Dead & Lovely

Rate this book
The Realm tells all. It never lies.

For the Lovely, there are two defining days in life, three if they’re fortunate.
The first is at birth, when the one with whom they shared a womb forever joins the dead. The second is in their sixth year, when they touch their first stone and connect with the Realm.
Olean knows this all too well, having accessed the Realm for years, reading people, seeing and feeling their thoughts and actions as if they were her own. Now that she’s of age and possesses a higher stone ability, her third defining day has come—a chance to join the prestigious Queen’s Garden.
But this change isn’t the only one she’ll face.
When the queen arrives for a test, Olean learns not all truths are so clearly seen. A voice informs her of the recent castle murders and urges her to link her mind with Croft’s—a royal attendant who may know more than most—to find answers that could save other lives, quite possibly her own.
Olean must choose between her desired path to a revered position or one that risks it all, filled with deception to the Crown and to Croft, going against everything she’s ever known.

I was provided an ARC of this book via the author and Netgalley. The author also provided me an audible code on release day. I listened to the audiobook after finished up the ebook, and the audible narration was excellent. The narrator did a wonderful job voicing the different characters. I was curious how she was going to voice the scenes between Olean and Croft, since they have an interesting way of communicating. I thought the narrator did a great job with the communication and display of emotion in the audiobook.

This was a unique YA Fantasy following Oleander, Olean for short, a talented Lovely who can connect to the Realm via the use of special stones. The Realm is kind of an alternate dimension and those who can enter it via the use of the powerful stones are called Lovely. Each Lovely can use one or multiple stones and each stone has a different use and they are all regulated by the Crown. Olean can connect with multiple stones, making her a valuable asset to the kingdom. She has recently relocated from the small village she was raised in to the castle to use her abilities to help the royal family help uncover some strange events that have recently occurred. She makes a connection, another unique character, as he is deaf and the Lovely can't use the stones on him. He is a trusted member of the royal family and Olean quickly comes to trust him as well. Olean and Croft's connection isn't just romantic, it is also driven by the Realm and the stones. Olean hesitates to come clean about their connection for fear that it may hurt Croft and their blossoming romance. Through her connection with Croft and her ability to use all of hte stones, Olean becomes a powerful member of Lovely society and a key player into what becomes a murder investigation. She quickly uncovers foul play and is able to uncover some major secrets within the castle and the Lovely society.

I really enjoyed this novel. It has a nice mystery element mixed in with a unique magic element that I haven't seen before. It made for a really entertaining plot. I enjoyed Olean as a main character and thought she and Croft had good chemistry. They have a bit of a slow burn but they figure things out despite starting out with a communication barrier and some secret keeping. I thought the world building and pacing was great as well.

Wow, I won this off of the Narrators live stream and I truly SCORED.
This is a gem of a book that needs more hype immediately.
The world building is a little intense off the start so make sure when you dive in that you're paying attention because there is a bit of info dumping that occurs. I didn't love that but I promise the author circles back to it throughout the story to remind you of what each stone does and how the powers are determined. I liked that this was a fairly hard magic system with a structure to follow. Each lovely (the characters allowed to use the stones powers) all are categorized by their powers and its very easy to follow the hierarchy within the realm. This lead to very powerful story arcs for several characters throughout the book.
The mystery within this story was a bit predictable but the delivery was enjoyable. I never fault the story for that because this is a YA fantasy and I think for the age range of reader it makes sense.
Overall this is a story of mystery, magic, and slow burn romance that was swoon worthy. I know its a standalone but I'd kill for a novella of some of the side characters because this was a world I was sad to leave.

Audio Review:
Dead and Lovely is a ya fantasy book that will hook you from the beginning to the end. The author created a unique world with detailed descriptions and settings. I enjoyed the underlying mystery plot that took another twist in the story. The magic system was very intriguing. The characters were interesting and the storyline well written. The writing style is solid and the plot compelling. A good ending to the story.

Amelia Hugh did a amazing performance with this audio. Her inflection was easy to listen to. I felt like i was transported into another world.

The audio was a good listen and I recommend listening.

For the Lovely, there are two, maybe three if fortunate, defining days in their life.

The first is at birth, when the one they share a womb with also makes an entrance into the world, only to forever join the dead. Their souls’ connection is never fully severed, leaving a tether between the living and the dead, creating a connection to, what is called, the Realm.

The second is in their sixth year, when they touch their first stone and connect with the Realm. A test to see what they can offer to the kingdom and is also their Naming Day.

The possible third is if you possess a higher stone ability than others, the chance to serve at the castle and join the prestigious Queen’s Garden, the Realm division of the kingdom’s army. Olean has this opportunity.

