I am warning you right now do not start this until you have time to read the entire book and start the second one. Has my sleep this weekend suffered? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Between the story, the steam, and the suspense, I could not get enough of this book. Thank goodness book two is available to start immediately.

Bloom Town: Genesis by Ally North is nothing short of a masterpiece, and I can’t believe this is the author’s debut novel. I originally picked up the book because I was absolutely captivated by the cover, but after reading the synopsis, it became one of the fastest one-clicks of my life. And trust me, this book did not disappoint.
From the very first chapter, I was completely sucked in. North’s writing is eloquent, magical, and lyrical, bringing the Wild West to life with such vividness that I could feel the heat of the desert and the dust on my skin. This is so much more than just a romance novel—it’s an emotional journey filled with themes of family, freedom, and personal growth. North shows that the family you choose can bring more love and peace than the one you’re born into, and this found family is one of the most heartwarming aspects of the story.
The characters in Bloom Town: Genesis are beautifully flawed, perfectly imperfect, and impossible not to love. From Olive and Jack to my sweet, sweet Lewis, every character adds depth and warmth to the narrative. But let’s talk about Joey “JT London” Taylor, the complex outlaw who had me absolutely swooning. I have the BIGGEST crush on Joey—she’s brash, brooding, and utterly captivating. And then there’s Abby Proctor, who is just as wonderful. Watching Abby grow and step into her power throughout the book is one of the most satisfying character arcs I’ve read in a long time. Her evolution from a preacher’s daughter running from oppression to a woman embracing her desires and independence is incredible.
One of the things I loved most about this book is how North tackles deeper issues like prejudice and religious trauma. These themes are handled with tact and class, but readers should be aware they might find them triggering. Still, it’s clear North approached these topics with care, making the story even more impactful.
Now, let’s get to the steam. OMG—the spice in this book is *on fire*. From slow-burn sexual awakening to exploring sexuality, toys (no seriously), and even some very well-done dirty talk and praise kink (in a historical novel, no less—YES PLEASE), this book delivers on every level. The intimate scenes are not just hot, but meaningful, adding layers to Joey and Abby’s relationship. The sexual tension and emotional depth between them make for an unforgettable romance.
And I have to tell you that Bloom Town: Genesis is an emotional rollercoaster. I didn’t want it to end. But alas, it does… on a cliffhanger! So do yourself a favor and get book two when you pick up the first one because you’re going to want to dive right in after finishing this one. I cleared my entire weekend for this series, and it was totally worth it.
I also need to say how much I hope this book gets an audiobook. I would *love* to listen to these characters come to life again.

This started as a The Haunting of Bly Manor fan fiction, which I’d have loved on a fan fiction site. However, publishing it for profit without giving credit to the show feels wrong, especially when so many elements, like the characters and specific scenes (e.g., the kids’ theater show), are strikingly similar. I mean some things are virtually the same. I knew this was a Bly Manor fic just from Olive and Jack alone. A simple acknowledgment in the book’s credits could have gone a long way in showing that Ally North was honoring her inspiration rather than seeming to copy it.
It’s disappointing because the story itself has real potential. But the lack of credit to the show or its creators left a bad taste in my mouth, particularly since the original fan fiction was deleted after Bloom Town was published. I think Ally either should have acknowledged the shows writers for crafting the characters or make them different enough from the show that it wasn't obvious they were from there.
If I set that aside (reluctantly), and focus solely on the book, I did end up enjoying it, eventually. It took me a while to get there, though—literally about 70% of the way through—before I started to feel invested. I had to keep reminding myself that this story is spread across two books, so it's a very slow and intense burn.
I had such high hopes for this based on other reviews which is why I felt so let down by it. For most of the book, Joey was honestly awful. She was abusive and cruel to Abby, and while I understand she’s flawed and has her reasons, her moments of kindness often felt more like attempts to ease her own guilty conscience rather than genuine care.
The best part of this book for me was the reveal in Chapter 30—it was such a standout moment that it almost made the slow buildup worth it, almost.

