Family and fortune betrayed her. Would fate do the same?
Port Royal, Jamaica 1692
Living in a city deemed the wickedest in the world is no easy task for Miss Juliana Dutton. To make matters worse, with an ailing father and a drunken fool for a brother, she is forced to take over the running of the family business in order to survive. When a meddlesome suitor threatens to discover her secret and cast them all onto the streets, she agrees to a spurious engagement with the town buffoon, Lord Munthrope. She only hopes the man is trustworthy.

A long-time enemy is out to destroy Alex and take Juliana for his own. Struggling to maintain her faith in the Divine, Juliana faces her problems bravely, but the harder she tries, the more it seems everything is working against her. Unwittingly, she and her weak fiancé become entangled in the hostility between the Pirate Earl and his enemy, while even more dangerous forces are rising up to destroy them all.

The Ransom was beautifully written, delightfully engaging with awe inspiring descriptions. Reading it was like going on the adventure of a lifetime. If you like Pirates, (especially one with a heart of gold) and Swashbuckling Romance then this book is for you!
I will be back later to give a more in-depth review.
Instead of reading The Ransom, I decided to listen to this entertaining novel on audio book. The narrator did such a nice job with the reading of this story. She used different voices for the various characters and I thoroughly enjoyed imagining the different people who were speaking.
This was such a fun story! I loved getting to know Juliana, the Pirate Earl, Rowan, Lord Munthrope, and the devious Captain Nichols. Wow! This book is just packed with interesting people, worrisome situations, lighthearted humor, danger, and love.
Juliana was a wonderful character, even though she sometimes made choices that put her in situations that she had to be rescued from. Whether it was the flamboyant Lord Munthrope or the dashing Pirate Earl, or the powerful Captain Nichols, Juliana had to juggle the attentions of several men.
I loved this story and all of the tension that was running through it, both romantic tension and financial tension. The story took wonderful twists and turns that kept me captivated from start to finish. I wasn’t ready for the story to end and recommend it to those who love romantic adventure stories.
The Ransom was a highly entertaining read! Pure MaryLu Tyndall at her best--with a dashing rogue gentleman pirate with a huge spiritual arc. Julianna is a gentle soul but with lots of spirit--she's trying to take care of everyone, including her sick father, her wastrel brother, and orphans at a nearby orphanage, and she's running the family business to keep them afloat. Lord Muntrope, a dandy who is ridiculous, and the Pirate Earl both offer her differing degrees of support. I won't spoil what they have in common. But will a naval officer be the ruination of them all?
MaryLu Tyndall’s books are fascinating! Her stories are unique and well written. They’re the kind that keep you riveted to the edge of your seat. And once again, she has written a tale that is filled with high adventure, intrigue, danger, and of course…romance.
“The Ransom”, which is the fourth book in her “Legacy of the King’s Pirates” series, takes us on a faraway journey to the city of Port Royal, Jamaica, where one minute you’re mingling with high society and the next, you’re experiencing the world of pirates and thieves. And all the while, you become caught up in the blooming romance between the heroine, Juliana Dutton, and the hero, Alex Hyde. The spiritual element, which is threaded beautifully through the story, is how God goes to great lengths to work and intervene in the lives of the children He loves. All brought together in a dramatic conclusion. Another masterpiece by author MaryLu Tyndall!
A pirate for a guardian angel, the town laughing stock for a fiance' and an obsessive naval officer for a rival...all have woven themselves into Juliana Dutton's life, and as far as she is concerned, all are unwelcome.
Step into Port Royal, Jamaica 1692, and experience the extremes of two worlds as one woman faces both with unspeakable courage. Juliana must keep up appearances in the glamor of society to save her family, yet, her compassion and a promise she made to her dying mother keeps her reaching out to those who are less fortunate. Diligently, she visits the orphans and helps her friend who works down by the wharf. Yet, these same missions of mercy put Juliana in constant danger - and in the presence of the Pirate Earl. Though this notorious pirate has done nothing but been kind, even chivalrous to Juliana, she doesn't trust him. In an effort to fix her own problems, she agrees to a fake an engagement with the town buffoon to keep her brother from forcing an unwanted marriage on her with an over obsessive naval officer. In the midst of trying to please society, God and her demanding/sick father, she begins to realize that her plans to save everything she holds dear is slowly falling apart.
Mary Lu Tyndall takes this beautiful, driven, independent woman and unites her with unforgettable characters in The Ransom! Mary Lu Tyndall is one of my favorite authors. I have a lot of favorite books, but it takes something special to become a favorite author. But the themes, settings and characters she writes keeps me coming back for every new book she publishes. There are many things about The Ransom that make it a five star read for me. The first is that it's a "pirate book." For some reason, there aren't many books on the Christian market that include this unsavory lot in their storylines. But Mary Lu not only writes a pirate novel that's clean romantically, she can walk her characters into a tavern and describe the scene so well you can almost hear the snap of cards against the table and sloshing of ale in the glass.
