Interesting overview of the history of the ancient world from 4,600 million years ago to 1500 A.D. The book is a large coffee table style book with lots of photographs illustrating highlights from a big chunk of ancient history. Despite the title, only one page is actually devoted to 4600 million years ago, then it jumps right to a 410 million years ago. The first two chapters give the highlights of origins of life with interesting photos of fossil remains and artwork of the earliest forms of pl ...more

One of the coolest history books ever. Lets you know what was going on everywhere else while this or that well-known event, like the fall of Rome, was getting all the publicity. While this book was published 20 years ago, it is still a good source for how our world developed.

It is, because of much newer research, lacking in North American archaeology. However, I learned a LOT from reading this book. It is dense with information it is a big, oversized book. Thus it took me over 2 weeks to read it. But it was well worth the effort.

Not bad for $7.99 from Goodwill!
