I have been anxiously awaiting this debut novel by Warren Cantrell, and I finally received my copy from Amazon yesterday.
Love the premise and love dystopian adventures.
Stay tuned.

I received a copy of this book free to review from Netgalley. The concept is quite interesting. When two brothers invent a time travel machine that is capable of sending someone into the future, the government takes over and there is a reality show contest - hosted by Ryan Seacrest - in order to chose a person to send into the future. Sam Grant, who is getting his master's degree in history, and is being pressured by his mother to apply to schools for his PHD, applies instead, for the time trave ...more

First I have to say that Warren did a FABULOUS job with this book. I was hooked right from the start and I mean really hooked. I love the idea of time travel so when I started reading this book I was thinking things would go one way when in reality they took on a life of it's own. This is a must read book for everyone.

My Thoughts:

Obvious Child by Warren Cantrell is a strange story to describe, it's part sci-fi, part modern culture, and part drama.

The sci-fi is easy to explore as the tale begins with the first successful time travel experiment being broadcast on YouTube. Of course YouTube is hardly a private medium, so it is not long before the discovery goes viral and the Government is forced to decide on the best use of the technology through a very public forum. Enter the modern culture aspect... Reality T

The premise of this book is fantastic, and it reads like a screenplay I could easily see filmed. Imagine the hoopla when two brothers invent time travel - the government takes over the project and holds an American Idol-style contest to choose which eminent person will be the first time ambassador. Enter our hero, Sam, a stoner who wants to appease his mother by filling out an application for grad school but instead fills out the forms to be on the time travel project. And once he's in, he can't ...more

Every time I sat down with this book in my hand, I felt a little giddy. Cantrell's main character, Sam Grant, is the kind of profane fuck-up you can really rally behind, because you know he means well, and you know he'd be your good buddy if you knew him in real life. No scene or chapter felt extraneous or out of place, and I plowed through each one to satisfy my burning need to know what our boy Sam would do to get out of, or into, whatever he was into or out of. A sequel is a must, and I can h ...more
