Ztracený svět

Rate this book

A graphic novel version of the classic Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s story, The Lost World; what does it bring different to the story? A steampunk vibe, an attempt to be a bit more humorous and a more exaggerated interpretation in the art style.

The story pretty much follows the original: Professor Challenger has a secret map to a plateau in the Amazon, that has provided an isolated ecosystem that has allowed prehistoric animals to survive. To prove this isn't a hoax, Challenger organises an expedition to the tabletop mountain. With him leading the expedition he is accompanied by: his rival, Professor Summerlee, adventurer Lord Roxton and to document the trip, reporter Edward Malone. After trekking through the Amazonian rainforest they discover the plateau. Ascending to the top, they get trapped (in this version by Malfunctioning servant robots) destroying the only way down. Now they find themselves, isolated on this Lost World with dinosaurs and other prehistoric dangers, and must find a way to survive and escape.

Besides the steampunk tech in places, the more exaggerated character design and puts on dinosaur nerd hat a change of dinosaur species from ones on the original (Megalosaurus) to ones that are more in pop culture (like Tyrannosaurus Rex); this was a pretty faithful retelling.

The writing is decent and the art style matches the story well. I liked how while the character designs had a more comic book feel to them, the dinosaur designs had a more realistic tone compared to the characters. The humour while not amazing, is enough not to be irritating and goes well with the style of story.

I get the feeling, there's some kind of shared universe, with the author’s other graphic novels (he's written Sherlock Holmes graphic novels) because spoiler Moriarty turns up in the book’s ‘after credit’ sequence, but you haven't got to have read those or carry on afterwards.

A nice retelling of this story; nothing spectacular and not atrocious; but just a nice enjoyable, easy read.

I enjoyed the story, however the version I’ve read contained many racist terms which I did not appreciate.
Overall it is quite fun to read it

The Lost World by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Graphic Novel by Petr Korl

The story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s other hero, Professor George Edward Challenger and his trip to Maple White land.

Challenger has been to the area of Maple White Land, which Challenger named for an explorer that he had found dying. He named the man Maple White and the inaccessible plateau after the explorer, who has somehow been there.

Unable to reach the plateau, Challenger must rely on photographs to back his claims. He is ridiculed, and when his temper makes him last out, he is barred from the Royal Scientific Institute.

An enterprising reporter named Edward Malone manages an interview with Professor Challenger. Challenger challenges the Royal Scientific Institute to mount an expedition back to Maple White Land to prove his findings.

Professor Summerlee accepts the challenge but won’t allow Challenger to go. The expedition is financed by Lord John Roxton and Edward Norton goes along to report on the mission. But it isn’t easy to give Professor Challenger the slip!

The tremendous novel that introduces the reader to Professor George Edward Challenger—brilliant, apelike, powerfully muscled, and short tempered—is recreated here in this graphic novel.

The artwork is whimsical, but the story for the most part goes along with the book. There will be a twist or two that may surprise the reader, but trust me, they are great!

I enjoyed the original novel (a reprint, of course!) and this graphic novel is a joy to read. I will give this GN five stars. Petr Kopl has other graphic novels available, and I hope to read them all!

Stratený svet - príbeh o expedícii do amazonského pralesa, kde na vyvýšenej náhornej plošine prežila fauna a flóra z úsvitu dejín zeme zaujal už množstvo tvorcov, ktorí ho pretavili do viacerých filmov, seriálov, či komiksov.