Sometimes when I read reviews online I see people say, "Well, the plot was pretty predictable." Or, "You could figure out how this story was gonna end." But you can't say that about The Ransom! Mary Lu creates a world of twists and turns you can't figure out. How Alex and Juliana end up together after all they endure is truly a work of art! When I read the last page I just sat and grinned - with such an ending, I really hope there's another book in the works for this series.
The character development was superb! I loved how Tyndall crafted the story so you fell in love with the Pirate (the one that's supposed to be the villain) and made the man who "supposedly" upheld the order of the Crown the one you disapproved of. It was so easy to become attached to the supporting characters too! The children at the orphanage, the butler, housekeeper and even Munny. My favorite supporting character was Jonas, the Pirate Earl's surgeon. He had such a great place in the story with his kind, faithful heart. My heart fell at the prison scene, but soared when good triumphed and evil was swept away.
Another reason why I gave this book a five star review was because the characters had and overcame problems that we still face today. Miss Dutton didn't feel like she could trust anyone because so many people in her life disappointed her and let her down, even God. But when she came to the end of the journey (in the book, cause her journey really just began!) she looked back over her life and saw God's hand orchestrating every step she took. And when you're done with this book it encourages you to do the same. A very encouraging read spirituality.
I would highly recommend The Ransom to anyone who enjoys Historical Christian Romance with an exciting, adventurous storyline! You won't be disappointed by anything! It's clean, informative, humorous and enjoyable. If those are things you like, you're gonna want to read The Ransom!
I really liked this book - so much! With pirates, British parties and fancy clothes, a Scarlett Pimpernel-type of disguise (I loved the Scarlett Pimpernel!), a couple of semi-villains seeking to do harm, a dashingly handsome male main character and a beautiful female main character -- you have all the elements of a rousing story! This is one of those books that I didn't want to put down, but I also was sad to see come to an end. While much of the story was predictable, but luscious -- the ending had some real surprises. The author did a masterful job using some real life occurrences to weave into her story and make it all that much better.
With quill in hand, MaryLu Tyndall has crafted a swashbuckling, seafaring adventure set in the wicked city of Port Royal, Jamaica, where nefarious villains and pirates roam the streets—and where an unescorted lady dare not!
Juliana Dutton is the daughter of one of the wealthiest shipping merchants in Port Royal. With a drunken gambler of a brother and an ailing father, Juliana must keep the business afloat single handedly—all while trying to help a fallen friend, and work at the orphanage as well. While seeking to stave off the affections of an intrusive would-be suitor – Captain Nichols – Juliana agrees to a fake engagement to the foppish Lord Munthrope, who perhaps may not be all he appears to be. He seems all too willing to help, but can he be trusted?
When Juliana is accosted by vulgar ruffians on her way to check on her friend, a most unlikely person comes to her rescue…the most feared and relentless pirate on the Spanish Main—Pirate Earl! The infamous Pirate Earl, Alexander Hyde, son of Captain Edmund Merrick Hyde, leads a dual life as he attempts to hide the dark secrets that plague his soul day and night. As her faint-hearted fiancé and Juliana's lives become intertwined with the fearsome Pirate Earl, an enemy follows and dangers ensue—especially those of the heart. For the virtuous Juliana simply cannot get the memory of the startling, piercingly blue eyes of a certain immoral, enigmatic pirate out of her mind…
MaryLu Tyndall has written an exhilarating adventure on the high seas and off, that will awaken your senses and heighten your emotions with her amazing descriptive imagery! With an intricate, heart racing plot guaranteed to cause the reader to chuckle and shed a few tears, this is certainly in my opinion, one of, if not the best pirate novels that has ever come from this writer's pen…er, quill that is. With a powerful thread of redemption and second chances, I drew a deep sigh at the satisfying conclusion, and tears formed in my eyes at that wonderful last sentence (but don't peek!) So get yer sea legs on, mateys—ye are about to set sail on a journey ye won't soon forget!
Those two words sum up everything I love about MaryLu Tyndall's new release, The Ransom, the fourth in her Legacy of the King's Pirates series. (Disclaimer: I was given a free e-copy of the book by the author in exchange for my review.)
