I'm the author of forty+ books for children, including the best-selling Twas the Evening of Christmas, I Wonder: Exploring God's Grand Story, The Wonder That is You, and six popular series: Love Letters from God, Snuggle Time, Little Mole, Twas, Good News and Bedtime Blessings.
Here's my little story...

Although I live in Michigan, USA, I was born and raised in a little village in northern England.

I grew up in a big old house, with two wonderful parents and seven siblings. My dad was the one who introduced me to the gospel. My mum was the one who encouraged me to work with children.

And at primary school, my teacher was the one who urged me to write. One day a week, I was one of the lucky few withdrawn from the classroom to sit in big, comfy armchairs in the teachers' lounge. There, in front of a roaring log fire, with pencil and paper at the ready, I would write.

Four long decades later, I would find myself living across the pond, married to a wonderful man, mum to four adult children and three daughters-in-law, and grandma to three bouncing boys and one gorgeous girl. And as if all that wasn’t blessing enough, I somehow became an author, despite giving up on my first book halfway through.

And if you would have told me then, that this book would one day become a series, that I would begin a second series, and a third… I never would have believed you. The only possible explanation is that our great God is able to do immeasurably more than all I could ever ask or possibly imagine.

And to God alone, be the glory.

Love Letters from God is the newest bible storybook from Zonderkidz and author Glenys Nellist. Illustrated by Sophie Allsopp, this 38 page storybook has a delightful scrapbook and felt story board look. The vibrant, eye-catching illustrations are the highlight of this text. Readers may also enjoy the interactive lift-the-flap “Love Letters From God.” Using an approach made popular by Sarah Young’s Jesus Calling devotional, Nellist personalizes the promises of God for children. Here are a few messages that I enjoyed from this storybook to my children:

“Even though they had disobeyed God, He never stopped loving them.”

“...if you say you’re sorry and trust me, the most wonderful thing will happen - I will not remember your sins!”

“...try to remember that you are never alone. I promise I will never, ever leave you.”

“...I sent my Son Jesus...So He could show you what a precious and wonderful love I have for you.”

“When you are afraid, remember - Jesus will be holding your hand.”

There are many children’s bible story books on the market and I tend to be overly scrupulous. This being said, I want to make note of a few issues that I had with this book. The first was in the story of Noah where Nellist writes “...a flood would cover the earth and clean it.” This may seem trivial, but I want my children to know that the flood was meant to cleanse the earth of sinful people. It was God’s judgement on the wickedness of man. The second hang-up that I had was with the feeding of 5,000 taken from John 6. In this storybook the young boy with the loaves and fish is named Nathan. I searched through a few different translations and found him referred to as: a young boy (NLT, NIV), a boy (HCSB, ESV), a lad (KJV, ASB), but did not find any mention of him by name. Furthermore, In the story of Daniel in the Lion’s Den the author has written, “Those lions closed their big mouths, closed their big eyes, and fell into a deep, deep sleep,” but scripture quotes Daniel as saying “My God sent his angel and shut the lions' mouths, and they have not harmed me, because I was found blameless before him...” (Daniel 6:22) Which is more amazing? My final qualm with the text comes in the story of David and Goliath - perhaps because this is my daughter’s favorite. When comparing David and Goliath the author writes, “David ate porridge for breakfast; Goliath ate squirrels.” Huh?

As beautiful as the illustrations were and as much as I enjoyed the personalized “Love Letters from God,” the cons outweighed the pros for this reviewer-mom and I give Love Letters from God three stars.

About the Book:

What child does not love to receive mail? What if that child could receive, open and read his or her own personal mail from God? The Love Letters from God will invite them to do just that! Accompanying each story in this unique children s Bible is a very special and encouraging letter, each tucked away in its own lift-the-flap envelope, just for them. Written for children ages four to eight, the Love Letters from God includes eighteen of the most popular Bible stories nine from the Old Testament and nine from the New Testament.

Following each story the child will find his or her own letter from God. Children will love the excitement of opening the letters and parents will love how each letter elaborates on the Bible story being told. A very special Bible verse, entitled God s Wonderful Words To You will accompany each story and letter. Much more than a mere memory verse, each carefully chosen promise will be God s very own personal words of love, encouragement, and hope. This book will culminate in an invitation for the children to write their own RSVP to God."

