About the author

Robert Vaughan is an American writer. He has also written a series of contemporary and historical romance novels under several pseudonyms including "Paula Moore" and "Paula Fairman". His father served in the military and Robert followed him in the 1950s, entering army aviation. He served until the Vietnam War and won numerous medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal with several oak-leaf clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal, and several other medals.
His early books reflected his military background: the first novel was about the US Army along the DMZ in Korea, followed by a trilogy set in Vietnam. There are more than 9 million of his books in print under various names. He was inducted into the Writers’ Hall of Fame in 1998.

"In Honored Glory" is a fierce, descriptive novel by Robert Vaughan. In this novel he hardships that were faced in the Spanish American War in the eyes of war general Joseph Murchison and his son Todd Murchison. Todd has to lead the buffalo soldiers in battle to attack San Juan Hill. In this battle, biased opinions are set aside as black and white soldiers have to fight together.

"In Honored Glory" is based around the times of the Spanish American War and life in the American West back in the 19th century. The book starts off as General Sigsbee, General Murchison and crew are aboard a ship called Maine. Early on an explosion happens on the Maine, thus starting the Spanish American War. "Remember The Maine!" was a war cry that pushed soldiers to get involved in the hard fought war against the Spanish in Cuba. The main characters in this book are General Joseph Murchison, Lt.Todd Murchison, President McKinley, Colonel Baldwin and General Sigsbee.

I recommend this book because it is a straight forward novel about the Spanish American War and is seen through the eyes of many people in different places at the time of the war. The details about the war are lightweight but the emotions that were felt in the perspective of each person were described vigorously. I read and enjoyed this book because it showed historical references, action packed and a bit Romantic at times. I recommend this book for anyone above the age of 13.

a great Spanish American War novel

So little is done about 1898, and in this saga we have a female journalist, a dashing young cavalry officer, rough riders and buffalo soldiers with naval personnel giving a grand performance.
Vaughan never fails to grab the reader and drag them into the yarn.

I read a lot of historical fiction novels and so I feel qualified to classify this one as "historical-light". The novel is the very straight-forward depiction of the Spanish American War, as seen through the eyes of several central characters, including a female journalist, a recently-graduated West Pointer, and an experienced Buffalo Soldier. As in other Robert Vaughn books I've read, the story is set against a true-to-life backdrop, although the details of the historical aspects are lightweight. By that I mean we never dig down into what's happening in the war itself, the causes, the impact, the life-altering experiences that we get from other authors. We stay only on the surface. The war itself seems to be more of a picnic outing than a war. Vaughn does do a good job showing the interests and the prejudices of the press during that period.

I bought this book because it dealt with a period which is often glossed over by historical fiction, with the possible exception of the Rough Riders themselves. We see them here, as well, but they don't overshadow the others. I got what I expected: a straight-forward story, with bits of romance, action, and historical references. A good read, as long as you don't expect to much.