When the Queen comes with her son and their mute and deaf attendant for the Naming Day for the youngest in their group, they happen to have a white stone.

The Queen has Olean touch it to see if she can use it. And she does. She connects with the Realm where she hears a voice telling Olean she needs to help them solve the murders that are happening to the other Lovely. This voice tells Olean to link herself to Croft, the deaf and mute royal attendant, since he will have seen and know things. She does, it works, and now must keep this secret while navigating life at the castle and solve the murders.

This was such a unique and good read! I love the way J.M. Miller writes her romances. They’re always so wholesome and fantastic slow burns, my favorite.

The world setting was interesting to me, in that, humans who don’t have connection to the stones are in charge and essentially control the lives of the Lovely(the ones who CAN touch the stones). It almost seems like it should be the opposite, but it just kind of put it into perspective that one can be in charge by fear alone because although these Lovely were powerful in their own way, they submitted to these rulers. Their lives were also very oppressive and sad. When you learn the whole story of how a Lovely comes to be, it’s just sad and their whole life is not really any better.

The magic system is unique too where the Lovely connect with stones that allow them to access different parts of what is referred to as the Realm. They can search memories and recite them out loud for others to hear, they can connect with animals and use them, they can see ones desires and fears, etc. There’s a lot they can do, and of course, some stones are not readily available or are missing, but they’re generally always in the possession of the royals, another way to control the Lovely.

It made for a unique and interesting world that I loved learning about.

There’s quite a few characters that we get to know and love, a found family if you will.

Oleander or Olean, is a wonderful character. She’s always been the one to hold it together and take care of others and basically show no emotion of how anything affects her. Compartmentalizing is what she seemed to do. Until she goes to the castle and experiences a different life and meets Croft and learns it’s okay to show emotion, it’s okay to cry and let it out. She always held it together until she finally lets go when she’s back in her room. She is a very admirable character. She did keep a huge secret and revealed it in a way that, although beneficial, kind of stunk for some 😅, but I think the way the secret played out was well done and helped us learn about forgiveness and understand that some make mistakes and it’s okay to forgive them. No one is perfect.

I love the relationships that grow in here. Olean has grown up with a few other Lovely in their Lovely Nursery, and they seemed to be a bit distant from one another until they go to the castle and she essentially mothers them and tries to help them. They all grow closer, albeit slowly, but they do, and I loved seeing that. They grew slowly into a beautiful found family.

The romance in here is 👌🏻 top notch. I love a good slow burn that just builds and builds until I feel like I am the one that’s going to combust. And this one delivered. With Croft being mute and deaf, it’s hard to get a read on him, but you learn about him based on his actions, especially around Olean 😏, and his thoughts that Olean can hear. The way their relationship built was just oh so swoony. I adored grumpy Croft and his dog Argo and how he seemed to just only have eyes for Olean. It was just so sweet and loved the way the romance developed.

Along with the romance, there’s also a mystery, secrets, twists and drama. I love when there’s a mystery to solve in a fantasy. It adds such a nice element to a fantasy and I always love getting to know these characters, experiencing a romance AND having to solve a mystery. Makes for a fantastic story!

I highly recommend this one if you love fantasy romances with a mystery added to it. And if you love slow burn romances with a grumpy bodyguard, then you definitely need to check this one out!

Thank you to the author for the gifted e-ARC to read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

J. M. Miller (https://www.jmmillerbooks.com) is the author of more than half a dozen novels. Dead & Lovely was published last month. It is the 79th book I completed reading in 2024.

I received an ARC of this book through https://www.netgalley.com with the expectation of a fair and honest review. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own! Due to scenes of violence, I categorize this novel as R.

Oleander is a lovely. These are people identified at birth as having the ability to use the stones to communicate with the Realm. Once identified, the lovely are indentured to the Kingdom for life, providing truth through readings made with the stones. Different stones enable unique abilities in a lovely. Not all stones can be used by every lovely. To Oleander’s credit, she has been able to use every stone she is given to try.

Oleander’s dream of being chosen for the Queen’s Garden is fulfilled, and she is relocated to the capital. But, once she arrives, she finds it is not the perfect setting she had expected. Two of the other Lovelys have been murdered, and two others are missing. The kingdom is in turmoil, with extra guards everywhere.

At Oleander’s induction ceremony, an attempt is made on the Royal family. Oleander detects it and moves to spill the poisoned wine being offered to them. Through her quick thinking, she saves most but not all of the family.

Clearly, there is serious opposition to the king and they are willing to kill to succeed. Lovely must be involved to use the power of the stones. Oleander wants to uncover who is behind the turmoil, though she knows that by seeking the truth. she is putting her own life in danger.

