"Andrea Andersen has that undeniable knack for creating chemistry between her characters. Written by a Woman is an addictively slow burn with an unreal amount of pining—in the best possible way—and I absolutely could not put it down. Signe was too relatable, and Zaid's quiet strength and constant acts of service are everything I want in an MMC." -Allison Speka, author of Trip Switch
He can code for solutions. She can write happy endings.
If only writing smutty romance novels paid the bills, then Signe Lange could quit her monotonous nine-to-five. After one of her stories goes viral, her goals may finally be within reach. Only that dream may be snatched away by her company's unfairly attractive Chief Technology Officer, Zaid Ansara.
For Zaid, catching glimpses of Signe sitting at the front desk is the only bright light in his mind-numbing workday--a fantasy, an indulgence. That is until a livestream event goes horribly wrong and reveals his resemblance to the love interest she created in her novel.
Perhaps Signe isn't as indifferent to him as he thought. Except she is off limits, very off limits. He's her superior, but hopefully not for long.
This could be his chance to get the girl. Dreams may be worth the risk, but can Zaid convince Signe that he's the one for her? Preferably, without revealing that he knows about her story?
When her feelings for the man who inspired her reader's favorite character become bigger than she expected, can Signe move forward with her plans to publish? Or will her chances at her own happily ever after be threatened if she does?
Andrea Andersen is an author living with her little family in Southern California. Using her maladaptive daydreaming to her advantage, she likes to write stories filled with laughter and kisses. When she isn't writing love stories, she can be found rewatching her favorite TV shows or taking too many naps.
I wanted so badly to like this, but it felt like a chore to read. The premise sounded cute and promising, especially because the perfect man is one that’s fictional and written by a woman, but I feel like so much was lacking. In the 380+ pages of this book, the FMC and MMC didn’t interact much, and if felt like their chemistry was never built, but the FMC (who wanted to be an author) had used the MMC as the inspiration for the male lead in her book. Then when the actually MMC found out, he started to create a version of her in his head and envision what a relationship and life would be like. All without having any meaningful interactions, at least until he found out she was writing smut about him. I wouldn’t consider this book a romance because the whole plot was about her not knowing how to tell him about her book, and him not telling her he already knows about it. When they actually start going out, we don’t even get scenes of their dates/outings together, it’s just mentioned in passing. I felt a bit icky any time he would ‘research’ her/how to please a woman/comb through her socials about what she likes/doesn’t like, instead of just befriending her or spending time with her to learn these very basic things on his own. It felt grossly manipulative. (And it would be a different case if I went into this assuming it was a dark romance, which it is not). The pacing of the storyline was also very strange. It seemed like the story spans over the time of several months (we start the storyline during the summer), but we only see about one day a week. “At work on Monday” “the following Monday” “since it’s a Friday”, etc. Then it’s Halloween (which I’m assuming was just an opportunity to add in a ‘masked men fantasy’ scenes), there’s a few more weeks mentioned, a trip to Tennessee where they are talking about the humidity there, but it should be winter, or at least fall at that time, then no other mention of holidays. After the Tennessee trip, there ate still many more weeks where the characters are figuring out what they’re doing. As for the scenes, some filler scenes had their own multiple page chapters, while scenes where the MCs are interacting only get maybe a paragraph or two before changing. In the end, the relationship felt very forced and surface level.
"Written by a Woman" by Andrea Andersen is a wildly fine delight, one of the best workplace romances I have ever read. Funny, important, sexy, and realistic. Andersen takes the time necessary to grow Signe and Zaid's relationship. The banter and tension between the two of them left me yearning for more. As their friendship blossoms over time, so does their mutual fawning and eventual love for one another. Andersen really gets her readers invested in their connection. It's a palpable attraction, one that feels authentic and lived-in. With a lot of workplace romances, the power imbalance makes me want to pull my hair out. Not here! The power dynamics never feel icky or predatory. In fact, Zaid is a respectful king, as respectful as they come. And he's obsessed with Signe... YES! I just loved Signe as a main character. She's so relatable! There is a lot of secondhand embarrassment here from and between both of the characters, but not in a bad way? If that makes any sense. Definitely tons of laugh-out-loud moments! There are a lot of quotes in here that will stick with me for years to come. This is a slow-burning romance, but I appreciated it because of the time it took to cultivate a genuine relationship between the two characters. And the spice definitely hits all of the right notes. All in all, I loved this book, and I cannot wait to read Andrea Andersen's next novel!
Thank you to Andrea Andersen for the complimentary ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.
⭐️Dual POV ⭐️Sweet Romcom ⭐️Spice 🌶🌶 ( I usually read dark romance and super super super smutty books)
. . . . .
I really enjoyed this book! I loved the dual POV. The beginning was a little hard for me to get into, but then it was easier as the book went on. I loved Zaids' family dynamic.
