so i finished this dumpster fire! let's talk about that!

(obviously, i didn't go into this thinking this book would be good. it was published in 1982, and it was obviously a very niche thing. anyway, away we gooooo!)

let's start off by establishing that every character in this book is terrible. jill, our protagonist, is entitled, selfish, and a brat. toni, her bff, is a literal sociopath. A. LITERAL. SOCIOPATH. and we're supposed to think that jill is boring when toni is TRULY OUT HERE FORCING HER

There was a day when I read books from the "Sweet Dreams Series" in between books about serial killers. This one is about two best friends who have a contest to see who will be the first to kiss ten boys during their summer vacation. This approach to dating seemed trampy to my Catholic self at the time but, on reflection, may have been better than my "marry the first boy you kiss" approach.

I gave this an average 3 but among Sweet Dreams books this is closer to a 4. It's one of the better ones as far as the main character is concerned. Not too annoying/dumb/bitchy.
It could have been titled Ten-job Summer as her and her best friend had nearly that many jobs throughout the book. I do like Janet Quinn-Harkin's sense of humour, I actually had a few laugh-out-loud moments.

This was fun for a quick re-read. I used to get a pound of my Nan for pocket money and get one of these books for 75p. Good times lol.

Jill and her friend Toni, make a pact to have a not- boring summer, then a bet - the first to date ten boys over the summer is the winner.

They fall out when Jill meets a boy she really likes - but Toni won 't call off the bet and leaves Jill facing a choice between her boyfriend and her best friend.

This was like eating a big fluffy marshmallow. I've got a soft spot for Janet Quin-Harkin.