Oleander meets royal attendant Croft at the ceremony where she is chosen to become one of the Queen’s Garden. After moving to the capital Croft is assigned to her as her personal attendant. Oleander discovers she has a unique connection to Croft, and, as they spend more time together, their feelings towards one another grow stronger.

Can Oleander discover who is behind the deaths before she too becomes their victim?

I enjoyed the 11.5+ hours I spent reading this 383-page young adult fantasy. The book starts a little slow but it builds in excitement in the last third of the novel. The plot is filled with intrigue and acts of treason. While the cover art is relevant to the story, it is very dark. I give this novel a rating of 4.4 (rounded to 4) out of 5.

Dead & Lovely was a book that felt really weird at first, but with a unique magic system and a mystery on our hands, it got better really fast.

As I said, at the beginning I was really unsure about this book and it gave me more of a cult vibe, but soon enough I found out that that's not the case. The Lovely are humans with special abilities, and thus they are really important for the royal family. With names picked by the Empress after flowers and stones that help them use their powers, the whole idea of this magic system is intriguing and complex.

Another part I enjoyed was Croft. He's a royal attendee, but he's deaf and mute and the author did a great job portraying him and showing that while he may face some difficulties, he can still be a great character.

All in all, if you power through the first part, reading this book is really worth it in my opinion

Dead & Lovely by J. M. Miller captivated me from the very start with its unique and imaginative world-building. The concept of the Lovely—individuals with the ability to access the mysterious Realm through stones, gaining insights into others' thoughts and feelings—was fresh and intriguing. I found myself easily immersed in this fantastical world, eager to learn more about the abilities that make the Lovely so special.
The story follows Olean, a young woman with dreams of being chosen for the Queen's Garden, an elite group of Lovely tasked with high-level responsibilities. When Olean's abilities are tested, she hears a voice in the Realm telling her about looking into the deaths of the Lovely at the castle. She is selected to join the Queen’s Garden, taking her to the castle where she uncovers dark secrets. The tension escalates as she becomes involved in investigating a string of murders targeting other Lovely within the castle. Alongside Croft, a young man whom is deaf and is tasked as her Assistant (whom she mind-links with, unbeknownst to him), and his loyal dog Argo, Olean faces dangers that challenge everything she knows. However, Croft’s hidden secrets add layers of complexity to their relationship and the investigation.
The chemistry between Olean and Croft was one of the highlights of this book for me. Their evolving relationship, filled with trust and tension, added an emotional depth to the plot. I also appreciated how their partnership grew as they unraveled the mysteries surrounding the deaths.
The world-building in Dead & Lovely was incredibly well thought out. The concept of using different stones to connect with the Realm, each offering a unique power or ability, was something I hadn’t encountered before, and it added a layer of magic and mystique to the story. The idea of the Realm itself—where thoughts, feelings, and even experiences can be accessed—felt like a boundless source of both power and danger.
As the mystery unraveled, I was kept on edge, eager to see what would happen next. The twists and turns kept me guessing, and the stakes felt high as Olean discovered not only the truth behind the murders but also truths about herself and those she trusted.
Overall, Dead & Lovely was an engaging read that I thoroughly enjoyed. The plot was unique, the characters were compelling, and the world-building was one of the most interesting aspects of the story. If you enjoy fantasy with complex characters, and a slow-burn romance, I highly recommend picking up Dead & Lovely. I’m so glad I chose to read it!

I really took my time on this read. It was such a loving and admirable story. It hit all the plot points in making a dark fantasy story also mysterious and informative. The world building was extensive and so effective, it was like walking as the FMC herself while experiencing everything first hand. J.M. Miller really captured Oleans character, bringing her to life, while also giving so many others such different personalities to counteract one another. The author also shed light on the male characters, showing us that the good guy didn’t have to show dark traits to capture Oleans hand. I think the love interests are an excellent representation of how relationships can truly blossom and that forgiveness is achievable. Dead & Lovely is a beautiful story and a great read.

This is a YA Dark fantasy while also a mystery. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Dead & Lovely was my first YA Fantasy by J.M. Miller that I have read. She has a way of bringing characters to life in a way many authors can't.

The world setting was something I didn't understand at first but as I kept reading it became clearer and made more sense. As for the magic structure, it was what I liked most about the book. The Lovely are able to connect to the Realm with stones. The Realm is almost like an alternate dimension. Though each Lovely can use multiple stones that have individual uses that are controlled by the crown.

Oleander, Olean for short, is the narrator of this story who is able to connect to many of the stones which makes her extremely valuable. Throughout the book we watch her navigate how she helps the royal family and her budding relationship with Croft the royal attendant who is both mute and deaf.

I really enjoyed reading this book! It was nothing of what I was expecting and I think that is why I enjoyed it so much!