About the Author:

Glenys Nellist was born and raised in a little village in northern England. Her stories and poems have been published in children's magazines where her writing reflects a deep passion for bringing the Bible to life for young children. Glenys lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with her husband, David.

My Review:

First of all, I love the premise of this book! This book is a collection of 18 Bible stories that illuminate God's word and creates a sensation in young children to know their Father more intimately. Included with each story is a love letter from God written to each child that is reading the book. There is a place in the letter for the parent to fill in the child's name, so the child will feel even more special.

My favorite story in the book was that of Samuel's call. It is the epitome of the verse, "I will send for you by name. You belong to me." Isaiah 43:1. The love letter that accompanies this story is such a sweet reminder to the child that God will call to them one day as well. It's just a sweet sentiment that will bring each child who reads from the book or that is read to that they are truly unique and special in God's eyes and that, that will never change. To top it all off there is an invitation to the child from God in the back of the book and a place for the child to write a love letter to God as well.

The author has written such a sweet book to help any child from the ages of 4-8 very loved! I loved the book and you will too! If you would like to purchase the book you can at this link.

We love this Bible stories book! This picture book-style Bible storybook is presented beautifully in colorful hardback with an almost scrapbook-like appearance. Each spread includes a retelling of a Bible story, a short focus verse, and a lift-the-flap “love letter” from God.
The stories are paraphrased for the 4-8 age range and include emotional aspects in the retellings that allow readers to relate to the characters and events. Each story focuses on how the character learned from God and how God remains present in our lives no matter what circumstances may arise. A few of the details are left out of some stories (example: the creation story doesn’t detail the days of creation), but that doesn’t take away from the themes themselves. The focus verses are very appropriate and all short enough to be used as memory verses for even the preschool audience. The “love letters” are elegantly designed to look like envelopes on the outside and a one-paragraph letter from God to the reader on the inside. Each letter has an opening line, allowing you to write the reader’s name in to personalize each letter. These letters summarize the focus of each Bible story sufficiently.
The illustrations are colorful, vibrant, and uniquely arranged on each spread. The book ends with an “invitation” to the reader to “join Jesus’s team” and a blank letter to allow the reader to write a “love letter” back to God. This storybook is a lovely addition to a family or church library.

About the Book:

In this heart-warming picture book designed for girls, author Glenys Nellist tells the inspiring stories of incredible women in the Bible. With beautiful illustrations by Rachel Clowes and sweet lift-the-flap envelopes, each story delivers a special message for children to open as they read their own personal love letters from God. Full of warmth and love, this picture book will fill girls’ hearts with the wonder of the Lord. The stories of Eve, Miriam, Rahab, Mary, and many more will delight children and remind them of the bond they can share with God, just like the women of the Bible.

My Review:

It's few and far between these days that you can find encouragement for young girls. These days things are centered around treating them in not a Godly way. But thankfully, there are still some people out there like Glenys Nellist that still write what God has laid on their hearts to share with young girls. My daughter is grown now but she never tires of reading the author's books and we hope to share with her daughters one day the love that God has for them.

In this lift-the-flap-book, you can find stories of young girls from the Bible that will lift up and encourage the young girls of today. These girls fought to do right by the Almighty and God allowed them to win that fight. I like to think that God is more than a little partial to us girls. He says such great things to us. He loves us all and only wishes the best for us. A great inspiring read for ages 4-8 but momma liked it too!

One of my favorite quotes from this beautiful picture book is, "God clapped his hands in delight as Eve opened her eyes for the very first time." Inside you will discover 14 inspiring stories about these amazing women of God, such as 'The Trusting Girl,' 'The Brave Girl,' and 'The Hopeful Girl.' Ages 4-8 will be delighted to engage in a fun hands-on activity of lifting the flap to read a personal warm and loving message from God. The charming illustrations are filled with wonder, beauty, and peace. The entire book is bathed in sweetness for your little girl. I highly recommend this charming book for all home and Sunday School libraries. Guaranteed to touch your heart and be encouraged in His love.