I love that this author talked about the BS of having a tampon machine in a workplace and normalized getting your period. I related to that so much! But I didn't get an apology plant from my male coworkers.... that was super sweet of Zaid to give the women apology plants for having that machine in the women's bathroom.
I was kinda hoping for a scene with the scream mask.... but that's the dark romance girlie coming out of me 😈
I also was hoping for more details on these grey sweatpants.....🍆 😅 maybe the scream mask WITH grey sweatpants.... a girl can dream, right???
But all in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read it in 1 day. I love all of this authors books, and I can't wait to see what else she writes.
I just need everyone to join the Andrea Andersen fan club. Her stories are so cozy but filled with spice and plot.
Signe Lane wants to be a writer, currently an office manager to pay the bills, and it’s there she develops a crush on one of the higher ups in the company, Zaid Ansara. She does what any normal girl would do — uses him as inspiration for her male main character — and it blows up. Zaid finds out about this and realizes his feelings towards Signe might not be one sided after all, but trying to maneuver corporate HR and this revelation might be more difficult than expected.
I ate this story up! I loved the characters, loved the slow burn, loved the easter eggs. I can’t wait to see what Andrea writes next.
I can’t believe it took me this long to finish this book
One of the worst books There was a whole chapter of her getting her period and then screaming at everyone in the office for not having pads available (is this your first month being a woman or something?) And then screaming at the guy if he wipes his ass with free toilet paper and this whole feminist rant. It was disgusting and very crude. I don’t know what he saw in her lol Anyways nothing happens at all in this book until like way later and even by chapter 15 and they barely interacted I wanted to pull my hair out it was so boring The over use of politically correct terms was overdone it seemed like she was overcompensating - embarrassing holy hell - author please retire 4 books is enough for you
This book I found off Tik tok from the author telling a part of the book as a storytime and that got me interested! This book had me giggling and kicking my feet, such a cutesy romance! Got me out of a reading slump!
I really enjoyed this book! It’s quite possibly one of my favorites so far this year! The banter and tension between Zaid and Signe was perfect and I laughed more than once. I would definitely recommend this book and look forward to reading more from this author.
Listen, the writing wasn't that great and it was full of romance cliches. But man they way I giggled and kicked my feet. A true testament to that thing online that romance books are just women that want to be treated kindly
I loved this book. Like, full-on hugged-it-when-I-finished loved it. It’s a slow burn, but the kind that keeps you hooked the whole way through. There is some spice sprinkled in (via the FMC's book) and it was just a clever way to add tension and heat without rushing anything.
Yeah, it’s a little outlandish and silly at times, but that just made it more fun. Signe and Zaid had great banter, real chemistry, and felt like actual people you could root for. Zaid is the respectful, quietly pining type (we love to see it), and Signe’s awkward writer energy was super relatable. I laughed, I blushed, I cringed just the right amount and I’m honestly praying this gets turned into an audiobook with duet narration so I can relive it all over again.
This was such a fun and STEAMY workplace romance with a very unique plot that had me hooked! It felt a little “insta love” but I really enjoyed this and can’t wait to read more from this author!
I am clearly a baby because WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS WAS JUST MILDLY SPICY?! 😂
This was my very first romance novel ever, and phew I cannot imagine what real spice is for some of you. lol
Nevertheless, this was a delightful read, and I loved the slow burn, office romance. As soon as I found the author's thread post about this, I could not resist reading it.
Picking up a book after reading a scene/dialogue on a reel is always tricky! You don't know if it would be a hit or a miss! But that's where all the fun is! So yupp the shy & calm guy and extrovert girl trope got me through this book. Plus that one participant scene from a reel! 🤭 So I don't know, somewhere in between the both maybe🤷🏼♀️ (leaning more towards a miss! )
The thing is I was initially somewhat enjoying this book, but as I was reading I was getting a bit of an icky feeling and couldn't place why. I then read some reviews and I saw one that said the relationship was manipulative, and that's when it clicked, because that was my exact problem with this one. I cant really talk about it without spoilers though.
And this is a less problematic one comparatively, but both their perspectives sounded the same i had to constantly recheck whose head i was in.
Overall wasn't a big fan but I have read worse so 🤷♀️ the next book is way better though I'd recommend jaqline and Leo's story instead!

How I Rate- 1 star- Hardly liked anything/ was disappointed 2 star- Had potential but did not deliver/ was disappointed 3 stars- Was ok but could have been better/ was average / Enjoyed a lot but something was missing 4 stars- Loved a lot but something was missing 5 stars- Loved it/ new favourite
Read this because of a social media post so I guess that worked? I felt like the main conflict was a bit drawn out and it took these two a while to really get in each other’s orbit. But it was fun. Nothing special, a quick read.
I felt awkward for the first third of the book because goddamn was she basically sexually harassing this man. How are you still incapable of doing anything but obsessing about how hot he is in detail, even a year into working with him? Oh, right, because you are writing and publishing a fucking fanfic about you two, under your actual fucking name. And livestreaming him without his consent. And trying to buy his cologne.
