Really well done! Of course, I had to read it to the kids like it was Philip Marlowe (Humphrey Bogart)!

Another hilarious Joe Dumpty investigation full of wise cracks, puns and Easter eggs. The pictures are so funny, the three little pigs have a construction company and Spider combs the grass area for evidence. The mysterious case of the crown is set up by Jack losing his crown when he tumbled down the hill and scrambled his brains. Joe Dumpty helps out Jill because he's a soft shell for damsels in distress. Joe Dumpty goes around town frying in the heat to figure out where the crown is before the

LOVE this book! LOVE, love, love it. The witty humor, the puns, the ideas are all just wonderful. This is definitely one I want to use in my classroom, first, just for the fun of reading it, and second because of the way the language is used. My students can see that crafting a story that uses great figurative language and inferences and double meanings, etc. can be done when you take the time to continue to revise your work until you get something really great. This is one of those great books ...more

This would make for a great read aloud in the primary grades (late kinder or first and second) - at the end of or as part of a unit of study on nursery rhymes/fairy tales. The egg-shaped detective Joe Dumpty is searching for Jack's missing crown which leads him to several other "Jacks." In other words, children have to have some understanding of Jack and Jill, Humpty Dumpty, Jack Be Nimble, Jack and the Beanstalk and so forth to "get" how the author is playing with language and developing the st ...more

Anyone who loved What REALLY Happened to Humpty? will enjoy this mystery featuring several Mother Goose characters. When Jack loses his crown on a trip up the hill with Jill, Joe Dumpty, Private Investigator, takes on the case. As he follows clues that lead him from one Jack to another, he finally solves the case amid all sorts of puns and word play having to do with his egg-shaped existence. Adults will enjoy this one just as much as their offspring. Both will find plenty of interesting details ...more

Adults will love this picture book from the "files of a hard-boiled detective" who is Humpty Dumpty's brother. The puns and the references to the old hard-boiled detectives of the Sam Spade ilk made it a fun read. Ransom has walked a tightrope here: children will love the story without getting those references while their parents will get a kick out of it too. It reminded me of watching the original Muppet movie with my son. He loved it and I loved the things that Henson sent right over the head ...more

Humorous sequel to What Really Happened to Humpty? featuring many characters from classic nursery rhymes. Jack loses his crown before the Gooseland Games and Private Investigator Joe Dumpty is on the case!

This is a fun picture book mystery and there are not many in this genre. Kids who know their folktales will love the twists and turns on classic nursery rhymes. Sometimes, though, so much effort was put into clever jokes that it was hard to keep track of the mystery.

Just before the Mother Gooseland Games, hard-boiled detective Joe Dumpty is called upon to solve the mystery of what made Jack and Jill fall down the hill--and who took Jack's prized crown after the fall.

Personally, I really liked it, but it was definitely too long. Read it with the 3/4s and they enjoyed it but also thought it was quite long. Might try reading it with the 4/5s.

This picture book, and the one that preceded it, made me laugh. A great mash-up of nursery rhymes, with witty dialogue.

Excellent for teaching parody, puns, and allusions, but the story was too long to hold attention beyond the initial delight of its premise.