I love this book. Glenys has chosen several wonderful stories about women, in the Bible, to retell. She's written each one in easy to understand language and shows that God values girls as the daughters he's created. The lift-the-flap letters from God are encouraging and uplifting. Rachel's artwork is just lovely. The colors, drawings, and ephemera she uses to create each piece goes beautifully with each girl's story. As my daughters grew up I wanted them to know that God loved them and valued them. This book is a great place to start if you want to encourage young ladies in their relationship with God. I will share these heartwarming stories with my granddaughters.

Love Letters From God has been updated and is even better than before. Both books are lovely, beautifully written and illustrated for children ages 4 - 8.

Attending a catholic elementary school, I enjoyed learning Bible stories. Even though I knew these stories, Glenys wrote them in a such a way it held my attention. I like the liberties she took to make a point in a few of the stories. I also love how Glenys’s biblical stories are written in an easy, understandable way for children to listen. At the end of each story, God pens a beautiful love letter to each child making them feel special, and lessons they can apply to their every day life: God’s Wonderful Word to You.

The best gift you can give a young person is that God will always love them, and be there with them in every situation. Knowing this will strengthen their personal journey in life.

In one book there is a blank letter for a child to write their own personal message to God. In the other, a child is encouraged to write a letter to God.

Children will enjoy hearing the stories in Love Letters From God over and over again.

Thank you Glenys Nellist for the gifted copy of your book for my honest review.

A girls heart is utterly precious. It longs to know and feel love. To know that she is cherished. Especially by God. As I've been curating my daughter's book collection, I have been searching for books that will help her to know those things instinctively. When we stumbled across Snuggle Time Psalms by Glenys Nellist, I knew we were on to something! Then we got to read Christmas Love Letters from God: Bible Stories and I was completely in love with Nellist's writing.

Getting the chance to read Love Letters from God; Bible Stories for a Girl’s Heart has been an exciting addition to our book collection. Nellist has taken the stories of 14 girls in the Bible and retells them in the most beautiful way. Each story is steeped in scripture, even though the story is told in new words. Without dumbing down the story, Nellist makes it approachable for young girls. I've even learned a few things!

Though the book is written for ages 4-8, my daughter, at 2, was able to grasp the overarching theme of the stories. As I read her one the "Love Letter From God," she was able to repeat unprompted the message of the letter.

The illustrations in this book are bright and engaging. I love the uniqueness on each page, and they capture my attention quickly! My daughter loves to look at the details in the pictures, getting up close to the page to see.

I received a copy of this book from ZonderKidz and the author. This review is my own, honest opinion.

My daughter and I have both checked out this cool book for girls.
She likes that it has stories about girls and women from the bible that she has learned about in Sunday School and Awana. She always gets excited when she recognizes one they have just studied. She also loves to read the personal letters from God to her. She is currently using it for her morning devotional read.

I like that it catches my daughter's attention, that she enjoys reading it and can learn something from it. I also like the little notes at the end of each story that add a personal touch to it. A love letter from God to her that includes her in the story, and makes it applicable to her life.

This book is beautifully illustrated and pretty for girls. The colorful pictures are so eye catching! There are multiple stories of girls or women from the Bible and how God loved them and proved his love for them. Each story ends with a personal love letter from God to your girl. And the book itself ends with a giant page in which your girl can write her own love letter TO God. I think that is so special. Our children need to learn to love GOD, not just to accept His love for them. Reading through the book should make them aware of all He has done for them, so they can see all the reasons why they should love him back. I also liked that each story included the passage of Scripture in the Bible where you could find the story. There was a separate verse in an image somewhere on the page also. I can't say I found anything about this book I really didn't like. The more I browsed the pages, the more I liked what I saw.

My recommendation for my own daughter was to read through the whole book, then write her personal love letter to God. I would recommend this book for any girl ages 7-11.

We received this book from Zondervan, Booklook and Handlebar to read for free. We were not asked to review it positively. And all opinions are our own.

My granddaughters and I love to write letters back and forth to each other. I enjoy doing this because it is an easy way for me to tell them one more time that I love them. It allows me to be a part of their lives even when we are miles apart.

While it is important to me that they know I love them, it is even more important to me that they know God loves them. In fact He has given them beautiful love letters to assure them of that very fact. Those love letters are found in the Bible.

