After Whorl: Donning Double Cloaks is the third in Nancy Jardine's Celtic Fervour series. The book follows on from The Beltane Choice and After Whorl: Bran Reborn, and I think this series is one that's best read in the right order! This novel takes place over quite a long period of time and the characters all travel considerable distances so the storyline felt quite different to the previous books. I liked Jardine's portrayal of changes in

This novel, the third in its series, follows directly on from “The Beltane Choice” and After Whorl: Bran Reborn.” Each novel carries us forward in time, but each novel also changes the viewpoint. In the first, we followed the fortunes of the lovers, Nara and Lorcan; in the second, those of Lorcan’s brother, the warrior, Brennus. In this third novel, the focus is on Ineda, who helped her grandmother nurse Brennus back to health after sustaining terrible injuries in battle against the Romans.

This third book in the Celtic Fervour series is my favourite so far. This novel follows straight on from The Beltane Choice and After Whorl: Bran Reborn. We discover what happened to Ineda and Bran after they are ambushed by a passing a Roman patrol.

The timeline scans ten years with the focus mostly on Ineda and her life in captivity. It's fascinating to understand the dynamics of the relationship between her and her captor Tribune Valerius. Despite the hostility between them in the beginning,

Nancy Jardine has done it again. This series is brilliant and I can’t get enough of it. Not every author gets better with each book, but this author sure does and I already can’t wait for the next book.

The world building is perfection. I could feel, see, hear and smell what Nancy Jardine wanted me to. I love how detailed and realistic this feels. The characters are just as fantastic too. I love when I’m reading a character driven novel that has great world building too.

I highly recommend
