The fascinating content is defeated by the style. Mailer’s Miami and the Siege of Chicago occasionally had tortured syntax and forced vulgarity but his outsize personality rescued it. Flaherty has neither Mailer’s personality nor Hunter S Thompson’s effervescent outrageousness, so political insights endlessly battle with tedious vulgarity in tortured prose.
