The selection itself is fantastic. I have not yet got the hardback original, but I soon will. However, in the shortened paperback, a vivid and captivating image of Powell is brought to life that no biography - no matter how good Heffer's work was - could ever do unless they quoted verbatim. It goes through his parliamentary and political life, his personal life, his famed social stances which could surprise some, Ulster, defence and of course, his prophetic speeches on the EEC. The speeches are occasionally shortened, and indeed they do lack the context of the speech beforehand, but to Powell's credit, he does drill the context into you from the start.
His writing was acerbic, his speeches endearing and tense, and whilst I disapprove with him on some of his decisions, such as him leaving the Conservative party when he had a chance of taking it from Heath and his gang, I can only sympathise with him and he always gets me thinking. I am a Powellite and this selection only reaffirms such.
My only criticism, probably due to the selection being shortened, is that they did not include a few speeches on his views of the economy. His denunciation and the absolute reckoning he wreaked on the Price and Income policy of the Labour government, detailed in the selection 'Freedom & Reality', should've been included in this shortened selection, but I'll have to make do and will update on the hardback when I receive it. All in all, it's good.