In her book Love Letters from God, Glynys Nellist highlights some of the best Bible stories that convey the love of God. Each story is told in a very engaging way that will appeal to young listeners. Along with each story there is a short Bible verse that would be an easy memory verse to help your child remember the truth of God's love. At the end of each story there is a lift-the-flap letter that can be personally addressed to your child and is written to them from God.

When I was reading this book aloud to a couple of my grandkids their faces just lit up when I read the letters to them. The idea that God would love them so personally that He would pen a letter to them made them feel so special.

If you have children in your life this would be a great book to purchase for them. The importance of knowing God loves you cannot be overstated. The knowledge of God's love is the best gift that you can give to those special people in your life.

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

“I had so much fun making the world! But do you know the very best thing I made? It was you!”

Every child loves getting mail, so can you imagine their excitement when they open this book and turn the pages to see actual letters from God written to them? It is a beautifully written and gorgeously illustrated interactive-lift-the-flap envelope-style book. It is written for children ages 4-8. There are a total of 18 Bible Stories with nine from the Old Testament and nine from the New Testament. Each story culminates with a Bible verse and a letter from God. At the end of the book there is a blank space for your child to write their own letter to God.

What a FABULOUS book! I found this to be such a fascinating way to introduce your child to the Bible and listening to how God may speak encouragement and inspiration to your little ones through His word. This book begins by making your child feel so special.

This book would make an excellent gift to a child for birthdays or holidays, but can you imagine the inspiration and encouragement it would give to a child who is ill? This will be a book that will be read over and over again. I would highly recommend this book for any child ages 4-8. I completely adored this book!

Disclosure: I was given a copy of this book by the publisher, ZonderKidz, for an honest review. I was not required to write a favorable review nor was I compensated for my review. The opinions in this review are my own.

This book is wonderful! The illustrations are great, the writing is thoughtful and personal and easy for kids to relate to. In each story there is a "lift-the-flap" letter from God to your child corresponding to the story. Also, at the end of each story there is a Scripture that relates to the story and what it means for your child. For example, after telling the story of Joseph ("The Brave Little Brother"), God's letter to your child writes that sometimes there are times when we feel sad. In those times we should remember that we are never alone and He will never leave us. Lastly in "God's Wonderful Words to You", there is a verse that correlates to the story. In Joseph's story, it is Joshua 1:5, "I will never leave you."
This layout is wonderful for nighttime or family devotions. I love the repetition and reinforcement of the concepts so they can "hide God's Word in their hearts." All the verses are short, simple phrases so they are easy to remember and memorize. I cannot wait to add this book to our family collection!

**********Review Roundup of Engaging Children's Books for Ages 3-8***************

God Gave Us Angels, by Lisa Tawn Bergren, Art by Laura J. Bryant, Hardcover, WaterBrook Press, 2014, Ages 3-7, 40 Pages, 978-1601426611, $11.99

Lisa Tawn Bergren's delightful "read-to-me" account of God Gave us Angels opens with Little Cub on a tree branch high above the snow-covered ground. Father Bear stretches tall to rest his furry, white paws next to Little Cub and asks what she's doing.

"Lookin' for angels," says Little Cub in a hushed voice, cause the bunnies had told her angels were "all around us" and Mama Bear said they were hard to find because they were "imbisible." Papa Bear agrees angels are invisible, "but not always."…Full Review: http://www.examiner.com/list/engaging...

This book arrived today and I could not wait to read it. The very thought of God writing a letter to a child was a concept that I wish I had thought of myself. I enjoyed the Bible stories, some of them more than others, but I loved each and every letter that was attached to the pages. They were insightful and will touch a child's heart at their level. I was also in awe of the invitation in the back and the blank letter for the child to write a letter to God. A wonderful story, the illustrations are great, colorful but not overwhelming the message of the book. 5 stars from this reviewer.

This is the best "lift-the-flap" book that provides great Biblical information with a fresh approach by using pint size postcards just for children to read. These love letters from God are real treasures of His affirming love to everyone. The author echos a strong spiritual message here. Each page is filled with beautiful illustrations that give a scrap book feel, like a colorful quilt. I am very impressed with the beauty of detail and richness of the layout of Biblical scriptures woven in story form. This is an excellent visual journey for the reader. What a delight for young people and their parents. Makes a great gift, plus a wonderful addition to home and church library.

