And the saga continues...
We continue to see the very deep plot being woven, and the bodies are piling up along the way.
I still think this is too similar to the original series, as I would rather have read some adventures of Daigoro as an adult with maybe flashbacks to his childhood. I continue to be amazed by the art. When the original artist passed away I wouldn't have though anyone could capture the spirit of a series like this. However, it's been done. If someone had told me it was the same artist, I may now have been able to tell the difference.
Still good, even if it feels a little derivative...

I thought nothing could come close to the original Lone Wolf and Cub, but this new one is sometimes even better. And I do enjoy the Glossary, which I did not have in the first series, 20 some years ago.

If you can get over the slightly-too-convenient plot contrivance at the start of this sequel series, that another master swordsman would happen to come along at the right time to take Ogami Itto's place, then otherwise this continues to be a solid continuation. As in the first volume, there are some poignant moments for readers of the original series as elements of that are laid to rest and we look ahead to developing Daigoro's character.
Hideki Kojima's art style moves slightly closer to Goseki Kojima's here - specifically when there are flashbacks to the past. I can only imagine how daunting it must have been for Kojima having to draw such an iconic character as Ogami Itto in action. I also realise now that Kojima's drawing style reminds me of Ryoichi Ikegami's work on Crying Freeman - which as it happens, Kazuo Koike wrote.
Again these volumes are quite short (shorter even than the original small-format LW&C volumes), so it's still hard to say much about the story itself. It might not feel like a totally necessary sequel, but it's doing just about everything right at this stage.

Beautiful to look at. These books are a true classic. The line work in the art is so precise and delicate that you can just look at images sometimes and wonder at the art of it.
The story telling is so slowly paced as well. There is background here but they are taking their own sweet time in telling you what it is. Sometimes the action will stop and there will be focus on subtle shifts of stance. It can take a little getting used to but it is worth it because the action is brilliant.
I also love the detail of the background and the society. Everything is so meticulously done that even if it turns out its not accurate it doesn't matter. It feels authentic and accurate and that is what counts.

Still very much in setup mode, but here we start to see more of Daigoro, and to understand the new foes and the political machinations that will shape the new series ongoing.