“She didn’t want to see that poor animal, cursed by its own beauty, butchered and plated for consumption by small men made angry when beautiful things dared to exist outside of their possession.” (My jaw dropped when I read this)
Wow, that was a wild ride. The ending was such a cliffhanger I can’t not pick up the second one immediately. The only thing that bugged me a bit was that Abby immediately fell into bed with someone who literally kidnapped her. There was no lull period, or a short time where they got to know each other, and it felt a bit weird for her to sleep with her kidnapper right away. I looooved all of the characters and how kind they all really were given the situation. My heart ached for Abby, being punished and publicly humiliated by your own family because you were with a woman is just unimaginable. She’s never been able to live life for her, never being “free”.
The storyline was 5/5 though. It really brings to light how religion played such a huge part in the 1800s and how homosexuality was viewed as well as the realities of how life was during the westward expansion. Definitely worth reading!

Wow. 5 stars.
This was my first time reading a book that made me want to cry on several occasions from the shock and depth of the words written within.
Even beyond the sapphic romance (which btw was very well done and filled with such beautiful emotions), the MC makes us accompany her on her journey of discovery and search for freedom. And also, how what really matters is what we have here on earth, not heaven or hell, but the now.
It made me reflect with her, as mentioned a couple of times in the book; that if she didn't act in the moment, she would spend the rest of her life chasing the echo of what she could have had.
It was so nice to be able to grow so attached to all the characters, not just the MCs.
And I'm sure that it's a book that a lot of us queer people can relate to in some way.
I don't know if I'm overrating it, but it's definitely a new one on my list of favorite books.
I'm going to read the sequel immediately.

I'm going to read the second volume now, and after that, I'll probably write a more detailed review of it. But right now, I'm too overwhelmed with emotions to say anything other than that I absolutely fucking loved it, and it already has a special place in my heart.

Alright, I’ve finished the second book, so I can finally go back to my review of the first one.
First of all, let’s be clear: I’ve probably just read one of my favorite books of the year. And honestly, it immediately earns a special place in my heart. I’m creating a new shelf for the pantheon of my all-time favorite books, and this one is going straight in.
When it comes to romance and character chemistry, it’s just... *searches for words* … the absolute best.
I personally have a massive crush on Joey—I adore characters who make me laugh, are badass, and probably tortured as well. Abby is absolutely perfect too (and funny/clever, too). Honestly, she might just be the best character in the book. Which makes it hard for me to admit my crush on Joey. I’ll get back to these two characters more in my review of the second book.
As for the spicy level, these are probably the best scenes I’ve ever read. No notes. It was (for me) perfect. The balance of quantity, quality—everything was just masterfully done. The kind of book where you have to put it down for a second to collect yourself because, damn… 🤯 One of the spiciest books I’ve ever read.
Story-wise, it was perfect. Forced proximity is a trope I love, as well as enemies-to-lovers. There’s also a bit of grumpy/sunshine, with dark Joey and radiant Abby. The other characters are amazing too—perfectly balanced, engaging enough to keep you captivated the whole time.
In short, this first book is, in my eyes, an absolute masterpiece.

that the world wasn’t as simple as black and white and good and evil and outlaws and housewives, and perhaps it was possible to be kidnapped and rescued at the same exact time.

I am 100% in the minority here, so disregard this review if you want. This just didn't click for me.
What I liked:
Abby. I thought she was a great protagonist, and I really enjoyed seeing her grow over the course of the kidnapping and imprisonment and eventual freedom. I'm so glad she moved away from religion and found herself! Love that for her.
The beginning. It started with a bang, and it was really great to read.
Which leads me to Abby's and Joey's banter at the start. Good enemies to lovers energy. Unfortunately, that falls away when they start sleeping together.
What I didn't like:
While I did like Joey, her accent/the way it was written kept throwing me off. For example, in the UK, we can say shit, shite, or shat, depending on the tense/context. All she said was shite, often incorrectly, and it was just a little thing that kept annoying me.
The children. I'm not a fan of kids in general lol, and these two were 10 and 8 but read much older. I just didn't like it. Also, I've recently seen that this started life as a Bly Manor fanfiction, and I hated the annoying kids in that, which compounded my dislike of them in this.
I also didn't buy Abby's love. The book takes place over 2 weeks, yet we're supposed to believe Abby goes from hating Joey to loving her in that time, even with the whole kidnapping complication? It required too much suspension of disbelief for me.
It's unfortunate, as I was looking forward to this based on the great reviews. I'm so glad others enjoyed it!

