A cheerfully illustrated tale with Inuit roots

In the time before animals were as they are today, Walrus, who had spiralled, curly tusks and not the long, straight tusks we recognize today, spent his time diving for clams. One day, Walrus was about to surface with a mouthful of tasty clams, when Raven cast a spell on the ocean, freezing Walrus in place under the water. Walr

The idea in this book of the Strength in the Land reminded me a lot of the way that people talk about the Force in the Star Wars universe, though also different.

The story was engaging though I did wonder (view spoiler)

There's so much to love about this #OwnVoices book: the narrative begins with a beautiful description of the indigenous Inuit concept of Strength from the Land. The story is told with engaging prose (though I didn't connect with the new school cartoon-y illustrations). Like in real life, the story concludes with (view spoiler)

I didn’t particularly like this book, which is sad because the illustrations are awesome!!! In a why it is a type of Just So Story that tells the reader how the Walrus got his tusks. But it is a sad story of bullying and being mean. And in the end there is no “let’s be friends”. Instead there was still a separation, and a walrus wink. Plus you have this ‘strength of the land’ idea that while weird at first, works with the story well. But the ending is so up in the air and depressing that this bo ...more
Walrus has beautiful spiraled tusks and can catch and eat clams with ease. Raven must search through the mud to find clams not being willing to try becoming a walrus for fear of embarrassing herself. But her envy turns to rage when Walrus notices her efforts one day and makes fun of her. Calling out to the Strength of the Land, Raven turns the surface of the ocean to ice trapping Walrus inside. Raven encourages other creatures to join her in tormenting Walrus who can no longer search for clams. ...more
Greed, envy, conflict and reprisal in this just-so story from the Arctic. Dynamic, somewhat comicky illustrations match Raven's prickly personality and Walrus's eventual rage.

Inuit tale about how walruses got the kind of tusks they have today. Good story unfortunate cartoonish illustrations.