Love Letters From God: Bible Stories is a heartwarming, beautiful, educational, captivating, sweet, creative and fantastic story! My heart is bursting after reading all of these gorgeous love letters from God! This book has the most unique and lovely formatting! Every page includes a bible story, a line of scripture, and a love letter from God. This love letter includes the most important take-aways from the stories. Each of these take-aways are written in a way that are applicable to the child and can be personalized to the child. My favorite was the love letter after Joseph's story which was a beautiful reminder that God is always with us even in times of heartbreak, anger, grief, and sorrow. Even though the sadness is not always taken away and the situation is not always fixed, God sits in our grief with us and feels that sorrow too. This was a beautiful lesson that most of the churches I have attended failed to teach. Each of these love letters are profound, heartwarming, and tell your child the most the important things they need to know about God.

To be completely honest, this is a book I needed to read as an adult! It certainly filled my cup! This book is for all ages in my humble opinion. It would be perfect to gift someone who is new to church or who has had a negative experience with a church, but still believes in God. This book showcases the best of Christianity! I absolutely love it!

I am a children’s ministry director, and I LOVE BOOKS! Glenys Nellist is one of my favorite authors for children, and I have bought many of her books for our church’s classrooms. I recently learned that she had new UPDATED versions of her Love Letters from God series. Now I love the originals, and was just the teensiest worried that the content had changed. No! The format has improved – no dust jacket anymore (makes it so much easier for a read-aloud!) and the folded letters that were part of each page have now been incorporated straight into the page - I am sure this makes these books easier to produce.
All of Glenys’ writing that puts the reader and listener directly into the bible scene are there; all the precious words that express deep love from God in each letter; all the illustrations of each character remain. I DID win this edition as a part of a contest (full disclosure), and I am so thrilled that I did. Glenys, as always, ushers us straight into the loving arms of God. Precious book!

This book is great for every young person. It’s rare to find a book that can minister to young people that will get them to think. The author does this by suggesting the person reading the story fill out their own letter to God. It is a perfectly wonderful idea in how to get them to concentrate on what really matters - understanding God and themselves better.. too many times all of us are in too much of a hurry to really focus on God’s word. Here is a great opportunity for kids to slow down and think about what God says and how they relate to God. Wish there were a book like this when I was younger.

Love Letters from God tells a variety of popular Bible stories (Creation, Noah, Joseph, etc.) in a child-friendly manner. Each story is accompanied by the Scripture reference, illustrations, and a lift up flap that contains a letter written from “God” to the child. I don’t like the manner in which the stories are told. The author adds to the story of Daniel by saying that God made the lions nap until Daniel left the den the next day. We know no such thing to be true. Also, she names the young lad in the loaves and fishes story, Nathan. While it may seem like a small problem, she later has “God” talk to the child in the letter about “Nathan” and that makes me uncomfortable. I don’t like adding to the Bible and certainly don’t like putting words in God’s mouth. Children deserve truth.

I have a huge problem with the illustrations. The images of Adam and Eve are entirely too risqué. Yes, I know they were naked before sin entered in the world. But, that doesn’t mean that I want my son to see images of nakedness. Eve’s shapely body is too prominently on display in two images and her flowing hair barely obscures her nipples. People may have different levels of comfort as to what they feel is modest or appropriate, but I don’t want to encourage my son to see sensual images from an early age. We are very careful about what kind of imagery comes into our house and are constantly reviewing it to make adjustments. I will not be letting my son see this book.

The flaps are a cute touch. I like the idea of children understanding that God is trying to communicate with us via his word. But, many of the letters are poorly written and don’t connect well with the message. My biggest problem is the emphasis on the final letter being “the invitation.” When I hear invitation in a Christian context, I imagine it’s trying to give people a chance to “become saved” “accept Jesus” “become a follower” or whatever your chosen vernacular is. But, this book talks about becoming part of God’s team, doesn’t mention sin or repentance and then expects the child to write back, without providing any help other than “write back a note to accept the invitation.” If the book is talking about something other than accepting Christ’s gift of forgiveness for your sins, repenting and following him than it does a poor job. But, then I don’t really know what being part of God’s team means to this author.