So I really did enjoy this book. Much more than I even thought I would. I went into it a little apprehensive about all the high ratings but it honestly didn’t disappoint.
My main reasons for not giving this 5 stars are for editing and my suspension of disbelief. First, the kids. While I did love the kids, they never seemed like 8 and 10 year olds. I wish they had been written older for me to believe it. Plus, an 8 year old being able to expertly apply makeup and the fact that the kids went from being illiterate to writing a whole ass play two days later had my brain exploding. Another was that this 500 page book happens over 2 weeks. I just found it really hard to believe our girls would be in love that quickly. Especially with how their relationship started and all the baggage they had.
The editing was a whole other thing. I really wish North had had put some money towards that.
Also, I mostly listened to this as Quinn Riley narrated and she did an amazing job. Kudos to her. If I would have read this whole thing the editing would have bugged me even more. I definitely recommend listening to this one!

Audiobook - it was perfect
Third time i've read this. It just gets better. I reread this because my current TBR list has left me bored. Love LOVE this book - just as good a second time around. Hopefully an audiobook is on the horizon

What a story! What a well-written book! What a sexy, sapphic SPICY novel, my God! I am not a fan of books and movies that take place in the early days (1800's). I find them boring. Bloom Town Genesis, was nothing of the sort. Wonderful supporting characters, vivid imagery and a world setting that reminded me of a western themed Neverland from Peter Pan, this debut novel had a bit of everything. The best part - the sizzling chemistry between Abby and Joey - sweet Jesus (Sorry Abby). I have to say, Bloom Town had one of the best, if not the best, sapphic sexual scenario's I've ever read. I need a fan. Actually, I need an audiobook, like yesterday. I want to see what narrator can pull off those HOT sapphic scenes. I will be canceling my personal life, when the audiobook comes out. 5 stars, and 6 stars for spice. Bravo.

This book sucked me right in. It has vivid imagery of the wild west, unforgetable and quirky characters, clever banters, steamy love story. Fortunately, I've discovered this when book 2 is already out so I could dive right into the next part.

Bloom Town: Genesis is... I don't even know where to start. I was absolutely blown away from this novel. I could not put it down. I only slept 4 hours because I needed to keep reading. The characterization is particularly compelling. I couldn't help but fall in love with the main cast of characters. The pacing was good, and the spice was spicing (but more on that later...).
The story is told in third person from Abby's point of view broken up by letters written by Joey (so the reader can glean a bit of her perspective). The main plot point is: While Abby is traveling via train to meet with her husband in California (where he has been establishing a town over the past two year), she is kidnapped by outlaws. In comes Joey, a rough around the edges outlaw whose motivation is ransom money. Like all good stories, there is more than meets the eye when it comes to Joey as well as Abby. As their story unfolds, it quickly becomes apparent they are both trying to escape circumstances of their fates and end up finding a sort of escape in each other.
The real strength in this book is the characters. They are so, so loveable, and the diversity (particularly in a western) is appreciated. There is disability rep and BIPOC rep. The story doesn't hesitate to call to light the negatives of the time period, and I loved Abby's character development as her perspective changes with new information (yet her ignorance is apparent). Also, I love Joey. I just have to say it. If you're in the market for a new book crush...
As for the spice, you ask? Possibly some of the best I've ever read. It felt fresh, real, and not scripted/expected. Like these women are downright desperate for each other, and it shows. I'm not afraid to admit that I've gone back and re-read some of my favorite scenes. They caught me off guard and felt so genuine. I hardly have the words to express the feelings I felt while reading those parts of this book. Also, the backstory of both characters as well as the dialogue between the characters softens the ick-factor of the kidnapping aspect (I read dark romances, but I wouldn't consider this in the same vein).
I loved this book so much, I started the second one immediately (and will be sharing my review for Exodus soon). Heed the warning that you should clear out your calendar and lock yourself away to finish this series because they are hard to put down. I really hope the author writes some more books like this because I need more in my life, desperately. I highly, highly recommend this book, and I imagine it will have a permanent place on my favorites list.

