The American Pageant: A History of the Republic to 1877

American Pageant is the best US textbook we've used with secondary school students; the fact that it's in two paperback volumes is very considerate for the students

A little bit too much personal opinion by the author for my taste.

Very interesting. Good to read this along with the other books on my list.

I have to admit, I found this text a bit dense when covering the material during high school. But revisiting it a few decades later, I found its coverage and breadth fascinating. I'd highly recommend both volumes to any history buffs and anyone simply interested in a high-quality narrative of America's evolution.

Tries to turn everything in a story. I was skeptical of the quality of this book when I read it (I used it twice in High School) and am more so now after reading Lies My Teacher Told Me . Give this one a pass if you can and find a quality history textbook elsewhere.