Set in the Caribbean--Port Royal, Jamaica--in the late 17th Century, The Ransom is a story of identities and the roles we play to survive in whatever society we find ourselves in. After the death of her mother, Juliana Dutton is left to run her family's shipping business when her father becomes ill and her brother turns to gambling and drinking. With the help of the family's butler, she's got the town convinced all is well with the business. For now. On the other hand, Alexander Hyde, son of the infamous Captain Merrick Hyde, is living a pirate's life by night while masquerading as the dandy Lord Munthrope by day. When Lord Munthrope offers Juliana a pact that could help them both, their carefully constructed schemes begin to unravel.
The Ransom is a fun tale laced with adventure and romance, bringing to mind the antics of Westley in The Princess Bride or any of the Johnny Depp Pirates of the Caribbean movies, all of which I now want to watch again.
When I first started reading Tyndall's books just over a year ago, her seafaring adventures intrigued me because I hadn't read anything like that in inspirational fiction. But I convinced myself that I wasn't really all that into pirates. After much consideration, and plenty of reading, I can safely say that has all changed. I'm firmly rooted in the pirate camp, and what I love about Tyndall's stories, including this one, are the elements of faith worked in. Everyone is struggling with their beliefs and has made mistakes they regret. But none are exempt from redemption.
Though technically book four in the series, The Ransom can be read as a standalone novel. But trust me when I say you'll also want to read the other books in the series: The Redemption, The Reliance and The Restitution.
MaryLu Tyndall knows how to write great pirate novels! I haven't read the first three books in her "Legacy of the King's Pirates" series, but I still greatly enjoyed "The Ransom". I loved how the main character, Alex, had two personas - one the acclaimed "Pirate Earl", the other gentlemanly Lord Munthrope. This resulted in some humorous scenes, since Juliana didn't know they were the same man.
I really enjoyed the story. It had adventure, suspense, romance, and a good message. The ending was very good and makes me curious about how things will continue.
There were a few things I didn't care for in the story - chiefly the times curse words were said ("D" and "H"). It wasn't much, but I would have preferred it to have just said "he cursed" or something.
Overall, though, a really good read! I look forward to reading more of Tyndall's novels and recommend "The Ransom" to mature readers who enjoy adventurous pirate stories. :)

You have got to read this book! It will catch you from page one and keep you captive until the very end. Oh, why did it have to end? I truly believe that this is MaryLu at her finest. I am so happy that she has once again dipped her quill into the ink of adventure upon the high seas, romance and let's not forget about the pirates! The Ransom is Book Four in a series, but no worries if you haven't read the first three. This book can totally stand on it's own. However, I highly recommend reading the entire series. The main characters (or what I like to call actors, because I feel like I am enjoying a movie rather than a book) are wonderfully written. The banter that goes back and forth between Alex and Juliana is priceless. I found myself laughing out loud while reading certain passages and totally blown away by the history unfolding before my eyes. I really do not want to give away too much, so I will simply say.....”Hahaha!” “Oh my!” “Sniff sniff...” “Are you kidding me?!” “Wow, I didn't see that coming!” “Oh my!” (yes, again) “Praise be to God!” “Look out!” “Ha! You SO deserved that!” I have read every book that MaryLu Tyndall has written. She has never disappointed me with her writing. Each book has brought me everything that I look for in a story....excitement, intrigue, humor, history, romance and most of all faith. Throughout her writing career, MaryLu has stayed true to her faith. I suppose this quote from the book sums it up for her: “I have not chosen it. It has chosen me.”
As I was reading The Ransom by Marylu Tyndall, I had to admit that she had topped the list of my favorite authors, even though her book is not even in my favorite genre. Her unique characters are so realistic, they’ll leap off the pages and act out their story in your living room, keeping you enthralled and entertained. I promise this is a book you will find almost impossible to put down.
Juliana is a woman desperately trying to save her family business, but everyone, including God, seems to be fighting against her. Alex, the Pirate Earl, is the ultimate hero. Handsome, honorable, humorous, a gentleman to the core, in spite of his choice of careers. Even the fop Lord Munthrope will keep you entertained with his frivolous antics and hilarious costumes. The Ransom is the ultimate story of survival with a spectacular forbidden romance. It is a tale of finding faith and purpose. If you don’t read this book, you’re cheating yourself out of a fabulous story.
My first Mary Lu Tyndall novel and I really enjoyed it! I really loved the double life/ secret identity plot. Saintly heroine + hunky pirate= great chemistry. The book held my interest and definitely can be read as a stand alone.
Wow! I will admit that this book was a little slower and slightly less captivating to me than the first three in the series, but it more than made up for that in the last fifty pages! That ending was a surprise!
This book focuses on Alexander Hyde and Juliana Dutton and they're tumultuous lives. Alexander abandoned a faith that seemingly failed him for pirating, and Juliana struggled with a faith that she thought promised blessings for good deeds. Both come to realize that they are wrong, and God eventually reveals himself to them in his own time and miraculous ways.