It's impossible not to get hooked from the first chapter. North's writing is immersive, with clear descriptions of the western settings in 1852 and of the characters' emotions. The reader follows Abby, the MC, who gets abducted. I felt everything with her: fear, rage, attraction, and then... so much more. What I like most is when emotions are not one-dimensional. Abby's emotions are always a mixture of complicated feelings, but always filled with passion. You know a writer is good when it's written in a single POV and you can still guess the other character's emotions with subtlety. Well, North nailed it. Joey and Abby's relationship development was full of passion, tainted with resentment at first, and evolved to something more. I didn't expect the book to be so steamy but holy s... that was intense. I didn't expect to find myself googling "sex toys in 1850". I just found it very rude they didn't watch the children's play properly😝. North really takes us into the bubble of Wry with supporting characters whom you can only fall in love with, too. Olive is simply adorable, and if something happens to her, I will break my Kindle. Okay, I won't, but I will be really mad. The way the truth and Joey's past were revealed throughout the book was done brilliantly.
With Quinn Riley's perfect narration, those 16h40min felt too short. It was simply an amazing audiobook.
Well, to summarize, that book totally deserves its hype.
Now excuse me, but the way the book ends, it's impossible not to jump right away on book two.

This book had a reputation. It was hyped up a lot especially on bookstagram. And I get it. I get why it’s a fan favourite.
The setting was amazing. I was in the desserti, in the heat and coyotes and insects. The characters were very memorable. I was taken by Olive and her grown-up way of speaking and thinking. She was the most remarkable for me.
The whole story in general was multifaceted. Diving into issues that still plague our society nowadays. There’s homophobia, the patriarchy, religious abuse, colonisation, there’s probably more but I can’t think of them now. It’s…. an experience, to read this book, that’s for sure. Spice? At some point I was wondering if this book could be classified as erotica.

This is a very solid book. The world building and the setting descriptions were superb. There are also some extremely poignant points about deconstructing from fundamentalism and the damage that the evangelical church does to LGBTQ people, me included.
I couldn’t help but root for Joey and Abby. The relationship they develop is smoking hot and the spice is ridiculously spicy. There’s even a toy involved, just go with it. It’s worth it. I have a few nit picky things that bothered me, particularly with the language usage, but not enough to take a star away. Now excuse me while I go start Bloom Town: Exodus.

An absolutely incredible listen! Fantastic storytelling, compelling characters and perfect narration.
This is absolutely narrator Quinn Riley’s best work, placing her firmly in the top tier. She does some amazing accent work and glides seamlessly through a variety of ages and genders.
With just her first sapphic release, Ally North becomes the new author to watch.
I can’t wait to read or listen to Bloom Town Exodus!

the story and the writing was amazing! i truly think the only thing that threw me off was how long this book was. i wanted to love it, but based off the pacing i just couldn’t bring myself to give this a higher rating. once a story begins to drag for me, it has about 20% more of the book to redeem itself and unfortunately i almost put this one down because of it. other than that, I love The characters in this book, I can see why so many others loved the book as a whole

i’m kinda struggling with this one. i was really really excited to read because i’d literally only heard good things, but without even knowing in the first place, i could tell this was self-published and/or a fanfiction first. let me clarify that i dont think there’s anything wrong with self-publishing or fanfiction, but as someone who has read/written a lot of fanfiction myself, it kind of put me off. because i’m reading a book, but it feels like a fanfiction, and i’m like ???
this really could’ve used an editor. a huge pet peeve of mine is the use of the passive voice. so for example, a line said “Olive was staring out the window” or “There was a clawing feeling spreading throughout Abby” when it’s just a lot simpler to say “Olive stared out the window” or “A clawing feeling spread throughout Abby”. i noticed this EVERY time it happened, and my brain tried to overwrite it and i got distracted. i’m not necessarily ANTI passive voice, people speak in passive voice all the time, but outside of dialogue, it just makes for extra work that could be condensed down to something that makes more sense. idk 🤷🏼♀️ and some plot points felt contrived
i do intend to read the second book because i bought both thinking i wouldnt be able to put it down. maybe a few other books first that i’ll enjoy more. I’m disappointed i didnt enjoy this more!! i really think this author could make some amazing stories with a proper editor/publisher!!