Although, we're fortunate he's just as crazy as she is. Reading into tiny moments that amount to nothing. Going to her hotel room at 10pm and kissing her when he thinks she's having a panic attack. Barely knowing a thing about her and just waiting around for things to work themselves out.
There's also this weird element with Zaid where he's mostly hot because we're told so. He's not super cohesive as a character, but if Zayne is him and people love Zayne, there's some transferral going on, but it's not sold enough for me to believe it, at least not until the end.
Otherwise, the writing here was a little verbose, too specific with the contemporary references (Matty Healy, really? Mary, my gaylor heart thought better of you), and not always very well directed. It hurts a little extra when books about amazing authors (who enraptured thousands of followers with a little fanfic) are, ah, not written by amazing authors.
I don’t normally read contemporary romance. But this had a shy software developer that falls first for the MMC, and a confident FMC that’s working on her first romance novel and secretly bases it on said MMC. I couldn’t resist! It was slow burn too and absolutely worth the wait. I loved everything about this, even when it wasn’t always realistic. Actually, I think that made me love it even more. I read to escape reality, and contemporary romance doesn’t always do that for me. But this one did. Definitely adding this author to my list and reading more of her work!
Ebook. KU. I really enjoyed this for the most part, but there was something about the story that felt off somehow. It felt like a lot of things were described or set up for later that then didn’t go anywhere. It is a slow burn with a small amount of open door spice.
I found this book to have the perfect mix for me of romance, comedy, spicy scenes and actual plot development. The characters were well defined and I loved some of the mature conversations happening between the two of them: Zaid and Signe (pronounced See-nyuh, it's great to see a main character with a hard to pronounce name, a pronunciation guide at the beginning and to see how she stands up for having her name said right!).
Signe is working for a software company but in a very much non-software job, a receptionist. It's a position she sees herself only temporarily in, with the hope that her smut novel will eventually take off, after slowly releasing it online to a free platform. Zaid is her superior (but not her direct boss!) and he's the subject of Signe's wandering eyes, especially when he's walking away from her, as well as the subject of her book. The story alternates between his point of view and hers, which I thought worked really well showing their personalities (both golden retrievers!) and explain some of the hesitation and misunderstanding that the other character might be feeling.
Signe is certain that Zaid doesn't know about her smutty book and he definitely shouldn't be finding out that he's the main inspiration for the romantic interest. How would he ever find out? Except he does.
Zaid realises quickly that despite his similar appearance with the protagonist in Signe's novel, his personality is very different than what she seems to prefer. So does she really like him for who he is?
The whole plot was so funny and silly in a good way, with supporting characters which worked well (and some are getting their own books!) and a wide variety of conflicts explored: relationships in the workplace, different cultural backgrounds, family involvement and mature discussions like wanting kids. It even gets bonus points from me for mentioning the tv show Bluey.
Overall 5/5 stars, I'd definitely recommend it to people interested in romantic comedies with some spicy scenes and a good plot. I'm looking forward to reading the next one!
Y'all, the hypocrisy in this book is absolutely insane. I was really excited to read this book because of a bookstagram reel I saw highlighting the feminism in this book, but what I got was quite the opposite. The FMC does things that, if done by a man, would be considered harassment. She is constantly lusting after him (particularly his ass) by staring at him, trying to initiate contact with him although he makes it perfectly clear he is not interested (avoids/breaks eye contact, doesn't have conversations with her, etc) and she even puts his likeness in a book where she then writes smut with him as the main character. She doesn't even try to change the character description?? This would all make me highly uncomfortable and would not be ok if the genders were reversed. I'm highly disappointed in this book, especially since it's giving "well if men do it, then why can't women?" when talking about HARASSMENT. This is not ok at all.
The first chapter was rough, with some clunky prose and odd descriptions (tall stocky) that took me right out of the flow and almost made me abandon the book. I pushed through and was rewarded with a fun, flirty story about a budding author who goes viral over a character she based on her work crush. There were still some awkward parts, but the charming characters and their sexual tension helped me breeze right past those bits.
This was such a fun read. The yearning and tension between our two main characters was sooo good! I appreciate the arc that we got also with Signe and Jacqueline, something so simple as her just opening up about what music she liked. There were moments I got the ick... mainly from the MFC, and that was in the beginning for the most part. Once I got to page 100, did the story really pick up, and I had trouble putting it down. Zaiddy is such a baddy
Who am I if not just a girl that likes reading romcoms, no matter if they're good or bad? Great time. Short read. Shy guy. PINING. What more could I ask?
Most enjoyable aspect of the book? Him saying cute shit to her in his native language. Man had me on google looking up wtf he was saying. But omg it was so cute 😭. Anyways As always, whenever I decide I'm gonna make time to read, I start with a romcom. This served it's purpose.
Another i-dont-know-what-to-rate-it 3 stars review I guess.