This had less mature themes than the previous books in the series, though it still seems to be written for older readers. It has only mild language and mentions of "foul curses". Only a few kisses, but not much beyond them. However, I do urge readers to read the first two books of the series at least before reading this one, as it will make a lot more sense!
Adorable, lighthearted, swashbuckling romantic cheese. Christian romance seem to be the only books that are clean these days, so in order to trade the smut, doses of redemption are sprinkled throughout (though thankfully it wasn't overwhelming).
Great audiobook reader, fun writer. Yeah, I'll continue her books for their smile-inducing capabilities. Next please!
(Also, 1692 earthquake of Port Royal. Look it up.)
Dare to take a heart-stopping, breathtaking, and hair-raising journey with ‘The Ransom’ to a time and place where fierce and merciless pirates ruled the seas, capturing and plundering merchant ships, and spending their ill-gotten gains on women and spirits after anchoring their sailing vessels in the harbor.
Ruthless, scurrilous pirates and other depraved miscreants infest the town of Port Royal in Jamaica, causing it to go down in history as one of the most nefarious cities in Jamaica in the late 1600’s. With the copious seedy brothels and taverns littering the town near the wharves and feeding the sinful natures of those without God, this is not an area any unaccompanied woman should find themselves in when the sun begins to set, let alone a young lady of great beauty. But while searching for and helping a fallen friend, that’s exactly where the flaxen-haired Juliana Dutton finds herself on more than one occasion.
Feeling like God has abandoned her as she experiences one calamity after another, Juliana has never felt more alone or vulnerable. With an ailing father and drunken, gambling brother, it is up to Juliana to keep a roof over their heads by continuing to run the family’s shipping business. This charade is in dire danger of shattering should anyone find out it is a woman behind the helm. Captain Nichols, a meddlesome and persistent suitor could be just the one to discover her secret.
The dark-haired and charismatic Captain Alexander Hyde leads a secret double life, as the intimidating and feared Pirate Earl, and for his own entertainment mostly (and to us the readers!), as Lord Munthrope, an ostentatious and foppishly flamboyant man of society. Alex has loved Juliana from afar for some time, but sees an opportunity to spend more time with her by orchestrating a phony engagement between her and himself as Lord Munthrope when realizing Juliana desires to distance herself from her persistent suitor. A suitor that is in fact the Pirate Earl’s greatest enemy.
As Juliana comes to know the two separate identities of Alex, is she in danger of forming feelings for one or both of them? Will Captain Nichols finally capture and hang the elusive Pirate Earl? And can Juliana continue to successfully run the family business without being exposed and lose the security she’s worked so tirelessly for?
As you read this artfully written tale where the words and phrases all bespoke of a much different time and place far removed from modern times, you’ll be captivated by this adrenalizing romantic adventure of the swashbuckling type! From clashing sword fights to battles between ships, fire and earthquakes, there is nary a dull moment leading up to the finale of this exhilarating story which will bring a lump to your throat, tears in your eyes, and praise for God in your heart. Fully trusting God even through the darkest valleys is a lesson that’s masterfully illuminated in ‘The Ransom’.
Even though I have not had the pleasure of reading the previous pirate-themed novels in this series, I was more than eager to review this fourth installment as I had already thoroughly enjoyed some of MaryLu Tyndall's other works. And I was so pleased that I could jump right into the story line and not be confused as this is book number four. Definitely easily read as a stand alone, I am looking forward to reading the previous novels, too! There are some mentions here and there that would refer to those previous events which helped intrigue me about their own stories.
For now, we focus on Alexander Hyde and his disguise as a silly leapin' lord, and on his better days, as a Robin Hood-style Pirate Earl. Yes, that's two identities to our Alexander, but which one is the real Alexander? And are sexy pirates to be trusted? He certainly seems more attractive than the over-the-top eccentric patch-wearing Lord Munthrope! Our leading lady Juliana comes across Munny and then comes across Pirate Earl and then betroths herself to one of them in order to fend off another suitor, but will Juliana fall in love with the wrong persona? She has no choice but to see what lays ahead as circumstances fly far beyond her control as she realizes her good-for-nothing brother is gambling away all the family cash as their father lay dying. She could try and run her father's shipping company, but she has to do it without anyone knowing, since a woman doing anything other than looking pretty is a huge no-no in their fancy Port Royal society.
Alexander wants nothing more but to shed either one of his alter-egos, but he has taken his wicked schemes too far and there is no turning back. He hasn't made a lot of enemies as Lord Munthrope, but he is certainly making no friends as a Pirate. And if Juliana finds out he is behind the looting of her own father's ships, all hope will be lost for both of them.
