Thanks to Ryan Toxopeus for giving me this book to review.

When Thomas kills a co-worker, he and his best friend, Sarentha leave everything they have known, and in the dead of night they are offered a job they cannot refuse. As they become part of a nobleman’s plans, they meet Eliza and together they go on quests across the Tamorran Empire. With grand plans in motion, will the trio be able to withstand what faces them and discover the truth?

A Noble’s Quest is an enjoyable fantasy adventure, which

A Noble’s Quest is a well put together epic fantasy. I was pleased to read a series opener that is a complete story arc unto itself. The pacing was well done, particularly given that epic fantasies can be prone to being slow paced and drawn out. The characters do need more growth and development. Thomas had potential, but they remained close to stereotypes and stock characters. The pl

If you’ve ever played Dungeons and Dragons, chances are you and your group of fellow adventurers sometimes waded into combat without asking a lot of questions first. Or justified a slaughter when diplomacy fell through. Or found it easier to kill the King’s guards and hide the bodies than face up to some perhaps well-deserved justice.

You did all this in the name of fun and because, as the main characters in your own story, you were obviously the heroes. You saved the world, or at least the town,

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel. It's a tale of unexpected heroes with a twist of humour. The novel had me right from the first page. The immediate sense of urgency kept me wondering what is going on, who is this person I"m following, and why are they running. The characters are very clearly defined and the story moves at a very comfortable pace I never once felt like I needed to use my skimming abilities to jump through a page or two. In fact I gave myself three days to read this and di ...more

Elves and dwarves, men and halflings, gnomes and orcs...this is a high fantasy story in the tradition of Terry Brooks, with gaming influences also apparent. Fast paced, and with a unexpected twist towards the end, The Noble's Quest suitably entertained me. The gaming influences, I think, are most apparent in the pace of the story, and the characters' self-awareness, tending towards 'kill now, think about it later' rather than the more reflective nature of some fantasies.

But if it is adventure yo

It’s nice to see a Fantasy story where the girl gets to use a crossbow. Eliza, for being a princess-y type, is a solid character who’s equally witty and brave as the men. Thomas and Sarentha aren’t quite what I was expecting either. As common lumberjacks thrown into an adventure, they of course adapt and become heroes. But strong Thomas is a pacifist, and roguish Sarentha has a good heart despite his focus on shiny coins. Together, these main characters are an odd trio, but their friendship is r ...more

I absolutely loved the prologue to this story, where we are introduced to humanity's greatest champion and hero, Matthew Strongblade.

The book then jumps ahead 450 years later to where we meet best friends Sarentha and Thomas who, after getting themselves into some trouble, are approached by a mysteriously cloaked figure who offers to send the two of them on a quest. Fortunately for us, the two friends, being the adventurous type, accept the offer.

Toxopeus has crafted a fun, well-thought-out, cl

The first book in a trilogy, the story initially explores how a trio of adventurers come together and why. As they embark on several quests for the Lord who is their benefactor, we get a lot of backstory and what larger purpose these quests have. Throughout it all the Lord promises a great truth will be revealed once everything is prepared. It is at the climax of the book that the truth is indeed revealed and it is worth all of the build up. perhaps being even a grander revelation than could hav ...more

A friend on Facebook posted this book and said to check it out. I was skeptical at first because well, who knows right? I read all genres, fiction and non-fiction and I read about 100 books a year. Ryan's book, "A Noble's Quest" had me right from the start. I liked the humour and the story line - when I finished the book, I immediately checked to see if the author had a second book in the series so I could read more. This is exactly the type of self-published work (entertaining, well-edited and ...more

I had the privilege of reading this book in it's Beta format, and have just finished reading it in it's final version. Yes it improved ( a lot) between versions. :-) It is an easy reading, entertaining book. I am looking forward to the next book.

I've been a big fan of Ryan's Empire's Foundation series for a long time. And so I was super excited when the final book in the core trilogy came out this February. The series as a whole runs a most delightful path that totally sucks you in and keeps you trapped in Illuma for a delightful week or two.

A Nobel's Quest is an exciting introduction to the world of Illuma and to our trio of intrepid...lumberjacks? I instantly fell in love with Thomas, and Sarentha reminds me greatly of a certain rasca

A Noble's Quest introduces some unlikely heroes to a mysterious quest, revealing truths and secrets the deeper they delve. A traditional-style fantasy with magic, dwarves, elves, halflings, dragons and more, this is a fun, exciting story, with memorable characters fighting to reveal an epic secret. I look forward to reading more of this series.

Ryan Toxopeus, award winning writer of the Empire's Foundation fantasy trilogy, has been writing fantastic tales for two decades. His first award was received in university, when he entered a short story contest with a work of fiction that chronicled a Dutch resistance fighter in World War II, who was captured by the Nazis and put in a concentration camp. The story took first place, much to the su ...more
