In the eyes of an imaginative boy, his dog becomes a seal when he is slick with soap, a billy goat when he chews the mail, a croc when he crouches beneath the table stalking a crumb, and other animals.
Rosen's Website should provide all this and more. It's http://www.fidosopher.com. Nonetheless: Michael J. Rosen is an American author and illustrator with over 120 books of fiction, nonfiction, humor, picture books, poetry, and more. With a strong interest in nature and animals, reflecting his animal behavior degree from Ohio State University, Rosen resides within a peaceful crease of Central Ohio with his pack of animal companions that include 2 small koi ponds he helped build on the 100 acres he shares in the foothills of the Ohio Appalachians. An avid dog lover, he was inspired by Chant, his newest Australian stumpy-tail cattle dog, which led to the creation of his newest book of fiction, The Tale of Rescue, which will be released in October 2015. With an MFA in poetry from Columbia University, Rosen also showcases his skills and talents in other projects such as The Maine Coon’s Haiku: And Other Poems for Cat Lovers (2015).
It is hard to believe the author and illustrator are not the same person because the illustrations embrace the idea and so perfectly enliven the text to produce an amazing book.
My only disappointment was that I thought it was a bit jarring to have the whole book be about this wonderful dog, and then the last page to have the boy suddenly spring out as the star! We discussed this in my picture book group and I am the only one who felt that way. As my friends pointed out, the title calls for that last page. It just seemed like a non sequitur to me. ------------------------ Reading this review again, I realize that on another level the book is only peripherally about the dog and actually about the boy's creativity and imagination, therefore the last page is just right. Kudos to Michael Rosen for making me think!
First Line: "My dog is a purebred golden retriever."
amazing artwork and story that goes hand in hand! Great book for those kids who just love their animals and are able to relate to them better than people
A young boy uses his imagination to transform his dog into a variety of other animals. The boy realizes “with a dog like that” he can do anything.
This is another adorable book geared towards 4-8 year olds. The illustrations show a gradual transformation of the dog becoming other animals which helps the younger reader to see what the boy in the story sees.
My husband I just got our first puppy, Zoe, in July. We swear that she is part rabbit, part billy goat, and that she secretly longs to be a duck or a bird! I guess adults can transform their pets with a little imagination too!!
"With a Dog Like That, a Kid Like Me..." is a sweet sweet children's book, inviting it's readers to use their imaginations with beautiful illustrations. This book can be used to explore different animals and open a discussion on the possibility of becoming ... anything you truly want to be.
Michael J. Rosen and Ted Rand have provided a platform from which to soar into the world of creativity. Every time we read this book, a new possibility appears for my daughter, showing her how much she could be and giving me insights into who she would like to be.
This is a cute book, however, maybe there should be more to it? It shows a relationship between a little boy and his golden retriever. To him the dog is more than just a dog, he can be anything. As an adult I can understand how much the dog means to the boy, but to children is the story pointless?
A boy describes how his dog is like other animals. The children loved looking at the pictures and informing me what animal the dog was acting like. Ends with a positive message that the kid can be anything he truly wants to be.