The novel is action packed and full of adventures both on and off the sea and features well-developed characters. Alexander and Juliana remain true to form throughout and the supporting characters helped create the tension and atmosphere of both frollicking and fear as things start to get serious when Juliana's previous suitor is determined to have her at any cost. I loved the intertwining themes of piracy and redemption, love and grief, and always with Tyndall's works is the undercurrent of spirituality. I recommend this to historical romance lovers who would enjoy a hunky pirate in their midst! *i rec'd an egalley in exchange for this review*
Re reading July 2015 and enjoying all over again :) For some reason, I'm not enjoying this book as much as I did the first time. Still a great story, but not grabbing my attention like I thought it would.
Wow, this book had my FULL attention from the first page!! This is definitely a MUST READ for 2014 and a definite treasure for my bookshelves! I didn't consider this book to be a page turner and I took my time reading it as the story was so utterly enjoyable for me. Juliana is an amazing woman, but she is stressed in the story holding together her father's business and her household. I even became somewhat tired of her distress at one point because she was unable to relax and the only time she felt good was when she played the violin late at night. There's no Captain Sparrow in this book, but Lord Munthrope is a perfect substitute! He had me in stitches with his antics and personality yet all the while helping Juliana in unexpected ways. Just loved his character. Then there's the Pirate Earl who's not your typical pirate. He keeps his reputation intact by being feared by all other pirates and plundering other ships, but he surprises the reader with his gentemanly ways and also helps Juliana when she needs it most. He is mysteriously dangerous yet safe at the same time.
Captain Nichols was a beast and it was interesting to see that despite his solid reputation, he is the true villain in the story and the person Juliana is able to see through the easiest. Despite Rowan's irresponsible ways, my heart went out to him in his addictions and helplessness.
The end really surprised me. The Pirate Earl's encounter with God was a strange one, but was relieved at the results. Also, couldn't BELIEVE what happened to the orphanage and was very satisfied how Juliana and her friends found shelter. Those earthquakes were so terrifying and well described. No one writes pirates like Tyndall and even though there are uncomfortable scenes in the story, it is perfectly written, tangible, authentic, filled with hope, great romantic tension, and so very entertaining!!! And I kept looking at the cover as I read :) I also loved, LOVED the language, SOOOOO well done! I hated the injustice, but simply loved how every part of the story served its purpose and kept me glued to its pages. Highly, highly recommend to all readers, you'll quickly be wanting to read more of Tyndall's books after finishing this one :)
MaryLu Tyndall can write a pirate tale like no other! This book is the long awaited sequel to the 3 book 'Legacy of the King's Pirates' series. They say good things come to those who wait and this book proves the saying true. Some years have passed since book 3 but it in no way takes away from the story.
Julianna Dutton is keeping a secret; a huge secret. Her father is desperately ill and she is running his shipping business on the sly. No one will do business with her if they know a woman is running the business. Things are getting rough, though. She can't keep putting her father's business associates off for long.
The Pirate Earl, feared by all and admired by nearly that many, rescues Julianna when she ventures too far afield of propriety to help a friend in need. She can't help but be a bit intrigued by this man, whom she suspects has secrets of his own.
I will give away no more of this story so as not to ruin it for those who haven't read the book, but I will say this: you will not be one bit bored by this book! No, on the contrary, you will sit up late at night and spend every spare moment, even neglecting things to finish the book!
This book was like a breath of fresh air to me. I have read all MaryLu's books and enjoyed them every one, but my, was it good to be back on the high seas again! Boy, I loved this offering from her and I do believe (hint to author) that there will be even more in this series.
MaryLu Tyndall has never shied away from proclaiming Christ in her books and even delving into spiritual warfare and I love this about her. Truly love it and admire her also for this. Christians must stand up for Christ and she does so greatly in her books.
Each of the main characters in this book are dealing with spiritual issues that have held them back and even crippled them to a degree. But God has other plans for them. Plans to rescue them from their own folly and bring them into His marvelous light.
I loved, loved, loved this book! I read like a madwoman because it was so delightful. Nearly every word, every paragrah was like a sweet treat to me.
The spritual aspect of this book was very moving as well. I absolutely cannot wait for the next! Bravo, MaryLu Tyndall!
If you are reading this review, you most likely know what The Ransom by MaryLu Tyndall is about and you want my opinion...so here it goes :)
First, not to offend other readers or authors, but I was thrilled to find something on the shelf that was NOT Amish! Those stories are great...but I wanted something different. The Ransom sure satisfied my need.
On page one, I was swept away to Jamaica in 1692...and in a tavern no less! Why, I've never had a drink in my life...and me, a preacher's daughter!
