The Obelisks of Egypt: Skyscrapers of the Past is an important work detailing and revealing the ancient obelisks of Egypt. The book chronicles the origin, function, and fate of ancient Egyptian obelisks. I was struck by the fact that more original ancient Egyptian obelisks now reside outside of Egypt, due to them being either plundered or "gifted" to other countries and empires (there are 13 in Rome, 1 in New York, 1 in Istanbul, 1 in London, etc.) The fate of these monuments, as well as their function and symbolism, are as interesting as their origins. The original edition was the first comprehensive look at ancient Egyptian obelisks.
