios Nobel en distintas especialidades (física y química) y como si fuera poco la primera mujer en ser profesora en la Universidad de París. Y su súper amigo fue Albert Einstein ¡OMG!
Lectura súper recomendable.

Es la segunda biografía de Marie Curie que leo, ella me parece extraordinaria y tuvo que luchar contra el machismo de la época, incluso que la opacaran ante su marido. Es una de mis mujeres favoritas en la historia

I believe it's a good book that this book is life-changing because I will get the point of view of a woman who was constantly thought of as stupid and shot down. After all, she was a woman scientist in the 1800s. I would like to understand her hardships and the result of her learning about radioactivity, and how she rose up from those conflicts. This will change my hero’s journey because I will strive to be like her.

She wanted to make a story about one of the most influential women in the world, and she believed that this was the perfect chance to make that book. I believe the author has a very unique voice she made everything sound professional.
Plot:
Marie Curie was born on November 7th, 1867, in Warsaw, Poland. At that time, Poland was still a part of Russia, and Russia did not want kids to go to school because they were worried about a revolution. So she had to go to school secretly. Her mother died when she was very young, and her father was extremely strict with her siblings. It was also hard for her because 2 of her younger siblings died with her mother from an unidentified sickness. She got older and moved to Paris, France, with her older sister and his husband. There she met Pierre Curie the moment she met him, she immediately fell in love with him, and he promised he would stick with her through thick and thin. There in Paris at 24, she started attending her practical learning of the sciences, where she earned all higher degrees. She participated in the university of Paris as the only woman working on radioactivity. She got a lot of hate for it. Years later she earned the Nobel prize along with Pierre Curie for working with pure radioactivity. In 1906 Pierre Currie died in a Paris street accident. She was silent and distraught for so many years after Pierre. She decided to resume her work with radioactivity. Then she won another Nobel prize. Marie won the 1911 Nobel Prize in chemistry for discovering elements such as plutonium and radium. She was the only woman ever to win a Nobel prize and the only one to win 2 Nobel prizes. Later she started to learn mathematics. Later that year, Marie's eldest sister died from typhus. She started perfecting x rays to help the hospitals during world war 1. Then Marie died from radioactive exposure in 1994. We still respect her even to this day. She teaches us that even if we have a hard life, we should still overcome our problems and never give up.

La biografía me pareció completa (aunque cabe resaltar, que he leído muy pocas biografías), relata las partes más importantes de la vida de está científica de forma lineal. Además, la autora nos introduce no solo al descubrimiento científico de Marie curie si no a los que son cercanos y tienen conexión a este hallazgo (familia, amigos, científicos y sus investigaciones, entre otros aspectos), me gustó mucho que incluyera una breve biografía de Pierre en el transcurso del libro e igualmente que explicará los descubrimientos realizados por otros científicos.
Por otro lado, es impresionante lo que logro Marie Curie en una época tan difícil para una mujer sumándole a esto su nacionalidad y su complicada infancia. Es por mucho de admirar.

Wie een diepgaande studie over het leven en werk van Marie Curie wil lezen moet deze biografie niet ter hand nemen. Het wordt trouwens klaar en duidelijk gezegd in het voorwoord.
Ik wou als achtergrondinformatie meer weten over deze grote dame uit de wetenschappelijke wereld en het werk van Marilyn Bailey Ogilvie heeft me absoluut niet teleurgesteld.
Dit is een heldere en goed geschreven biografie met een schat aan informatie over Marie Curie, en tevens ook vertrekpunt voor verdere lectuur.
Ik wou als achtergrondinformatie meer weten over deze grote dame uit de wetenschappelijke wereld en het werk van Marilyn Bailey Ogilvie heeft me absoluut niet teleurgesteld.

Should have known better than to read a book where the foreword starts with "In response to high school and public library needs..." But it served its purpose and gave me the main facts of her life. Next time I'll be avoiding high school biographies and keeping my eye out for something with more depth and charm.

i knew science was interesting but not this fun and innovative. i had so much fun reading this book plus i was recording it for the samarthan trust for the blind children/ adults and im grateful i got to this little bit for the community and grateful to have read the book and learnt so much about the international phenomenon that is radioactivity <3

Una buena biografía para conocer a Marie. Sólo que utiliza algunos términos que pueden perder al lector que no sabe mucho de la disciplina.