The way MaryLu writes...I felt like I was there...even smelling the stench of beer and feeling the seediness of the characters that lurked about. Here I met Juliana Dutton. I Really, really like this girl. She does not play a damsel in distress or the victim. I thought it strange that she was in this tavern alone and at night....and yep...I was sunk...deep down in this story. I find out pirates are weaved in, a promise to her dying mother to help the orphans ( can I tell you my dream job since the age of 4...yes, to have an orphanage!), her ailing father, rivalries, suitors, learning to trust God, her alcoholic brother...and Juliana trying to run the family business. How could she juggle it all! Would it all come crashing down?
I was thrilled with this book in all areas. It's over 400 pages, I love the cover,(yes, I judge a book by its cover) I enjoyed the story immensely, and loved how MaryLu includes her faith in God into her books.
Over the years MaryLu has become my favorite author. I'm not one to read a story about pirates, but she changed that....her books are clean and give glory to God! I've seen many authors and publishers slowly removing God from their "Christian fiction" books. I admire MaryLu for her work and mostly her heart for God! She sure has a ministry with her writing and I feel privileged to read her work...it blesses me!
To close...step out of the box and give The Ransom a try...I am so glad that I did! While you're at it...pray for her as she continues on her writing journey and pray her work will continue to bless other lives.
A profound tale of a young woman striving to survive, abandoned orphans, earthquakes, and a preacher-turned-pirate. I found myself captivated by Marylu Tyndall's new book, The Ransom and went on an adventure not to be forgotten.
The adventure of Julianna Dutton, who strives to keep her ill father's business running while her lazy brother gets drunk and gambles away their money. She helps some forsaken orphans and a friend who has fallen into despair; and wonders why God is letting so many bad things happen to her when she's trying to do good.
The adventure of the son of missionary Captain Merrick, Alexander. Alex no longer believes in the God his father taught him about... and turns to piracy as an escape from boredom. He runs a double life, seeking Julianna in both, and also trying to keep outwitting an angry naval officer. I enjoyed the adventurous, humorous, sweetness of The Ransom. Oh, the hilarity! Some were so funny and yet so touching all at once. Loved that. Pirates are always fun too. Especially the ones who are redeemed by God's grace.
There were a few things I could have done without... The rough language for one. I'd rather not have that in my books. But there was no taking God's name in vain or anything, since this is a Christian book... and a deeply spiritual one at that! Also, I was kind of disappointed to hear that Captain Merrick and Charlisse (from the previous books in this series), would leave their young son so often. There were some details and scenarios I could have done without...(if you know me!)
But overall, a lovely story. I appreciate Marylu Tyndall's sensitivity for spiritual things (and how she flawlessly incorporates them into her stories). I adore her deep romances. Oh, I love the adventurous pirate tales! Hoping to read more from this series!!
Or just more from Marylu Tyndall at all. I hear she's coming out with a mermaid tale next...! :)
The Ransom ( Legacy Of The King's Pirates book four) By: MaryLu Tyndall Wow, this is one AWESOME book you will want to put at the top of your list to read. It grabs you from the start and don't let go till the last words, then you are saying, I want more. I have read several of MaryLu's books and I can say that she has out did herself on The Ransom. I loved it and I think it is her best one yet, and she has herself a winner. The Ransom is book four in the series, but you can read it as a stand alone and not get lost. When you read The Ransom get ready for a journey you will not forget. The Ransom takes place in Port Royal Jamaica 1692. This city is the wickedest city in the world. it is not easy for Miss Juliana Dutton who is trying to keep her wealthy father's shipping company from going under. She has an ailing father and a drunk and gambler brother. She is hiding a secret and it must not get out, because it would ruin everything. Juliana is also putting her life in danger going out into this wicked city to help some orphanage. There is Lord Munthrope who acts like the town idiot. I laughter at the Lord so much . Pirate Earl, Alexander Hyde, Alex, is the most known and feared pirate of Port Royal. Oh, but but will you love him or hate him? He has something missing in his life and he takes on a duel role to help fill the emptiness and hide his secrets. Alex also has an enemy who is out to destroy him. There is a lot of secrets in The Ransom. I am going to stop before I give to much away. You will love the characters MaryLu has weaved into her book. One minute I was laughing and the next tears would be rolling down my checks. I think i was on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading this awesome book. Another thing I like about MaryLu Tyndall's books is that she keeps God in her books. Some characters have lost their way, will they find their way before it is to late? I was given an ebook from the author for my honest review.
About ten years ago I discovered the amazing fact of Christian pirate stories through the books of Linda Chaikin. I honestly thought that after I had read all of her books that my days of sailing the Spanish Main were over.... and then I discovered MaryLu Tyndall'sLegacy Of The King's Pirates series and once again I was walking the decks and smelling the salt breeze.