This book has many other problems, every time that a small positive item is found it is quickly negated by a more serious problem. I like the fact that they handle the crucifixion in a non-gruesome, yet still solemn manner, but then they don’t make it clear that his death was for our sins. Every time I count on Love Letters from God to make a serious point it disappoints. I can’t recommend this book for any child and certainly won’t be reading it to Baby G.

I was provided with a copy of Love Letters from God from BookLook Bloggers for this post, however all opinions are my own.

What child does not love to receive mail? What if that child could receive, open and read his or her own personal mail from God?

The Love Letters from God will invite them to do just that! Accompanying each story in this unique children’s Bible is a very special and encouraging letter, each tucked away in its own lift-the-flap envelope, just for them. Written for children ages four to eight, the Love Letters from Godincludes eighteen of the most popular Bible stories—nine from the Old Testament and nine from the New Testament. Following each story the child will find his or her own letter from God.

Children will love the excitement of opening the letters and parents will love how each letter elaborates on the Bible story being told. A very special Bible verse, entitled God’s Wonderful Words To You will accompany each story and letter. Much more than a mere memory verse, each carefully chosen promise will be God’s very own personal words of love, encouragement, and hope. This book will culminate in an invitation for the children to write their own RSVP to God.

LOVE LETTERS FROM GOD is a great Bible story book for children. I used it as part as my homeschool day. Not all the stories are entirely biblically accurate (Jesus didn’t carry His cross all the way up the hill, the Bible states someone else did) but they are close. My daughters enjoyed the letters from God especially.

If you are looking for a good Bible story book for children with a unique twist, LOVE LETTERS FROM GOD is a book to consider. Also good for Sunday schools, church nurseries, Christian schools, church libraries, children’s church or as a gift for your favorite child. $16.99 hardcover. 40 pages.

I have often sat in worship service or at Bible study and heard the comment, "The Bible is God's love letter to you." And that is very true but we tend to relegate that choice phrase to the background of our memories and read the Bible without completely realizing that it is, in fact, God's love letter to us. To you. To me. To each and every man, woman, child.

The author has carried that thought to fruition in an absolutely lovely book for girls. She has taken the stories of 14 women or girls in the Bible and shown how God loves (loved) them. Then an application is make where the young girls reading the stories can see how God loves them and has show this love in His love letter to them.

In the very first story which is about the very first girl, the reader learns about Eve who sinned when she chose the forbidden fruit and ate thereof. But that is not the end of the story. No, God covers Eve, forgives her, allows her to live. The application - tucked away in the little "lift the flap" love letter to the reader - is that even though the reader might sin, God forgives and God covers that sin.

This concept of story, God's love, and application is repeated in each of the stories. A Bible verse appropriate to the lesson and story is included with each. The illustrations are charming, softly colored, and will engage the interest of the reader.

I highly recommend this book to first be used as a read-aloud devotional and discussion with young girls and parents. Then to be read, and re-read. This is a great opportunity to sprinkle in and elaborate on deeper theological ideas.

I received a complimentary copy to facilitate a review. Opinions are my own and freely given.

I love the premise of Love Letters from God: Bible Stories for a Girl’s Heart! An inspirational and fun book for young girls aged 4-8 that showcases females in the Bible and how their stories relate to the young reader’s lives.

The set-up of the various Biblical stories is neat and organized. Each section consists of two pages, including a Bible story, verse, lovely illustration, and a flip-up love letter from God. Each letter has a blank space to fill in a name to make it personalized.

Some of the female Bible characters included are Eve, Miriam, Rahab, Deborah, and Hannah, (plus many more.) The section titles are uniform, stating the descriptions and bond they share with the reader, such as: The First Girl, The Thirsty Girl, The Happy Girl, etc.

I can’t give this book enough praise. It is adorable, shares lovely inspiring messages, and teaches Biblical stories that empower young women. The letters are an added treat to make the messages more pertinent and intimate, and the slipcovered hardback book is sturdy.

The stories are inspiring and the illustrations are detailed and colorful. An added treat is on the last page, where a blank flip-up letter allows the reader to write her own love letter back to God.
