Very casual, user-friendly read sans the haughty discourses and jargon-laden tripe you find in high brow wine publications. I read my first book on wine in 2006 (after attending a Stanford reunion where wine author/alumnus from class of '91 Mark Oldman staged a tasting with autographed copies of his book, Outsmarting wine). Given a choice between reading a long discourse on the innate virtues of pre-2000 first growth Bordeaux and a tract from Joe the Sipper on where to buy great wine at cheap prices, I will always opt for the later. I enjoy reading about blind tastings where the Chilean red is rated over the Chateau Lafite. The simple criteria is if you like the taste, it's good. This book went quite fast and gave me a few more ideas for a future trip to Napa/Sonoma.

I decided this summer that I'd like to learn more about wine. This book was by far my favorite of the "wine books". Easy to read, funny, helpful, written by the sons and daughters of California vintners. Is that the right word, vintners? You know, the people who make wine. Anyway, I liked it and it's divided up so that you can skip to what you want to know more about (pairings, different types of wine, how to stock your wine cellar, etc) or just read straight through.