I have enjoyed each of the MaryLu Tyndall books I have read, and The Ransom was no exception. There are great characters, an intriguing time in history and location, a beautiful damsel in distress, a handsome pirate, treasure, betrayal, danger, and romance. Gosh, what more could I need?!
The main characters each struggle with much the same things. Expectations from family, betrayal, and what faith is really about. MaryLu Tyndall combines a no-holds-barred approach to spiritual truths with her own excellent writing skills that I find completely refreshing in today's Christian fiction market.
One of my favorite parts of The Ransom is the earthquake that that makes a rather, shall we say, noticeable appearance. The earthquake really did strike Port Royal in 1692 and divers are continually discovering new things about the city before. I am one of the nutty people that enjoys reading about earthquakes and hurricanes so when coupled with a great story it sucked me in like tsunami.
Do not miss any of the books in this series but especially do not miss out on The Ransom You can read this one before the others, it is something of a standalone and has only a few small spoilers.
The Ransom is book 4 in the Legacy of the King's Pirates series set in1692 Port Royal, Jamaica. However, it can be read as a stand-alone book. When Juliana Dutton's father becomes seriously ill and her twin brother is continuously out all hours of the night drinking and gambling, she has no choice but to secretly run her father's shipping business in order to survive. In a desperate attempt to keep an unwanted suitor, Captain Nichols, from learning her secret Juliana agrees to a false engagement to the buffoon Lord Munford. But can she trust him?
While trying to assist a friend in need, in a less than respectable part of the city, she encounters the infamous Pirate Earl. Despite her fear of him, she is grateful for his assistance from evil-intended, rough, drunken men in her path. There is something familiar about him she can't place. The Pirate Earl finds Juliana enchanting and against her wishes sets himself up as her personal protector.
There are undercurrents of wicked activities and a lurking enemy that endanger Juliana and the Pirate Earl. I don't want to give anything away to spoil the story. But will say this is a fantastic pirates tale with sea battles, secrets, adventures, wickedness, humor, intrigue, grief, struggles along with healing, romance, forgiveness, faith and love; interwoven with much history of the time period. I never cared for pirate stories until I read MaryLu's fantastically written pirate series. She is an amazing gifted writer.
~I received an e-book copy from the author/publisher (no monetary gain were exchanged), this is my honest review~
Welcome back to the Caribbean! MarLu Tyndall has outdone herself with this signature piece. Returning to The Legacy of the King’s Pirates series, the characters that propelled her on her writing career, she reminds us of her special touch. Port Royal, Jamaica, is a haven for the lost, and Juliana has a heart to try to save them. Unfortunately, her heart to help the poor lands her in a heap of trouble. While she wasn’t surprised at being attacked by pirates, she wasn’t expecting being saved by one! Sparks fly ever time Juliana and the Pirate Earl meet, creating a great clash of personalities. But, there is one other man in Juliana’s life, the adorable, and annoying, Lord Munthrope, and though subtle, sparks are definitely flying between them too. The characters are so lovable! Juliana has such a heart of gold, and a brilliant mind, even while being a little naïve about her nightly excursions. But, if she was more careful, then she wouldn’t need the dashing Pirate Earl to save her, right? And the Pirate Earl himself is charming, and roguish, the perfect blend of piratical arrogance, and noble chivalry. Add to it Lord Munthrope, a really sweet buffoon, who’s adorable in his funny shenanigans. All the characters are so well written, placed in a setting so vivid, it’s easy to imagine yourself there. The message is so wonderful, a great echo of her first work, The Redemption. The story is well written, a great action packed adventure, full of surprising twists and turns. If you’re a fan of pirate adventures, deep romance, a great message (and a fondness for The Scarlet Pimpernel) then this is a highly recommended must read.
The Idea: I looooved the idea. In case you don't know, this book is related to MaryLu's Legacy of the King's of the King's Pirates series. (One of my favorites from her.) Well, this piece is about Merrick and Charlisse's son, Alex, AKA The Pirate Earl AKA Lord Munthrope. I really enjoyed the idea of pirate Alex leading a double life as the most feared pirate in the area and fluffy, nonsensical, colorful Lord Munthrope. I also enjoyed the idea of Juliana Dutton being forced to take over her father's business as he falls ill. And, there were pirates. So I loved it. The Characters: The characters were fantastic! Juliana and Alex had vivid, realistic back stories. I loved Alex as both "Munny" and the Pirate Earl. Even the smaller characters were pretty well developed. I was really invested in this book and didn't want to stop reading. The Plot: It was a great plot! It really kept me reading, and I would love to read it again. This book was a little longer than most in its genre, but I enjoyed it. There were many twists and turns, and while I could predict the outcome of some events, I still loved it. The Setting: Fan. Tastic. I am writing a novel right now involving someone who was injured in the Port Royal earthquake of 1692, so I have been doing a lot of research for this era. MaryLu did not disappoint. Everything was accurate and vividly described. Overall: It was amazing! I loved this book and recommend it to friends. I am a huge fan of MaryLu Tyndall, and this did not disappoint.