This book guys this damn book!
I couldn’t put it down for the life of me. I swear I spent whole day consumed in this story. I was so immersed with the characters and the setting that I felt as if I was a fly in Wry. Buzzing around and observing these people, wishing to be manifested as a person so I can interact with them in this world. It all felt so real .
The way everything was built up so well! The dynamics and this world. It makes me mad how good it was, every chapter I digested I was hungry for more. Call me Joey the way she be hungry for—

When I reached the end I was wrecked and hurried to buy and read the sequel! Heart still beating fast in worry of what the hell was going to happen after all the twists my heart was tugged into.
Only reason why I dropped a star was because from the start, Olive reminds me of the little girl from ‘The Haunting of Bly Manor’ and yes, I love it so much! The comparison can be seen during the “theater” part and just how they act. Olive being so sweet with her big fancy words and Jack with his masking and anger issues. But then I seen someone saythis was originally a fanfic (which is totally fine!) but then at end when I realized the author didn’t acknowledge her inspiration of the show or creator, I felt disappointed of the do wrong from such a stellar of a writer and creative.. (if I’m wrong, correct me on that).
Besides all, this is a book I’ll be buying hard copy of to reread and mark with all types of highlighting’s and perfectly splendid words in the margins ;)

With all the high ratings from my mutuals and the religious theme in a western setting(!), I knew I had to read this book. So I finally did. And I get why so many people like this novel. It’s thrilling and sexy and triumphant. But it’s also a big mess.
Okay, so here’s what worked for me:
- Abby! Abby is a wonderful character. I liked her vulnerability (and her comfort in her vulnerability), her courage, her determination. I do question her romantic inclinations in this book, but I liked her enough—and the journey she was on—to overlook it.
- The twist. I did not see that coming and it really added a layer of intrigue that shot some life into the last part of the novel.
- The kids and Lewis. Great side characters even if the kids sounded and acted way too old for their actual ages. I thought they were great characters.
What didn’t work for me:
- Joey. Ugh. What happened there? How did Ally North get Joey so wrong? I don’t get.
- The romance. Obviously if Joey doesn’t work for me, the romance won’t either. Yes, the Stockholm Syndrome is definitely an issue. But I think it would have worked if Joey as a character works, but she doesn’t hold to scrutiny.
- The ending, which I won’t elaborate on for reasons of spoilers, but it didn’t work for me.
- The religious aspect. I get extreme religiosity but it was a bit over the top for me. It was too easily made a villain here and I felt it was a bit lazy.
- The two-week period this entire book takes place in, wherein a lot of really improbable things happen, e.g. kids go from illiterate to completely literate pretty much instantly? Nah.
This novel is also long, which I don’t honestly mind, but I did feel the pacing was off. But it was a fun read. I'm sure I will read the next novel.

Omg 😭 it’s been a longggg time since I’ve read a book that gripped me in its clutches like this one did. I was completely enthralled. From the found family aspect to the insane, toe curling smut, this book was perfect. This book perfectly executed enemies to lovers, the tension and banter was spot on from the start. I really loved reading Abby’s journey with religious trauma and internalized homophobia. It was realistic and heartbreaking. And can we talk about Joey??!! That woman could shoot me and I’d say thank you. Joey is my new book gf. Joey if you’re reading this, my wife and I are free whenever 🤣 5/5 stars, a million stars if I could!

I could not put this book down, it was so good! The characters, plot, and setting were well written. And there was so much chemistry between the leads, I loved it!