The story follows Olean, a talented "Lovely" with the rare ability to connect with magical stones that link her to a hidden Realm. As she steps into a new role in the prestigious Queen’s Garden, Olean uncovers dark secrets and faces moral dilemmas that test her loyalties.

I loved its unique world-building. The magic system is fresh and intriguing, creating a rich backdrop for the story. Olean’s journey of self-discovery and the complex relationships she navigates make for an engaging read, and the mystery that unravels throughout the book keeps you hooked.

This was so beautifully written and the story itself was quite unexpected (in the best way possible)! The magic system was incredibly unique and I can't even think of a comparable world to the one JM Miller has expertly crafted. In addition to the concept of Lovelies who can access what is known as the Realm with the use of stones (which come in various strengths), there is a mystery subplot that comes into play that helps progress the story and keeps the reader guessing as to what will happen next. I adored both the FMC and MMC and how their relationship developed and also really appreciated the representation of the deaf and mute community with Croft as a character.

Surprisingly well written for a book I had never heard of and got when it was on sale for free.

That said, it was a simple and predictable book. The word wholesome also comes to mind. It would be appropriate for a younger audience; definitely fine for middle school, probably also for elementary.

The book was not compelling enough for me to continue the series (if it is even part of a series).

Dead & Lovely had a really interesting magic system that I really enjoyed. It was a quick and easy read that I stayed up far too late to finish.

Some of the plot points were a little predictable, however, but this didn't detract from the overall fun of the book.

Love love loved this book. The magical system is so interesting and how the lovely are important to the royal family. The way the lovely are named and their powers are also so cool. The story starts off slow but share a lot of important details and then the story is underway.

Beautiful story

I would say that this is a story that shows how to fight hard for change and the struggles that come with that. The story is about a group of people that is different and the bravery of a girl that is fighting for change. Also a story of found family, with a sprinkle of romance at the end. I will definitely recommend reading or listening to the book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. At first I did find it a bit slow, but soon enough it picked up the pace. I found the magic system quite different and complex. The Lovely are a group of people with an affinity with the Realm and the stones, with which they are capable of reading the memories of people, as well as be able to see dead people. It is extremely interesting how this magic works, and I loved it.
Olean is a great character. We learn everything from her point of view and believe in the same things she does. Her relationship with Croft and Ivy.
Croft is another character I loved, he proves that you don’t need a character to say a lot, in other to see how much he cares for everyone he loves.
Thank you Net Galley and J.M. Miller for providing an ARC of this book.

Oleander or Olean is a Lovely that can harness the power of stones. On Girl's Name Day Ceremony, a startling truth is revealed which leads Olean to question it's mysteries. Croft has a blocked mind while being deaf and mute. Croft understands things very well and Olean has a strange link into Croft's mind. Lovely's have gone missing or died. Who is responsible? Can Olean learn the truth? Find out in Dead & Lovely.

I want to thank J. M. Miller for this ARC via Netgalley.

"Dead & Lovely" by JM Miller was exactly the spellbinding adventure I needed as a mood reader preparing for spooky season! From its inventive magic system to its intricately woven mystery, this YA fantasy captivated me from the first page. The world-building is rich and imaginative, with a magic structure unlike anything I've encountered in a long time. The concept of the "Lovelies" — individuals whose lives are defined by their connection to the Realm — was particularly fascinating. I loved how being a Lovely carried a sort of social status, making it both a privilege and a burden.

Olean, our tenacious and insightful main character, made for a remarkably reliable narrator. Experiencing this complex world through her eyes added an extra layer of authenticity as she navigated new truths and dangerous secrets. Her journey from eager candidate for the Queen's Garden to someone questioning everything she'd ever known felt genuine and compelling. The story's unfolding mirrored her growth beautifully, and I admired her courage in the face of uncertainty.

Croft was irresistible from the moment he was introduced — I fell for him immediately. His fierce loyalty and protectiveness toward Olean made their partnership dynamic and heartfelt. The chemistry between them simmered subtly, adding emotional stakes to the tension-filled plot.

One of the book's standout elements was the underlying murder mystery, which added a pulse-pounding urgency to the narrative. Twists and revelations kept me guessing, and I genuinely couldn’t predict the outcome. This unpredictability was refreshing in a genre where tropes can sometimes be formulaic.

Finally, I have to applaud the narration — absolute perfection! The voice work truly brought the characters to life and heightened the atmospheric tension throughout the story.

If you’re looking for a bewitching read that blends fantasy, intrigue, and unforgettable characters, "Dead & Lovely" should be at the top of your list. It left me eager for more and thrilled to have discovered such a gem just in time for the season of magic and mystery.