MaryLu Tyndall's latest novel begins at The Cat and the Fiddle Tavern in Port Royal, Jamaica, 1692.
Juliana Dutton meets the man of her dreams when she puts herself in harms way to help a sick friend. The hero rescues her but little did she know he is a professional pirate by night, masquerading as a foppish gentleman by day and he has a past that, once she discovers it, will ruin her.
In many ways The Ransom reminded me of The Princess Bride. Mistaken identity, witty dialogue, heart stopping danger at the hand of handsome suitors.
Tyndall's heart for people is evident as she continues to craft characters with real struggles. In this book she touches on abandonment issues, poverty, a heroine who cares for orphans with a best friend stuck in the clutches of a harlot's business, to characters who work to earn God's favor and another who has given up on God entirely. This story is chock full of promise, hope and heartbreak.
Another of my favorite things about M.L. Tyndall novels is the unique historical events she manages to weave into her stories. The ending of this book was so surprising and unique I couldn't believe it was a real historical event.
After three years of publishing the first three books to the series “Legacy of the King’s Pirate” MaryLu Tyndall writes a fourth outstanding swashbuckling novel to this thrilling series, "The Ransom"! Like her other novels, I had a very hard time putting this novel down. This exciting adventure takes place in the year 1692 in the meanest city Port Royal, Jamaica. Secretly, Miss Juliana Dutton is trying to keep her father’s business afloat while her father is extremely ill and her twin brother does nothing to help, but get drunk and gamble away anything. The son of Merrick and Charlisse Hyde, Alexander Hyde, lives his life by leading a double life to hide certain deep secrets from society. Will each choice or action Juliana and Alexander take through life either turn against or backfire on them? Only reading through this God-inspiring novel, see how each character comes to grip in trusting in their own path to what will be best for them or if they trust in the Lord to show them their rightful path!
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6
I was reading along, la-de-da-de-dah, happy with the story, loving the characters, and then the very last line of the book came along and slapped me upside the head. Doggone that MaryLu Tyndall! I love to hate her sometimes. The cliffhanger on this novel is absolutely killing me. I NEED the next book in this series. Pronto.
Whew. Now that we’ve got that rant out of the way (swipes sweat off of brow with the back of her hand). . . THE RANSOM is a satisfying read with all the pirate “arrhs,” several sword fights, and plenty of ocean spray.
Oh yeah, and did I mention the hunky hero? Captain Merrick’s son, Alex, starts out a little rough around the edges, but by the end of the book, shapes up into quite an honorable man. He saves the damsel in distress along with some orphans. What’s not to love about that? I’m looking forward to more of him in the next books.
Author MaryLu does a fantastic job of bringing Port Royal to life in a reader’s mind. If you’re a Pirates of the Caribbean lover, then this is the book for you!
Port Royal, Jamaica in 1692 must have been a fascinating place – certainly not for the faint of heart. Swashbuckling pirates, mortar rounds, sword play and even sword fights grace this wonderful story that is hard to put down. Shipping is one of the main businesses of the day since an island requires almost everything to come by sea. Now, of course, if you are a pirate, raiding the ships is your livelihood. The Pirate Earl appears to have picked up where his reformed parent left off, and has continued with what used to be the ‘family business’. Miss Juliana Dutton is busy with her own family’s business, and unfortunately these two businesses collide. The ensuing story is one that will have you laughing, shedding a tear or two and certainly sitting on the edge of your seat. Don’t miss this last installment of The Legacy of the King’s Pirates, a series worth every moment of your time. Who knows – perhaps this isn’t the end of the story……
The Ransom is book four in the Legacy of the King’s Pirates Series. Set in 1692 Jamica, We have Juliana Dutton who is keeping a secret, she is running her father’s business while he is ill. No one can find out that she is the one running the business. Alexander Hyde “The Pirate Earl” is feared by all but has his eyes set on the beautiful Juliana; he has loved her for many years. Lord Munthrope, the town idiot, is whom Juliana turns to get rid of a nosey suitor.
Will Juliana marry Lord Munthrope? Will the Pirate Earl tell Juliana how he feels about her? Will Juliana keep her father’s business alive? You will need to read the book to find out. The Ransom can be read as a stand-alone and is a wonderful book that you will not put down until your finished.