3.5 stars. A really fun, engrossing and often intense f/f historical romance that I really liked. But I'm so frustrated by all the things that are holding me back from rating it even higher. This has so much promise, but it fumbles in just a couple ways that are hard to ignore. Still, there's more good than bad, and I'm glad that I tried it.
Abby is a preacher's daughter, recently married off. She's travelling to meet her husband in the new town he founded when she's kidnapped off the train by a small, fierce gang of criminals: two kids, a gentle giant, and the outlaw woman, Joey, who leads them. They take her to stay in their hideout ghost town while waiting for the ransom to be delivered. This was such a fun read! The early parts of it especially kept me turning the pages non-stop. I love a captor/captive romance, and my absolute favourite parts of the book were in the early stages, where Joey and Abby kept butting heads. I loved that Abby was so furious and headstrong, and kept doggedly trying to free herself, and kept making Joey really work to keep her under control. But of course, there's the eventual thawing on both sides. I really liked how Abby bonded with the kids first, how she managed to get through to Lewis in ways that even Joey couldn't, and how she quickly made herself a part of their lives. I liked the idea of Wry, even though the logistics of how they would be able to set up the town like that... idk if it's all that believable.
The build up of the romance was reallllllly good. The way the animosity eventually melts away is so delicious. The author did a great job of writing that romantic tension, and the moment it surged into something more. I loved that they almost always felt like equals, except the the clear moments when Joey had the upper hand. While the enemies portion was great, it was so lovely when that evolved into gentleness and teaching and teasing. Neither character ever lost their spark or their edge, but they grew into each other. So many things about how the romance was written, their growing feelings for each other, all that intense emotion... I adored it. Great banter, which is essential in any romance. I liked all the historical details, though a few phrases and words felt anachronistic. I wish Abby's journey with unlearning the church's lessons had had a bit more nuance and less heavy-handedness, but it was still a lovely message. Especially in the moments we got to see Joey carrying her through it.
The book falls down in two major ways. The first is the pacing. The entire book takes place in two weeks, and that is just not realistic. No way. For a captor/captive romance, especially one where, in the beginning, Abby is fighting like hell to get away from Joey. We're supposed to believe that she changes her mind in a few days, gets romantic feelings in a week, and is in love at the end of two weeks? Makes nooooo sense. It makes even less sense when you consider that Abby starts teaching the kids to read, and they're well on their way to literacy in a few days?? Look, I don't doubt that they're extremely clever kids, but that just beggars belief. I really don't know why the timeline couldn't have been stretched out to two months. Even one month! I love that the book is long, and I loved that we really drew out the days Abby spent at Wry. All that page time gives the reader a sense of those developing relationships, between Abby and Lewis, the kids and Joey. But it still didn't feel like long enough, especially for the romantic feelings that the author was trying to convince me of, and I kept thinking about that, all while I was reading.
The second major flaw is the editing. It feels like it wasn't edited at all. Or if it was, it wasn't done well, especially with regard to punctuation. I promise I really do try to ignore that stuff when I'm reading indie books, but in this case, I couldn't. Every time the author wrote dialogue, I felt like I was getting punched in the face, because the punctuation was almost always wrong. Periods where there should have been commas, commas where there should have been periods, doubling up on question marks and commas, weird em dash use, run on sentences, wrong capitalisation, and so much more... it drove me up a wall. I was reading this book and ITCHING to edit it. The punctuation was so bad. I wish I could be the type of person who doesn't lower ratings for stuff like this, but alas! I am who I am, and this REALLY annoys me.
Oh, and this isn't a major flaw, but it did bug me. I loved the intimate scenes in this; they were really sexy and intense. But the book unlocked a new pet peeve for me:
Despite my complaints, I do think this was really good. I knew there would be a twist coming, but I didn't predict exactly what it would be. Though not all of the ending conflict was completely my speed, I did enjoy it, and I look forward to completing the duet. I'll probably take a break before reading the next book, though. Seriously, the bad punctuation makes this HARD to read, and I can't take it right now. But I guess you can count that as a point in the book's favour. Despite that huge hurdle, (for me) I still completed it.
It was a piece of buckshot lodged inside her heart, and if she could she would plunge her own hand into her chest and pull the unwanted piece out, give it back to Joey, tell her she didn’t want it. That she couldn’t survive it.
